ER nurses are unsung heroes

No one wants to see the inside of an emergen-cy room or medical cen-ter, but few people avoid occasional visits to the ER. When such situations arise, a top-notch trauma team can make all the difference.

One of the first people patients encounter inside an ER are the nurses who quickly assess life-threat-ening problems and be-gin to solve them on the spot. Although nurses can work in hospital emer-gency rooms, emergency nurses also may work in ambulances, urgent care centers, sports arenas, and other high-stress situations. ER nurses are registered nurses who work closely with doctors

to help diagnose, stabi-lize and manage con-ditions. They also liaise between family members and other medical staff and educate patients about their conditions once an emergency situa-tion is addressed.

Because ER nurses spe-cialize in treating severely ill or injured patients or those in life-threatening situations, those consid-ering a career in this field must be ready to adapt to many different situations. In a single day, ER nurses may encounter children with broken bones, pa-tients with acute stom-ach pains and people injured in motor vehicle accidents, among many other potential situations. Patients of all ages come through trauma centers, and prioritizing emergen-cies can be part of the job description.

An ER nurse’s day is frequently stressful and fast-paced. Some of the tasks to be expected, according to the nursing career resource Nurse Frontier, include:

• First aid• Suturing• Intubation• Bag valve mask ven-

tilation• Administering med-

icine• Basic life support• Advance cardiac life

support

• Transfusing bloodProspective ER nurses

must complete a nurs-ing degree or diploma program. In Canada, since the late 1990s, the provinces and territories have moved from diplo-ma entry level to bacca-laureate entry level for RNs, says the Canadian Nurses Association. Both the United States and Canada require prospec-tive ER nurses to pass the NCLEX-RN exam, which is administered by the National Council of State Boards. RNs receive state licensing in the United States. In Canada there is no national license; each province or territory li-censes individually based on jurisdiction.

According to Johnson & Johnson’s Discover Nursing, ER nurses are in-creasingly learning about tech, thanks to electron-ic medical records and point-of-care barcoding.

ER nurses have more responsibility than ever because of nursing short-ages. That means there are plenty of opportuni-ties to become leaders in the field.

ER nurses and other nurses fill a much-needed responsibility in the med-ical field. A career as an ER nurse can be challeng-ing but very rewarding.

Nurses make a difference in the lives of their patients and coworkers every day! Each year America honors their hard work and dedication with a national week-long celebration. From May 6 through May 12, medical organizations recognize the tradition of a profession that saves our lives and touches our hearts.

To our nurses at Kern Valley Hospital, your work is not easy. You must have compassion and endurance to be there in the middle of the night, when your patient is struggling with pain. You must have patience and courage to fight that bureaucratic red tape that’s delaying your patient’s medications from the hospital pharmacy. You must have the composure, medical knowledge, and technical skill to insert that central line into the distressed ER patient who needs medication. You must have an endless supply of “knock knock” jokes to comfort that frightened child. Registered nurses are advocates above all else, whether as a patient advocate at the bedside or as a social advocate promoting an equitable healthcare sys-tem for all.

The Nursing Profession is truly a work of “heart,” and the simple truth is that every day the nurses at Kern Valley Hospital show how much they really care. As proof of this our nurses regularly receive nice cards, sentiments and heartfelt ‘thank yous’ from the community. We wish to thank the Kern Valley community for continuing to show your deep appreciation for our nursing staff. And, to the nursing staff, please remember you are always appreciated, loved and respected.

Happy Nurses Week on behalf of the administrators and leadership of the Kern Valley Healthcare District.
