anxieties and face the odds.

• Discuss key leadership principles of diversity, creativity, conflict resolution, change management,

and effective communication in an innovative manner from the perspective of each character in

THE WIZARD OF OZ

• Based on the 1900 children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

• Movie was produced by MGM in 1939 and has become an icon for American pop culture

• Little unknown fact, the first release in 1939 was not financially successful for MGM and it

wasn’t until the re-release in 1949 where the film saw profit

• The Wizard of Oz is one of the most seen films in movie history!

ME VS. US

• Everyone wanted to go to Oz for a different reason

• Despite their WHY their journey created a powerful team

• Effective leaders must understand the personal needs and motivation of individual team, so

that these individual purposes can be aligned with higher purpose of the organization.

• The journey was safer and more productive with them traveling together

• Build a STRONG team with an aligned WIIFM and the rest will fall into place.

LEARN TO DEAL WITH IT

• Just when the Yellow Brick Road couldn’t get any worse, here come the flying monkeys.

• “Companies that sustain success face brutal reality head on, while at the same time never lose

faith in their ability to prevail” (Jim Collins in his book, Good to Great).

• The 4 characters faced every obstacle they encountered head-on and emerged even stronger.

• What obstacles are you facing that you need to address head-on?

NO ONE ELSE CAN DO IT FOR YOU

• At the end, “Glenda the Good Witch” tells Dorothy that she has had the ability to go home

the entire time, and Dorothy asks a very important question, “why didn’t you tell me?”

• There are some things that you must experience for yourself

• Leadership is a development process

• Help along the way is essential, but no one else can develop for you

• “Trust the process and allow yourself to experience all of the emotions that come with it”

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD…

• The Yellow Brick Road of Child Welfare isn’t always a straight and easy path and there will even

be some flying monkeys and trees that throw things at you, but NEVER lose your FOCUS and

GOAL.

• When you encounter people along this journey, it will be easy to find the bad and the things

that make them the worst person for the team, but take a second look and see beyond the

surface.

• Appreciate the “munchkins” and the “Good Witches” that come along to inspire and motivate

you—and yes—appreciate “The Wiz” too!

• “A person is a person, no matter how small” –Dr. Seuss

• Everything you need is inside of YOU!!
