    TYFS Annual Report 2013-14 3

Tahoe Youth & Family Services has had another successful year. I hope you find this annual report to be informative and inspirational. Please review the statistics and photos to get a glimpse of the impact we make on the individuals and communities we serve. Our board stayed busy with:

Strategic planning to remain focused on our four core areas: Mentoring, Outreach, Counseling and Supportive services

Financial oversight Supporting our staff when Executive Director, Alissa Nourse, moved on to a new opportunity Beginning the recruitment process for a new Executive Director

We could not do our work without the commitment of our dedicated staff, volunteers and donors. We wish to publically thank Ms. Nourse who served as Executive Director for many years. Debra Higginson, Financial Comptroller, and Cheyanne Lane, Supportive Services Coordinator filled in to run the agency while we began the search for a new ED. The staff accepted and succeeded with added responsibilities during the transition. Grants provide a large portion of our financial picture, but we could not operate without the generous support of our donors. In-kind donations and volunteer hours totaled nearly $250,000, cash donations provided more than $97,000 and fund raising efforts contributed more than $6,000. We thank those of you who have been our supporters. To those of you who are not involved, we ask that you consider volunteering, and/or financially contributing to our agency. Visit our website tahoeyouth.org to get more information about volunteer opportunities and to make a donation. We look forward to serving South Lake Tahoe, Alpine County, Douglas County and Incline Village for years to come.

For this 2013-2014 Annual Report, I would like to highlight the importance of legacy. As a new member of the TYFS family, the rich legacy of this organization is very apparent. Forty plus years of quality service shows the strong legacy this agency has developed. I remember when I first discovered the organization, in my mind was a voice saying,, "I need to be a part of this.” I wanted to be part of a legacy of service to at-risk youth. In the fiscal year 2013-2014 our Drop-In Centers had over 4,000 visits with youth accessing services including: - over 1,400 items of food - nearly 250 backpacks - over 150 pairs of socks - 340 hygiene items - 19 sleeping bags - 3 tents - over 220 items of clothing Staff also assisted our clients with internet access along with assistance in obtaining proper identification for obtaining employment and funding for college. Our guests also had access to showers and laundry. One of them shared just how vital these services are: " I was struggling to find a job, and decent services, and TYFS helped me out extremely. They directed me to decent services and gave me guidance. If it weren't for them, I would be homeless or in jail."- T.T. I wanted to be part of a legacy involving passionate exemplary adults who take time to be a part of a child’s life. Spanning from Alpine County to Douglas County, our Mentoring Programs paired over 50 responsible adults with children in need of a positive adult role models. Based on the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets Framework, these relationships serve as protective factors for youth as they are more likely to avoid behaviors such as substance use, delinquency, and dropping out of school. Our mentors volunteer their precious time building relationships with youth, empowering them with resiliency by instilling healthy coping skills. These bonds help our youth become productive members in the community. I wanted to be a part of a legacy offering quality counseling services both for mental health and substance abuse for individuals and families. Nearly 450 individuals accessed our certified program providing prevention, intervention, and treatment services for substance abuse and mental health counseling for youth and families. Services also include: Crisis counseling • Solution Focus Therapy • Brief Intervention Therapy • Family Reunification • 24 hour crisis line These services change lives, as exemplified by one of our clients: "I've grown over the last four months with Tahoe Youth and Family Services' help- not only with recovery but also within myself." - TYFS Client The legacy of these services could not be established without the passion and dedication of the Staff and the Board of Directors at TYFS. The community is fortunate to have an incredibly skilled group of people who choose to use their strengths to help others. This is the legacy of TYFS throughout the past 40 years. It is a privilege to now be a part of this organization and grow our legacy of serving.

“The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy”-Unknown

    Mentoring ...it’s many Faces

Tahoe Youth and Family Services provides mentoring on many levels. Mentoring is a part of South Lake Tahoe with our Girls Project Teen Mentors and Girls In Real-Life Situation (G.I.R.L.S.) group facilitators in Alpine County. Even amongst our own TYFS staff where we continually provide role modeling and supervision to peer advocates and practicing interns, as well as professional development opportunities. We have formal mentoring programs as well that serve youth ages 4-17 in Gardnerville, Alpine County, and South Lake Tahoe. Our adult mentors provide a minimum of four hours per month to a child that is considered “at risk” of drug and alcohol abuse, dropping out of school or engaging in other at -risk behaviors. Statistics have shown that providing a youth with the consistent presence of a positive adult role model who does not judge or condemn gives these children a sense of trust in relationships and a confidence in themselves that they may not have experienced in the past.

“A Mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope Inside yourself” - Oprah Winfrey

“All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them.” - Magic Johnson

    South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition

South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (STDFC) was established in 2013 to address the high levels of youth substance use in South Lake Tahoe. Main drugs of focus are alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. Our coalition consists of 12 community sectors; Youth, parents, school, law enforcement, faith based organizations, health care professionals, media, civic and volunteer groups, state/local/tribal agencies, youth serving organizations, and businesses.

South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition Our mission is to mobilize the community to provide strategies to prevent and reduce youth

    substance use.

Youth Groups and School Based Programs

The Brief Intervention Program (BIP) has been implemented in the middle school, high school, and the local alternative school. This program gives students a chance to redeem themselves. It has been proven through a recent study that students who attend at home suspension are more likely to engage in alcohol and drug use. The BIP program gets students on campus and away from temptation as well as offer them a drug and alcohol education and a positive adult role model. The DFC is currently in the works on creating a next step and after care program to follow up on students and prevent further suspensions and use.

The STDFC Youth Advisory Council plays an active role in the community. They have been working on many projects including participating in Casey’s Pledge.

Community Events and Awareness The National Drug Take Back Day on April 26, 2014 was a success, with the collection of over 57 pounds of medication. Permanent Drug Take Back bin inside of the South Tahoe Police Department has been a success and the STDFC is in the works on implementing more permanent bins inside local pharmacies so it is even more convenient to dispose of unwanted/unused medications. The STDFC is a supporter and participant in the Drug Store Project.
