Sam Devlin’s EiderThe "Vanessa" is a sailing vessel based on Sam Devlin’s design, Eider. “Vanessa”is an 18’ LOD and 21’ LOA Gaff Rig Sloop. She has a retractable center board and 630 pounds of removable lead ballast.

Equipped with a small galley, sitting headroom couch and a comfortable bunk, she easily accommodates

two. She also has a full electrical panel for cabin lights, bilge pump, GPS/depth sounder, and three 12v outlets. The Eider design

incorporates a large main sail and a jib that together make up 170 square feet of total sail area.  “Vanessa” comes with a full dodger and sail covers as well as 4-stroke long shaft pro outboard motor and single-axle trailer with collapsible tongue.

On board, you will find her fully fitted with fire extinguisher, life jackets, first aid kit, cushions, galley butane stove, 12v gel battery and much more. She has sailed the San Juan Islands and can easily do the Inside Passage to Alaska!! She’s set up to cruise with a

couple and a dog but can easily sleep 2 on the back cockpit, one on each bench. She is set up to be sailed single-handedly.

Construction and DesignVanessa is named after Michael’s daughter-in-law and is built with high quality British Standard 1088 Marine Plywood. All her dimensional lumber is from reclaimed logs floating down the Columbia River and milled a mile from Michael’s boat building shop “Welcome Slough Boatworks.” Most

of this reclaimed lumber is old growth fir and cedar. The hull and decks are skinned with two layers of 6-ounce fiberglass. Her cockpit is self-bailing so when she is moored there is no need of a bilge pump. Built completely by Michael on Puget Island over the course of 9 ½ weeks, you can follow every stage of herconstruction at:

The Coffee TrustYou might be asking, "Why would Michael have a vessel such as "Vanessa" as a fundraiser?” Well, Michael has built 18 vessels over the last 5 years – half of which he has given away. Longbottom Coffee has supported coffee farming families for over 25 years! We have done this through the non-profit, “Coffee Kids,” founded by Bill Fishbein and now through The Coffee Trust.
