King of Prussia Charitable Foundation Donations $1000 to Crush Childhood Cancer - Crush Childhood Cancer’s mission is to financially and emotionally

support families who have children with cancer. What started as a junior class project by founder Samantha Paradis has grown into an on-going effort to provide these families with as much support as possible as they battle cancer on a daily basis. From its humble beginnings, Crush has grown each year both in terms of families helped and money raised. In addition to the financial support, a community of families has been developed, each helping the other navigate the journey their families are facing. The non profit organization is a 100% volunteer-run and all proceeds from the events go directly to our families. When a diagnosis of cancer strikes a family, the financial impact can be equivalent to a 25% pay reduction. The emotional toll is incalculable. Wondering how to pay bills on top of the other stresses associated with cancer seems to us more than unfair. Crush supports families who have children in all stages of treatment or have lost a child during their Crush sponsorship. Crush Childhood Cancer believes no one should have to fight alone and counts it a privilege to stand with these families.

$1000 Main Line Animal Rescue - At Main Line Animal Rescue, everything they do is with an intense focus

on eliminating the systemic issues that lead to animal abuse and pet homelessness. When seeing the heartbreaking effects of a flawed system, nothing motivates like the desire for change. This is what sets Main Line Animal Rescue apart from other shelters and rescues. They are advocates and warriors — fierce opponents of the mass breeding of dogs, and forever fighting for the welfare and future of our nation’s neglected animals. Our mission is to be the country’s leading and most innovative animal rescue organization.

Thanks to more than 600 active and engaged volunteers, an onsite veterinary clinic and innovative training and educational programs, they are able to help thousands of animals every year. It costs approximately $29 per day to feed all the animals in their care at the rescue. Our Foundation’s contribution of $1000 will help feed every single animal at the rescue for over 1 month. 1000 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand - Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is a

national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to raising funds for research into new treatments and cures for all children battling cancer. The Valley Forge Towers Community Association will be hosting their 9th Annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 11am to 3pm. This local fundraiser at the Valley Forge Towers has raised $65,685 to date for this cause. Our foundation is proud to support their efforts this year for such a worthy cause. Please join them at this event where they will be selling lemonade and other items to help reach their $10,000 goal for 2018. If you wish to help support their fundraising efforts, donations can be made online:

Our Donations Hard At Work We always tell you WHAT our fundraisers like the Taste of the Suburbs and the Annual Golf Outing support... but here is our opportunity to SHOW you what our fundraisers support!

On May 1, 2017, Rotarians from the King of Prussia Rotary Club visited the Upper Merion Township Library for a ribbon cutting event. Our Rotary Club Foundation donated $2,700 to purchase a new AWE Early Learning Station for Upper Merion Township Library Children’s Department. The AWE Early Learning Stations are designed with touch technology, color coded keyboards, a small mouse (for small hands) and over 4,000 developmentally appropriate learning activities for ages 2-8. The Library was able to purchase an AWE Early Learning Station that is bilingual in Spanish and English furthering our outreach to

families that may not be current library users. There are a number of families, in the township, that speak Spanish at home and providing them with access to technology in the language they are most comfortable in, are vital to school readiness. This also provides English speaking students who are interested in learning Spanish another way to practice language skills. These interactive computers are geared toward young children, with the understanding that technology is most effectively used with young children when a parent/guardian is participating with the

technology and the child together to enhance learning. The library believes that access to technology in the public library is important for those families that do not have access at home. If a child does not have access to technology at home, they risk falling behind their peers in school as they not only have to learn grade-level curriculum, but also must learn how to use the tools provided to them.

Recently, The Board voted to apply for a 2018 -2019 District Grant to match half the funds needed to purchase a second AWE Early Learning Station to help support the Library and continue our focus on literacy and education in Upper Merion Township. We are extremely happy that we could make a difference in our community by partnering with the Township Library on such am important tool to help shape young minds!

Teachers of the Year

In the 2017 – 2018 Rotary Year, the King of Prussia Club was proud to start a new tradition and recognition in our community. For years we have been honoring a Police Officer of the Year and a Firefighter of the Year in the Township. We recently decided to honor another group of heroes in Upper Merion Township by starting the Teacher of the Year Award. The committee will approach the Administration of UMASD to have them solicit for potential recipients of the award in which one teacher will be selected from the High School and one from the Middle School. The awards this year were presented at the faculty in service at each of the schools and the recipients will be invited to attend our club meeting at later and more convenient date.

High School Teacher of the Year

On April 10, the King of Prussia Rotary Club was proud to present

Laura Ebersole with the first High School Teacher of the Year. In

addition to being an outstanding English teacher Laura started the

UM Min-THON in 2013. Similar to Penn State¹s THON, this event is

a 6-hour dance marathon where high school students pledge to be

on their feet to support Four Diamonds and pediatric cancer

research. Over the past 6 years, UMAHS has raised $81,298 to aid

Four Diamond families, and this year they hope to raise another

$20,000. She has done an unbelievable amount of work to get this

program up and running and has made it an Upper Merion annual

tradition that is one of the highlights of the year. Laura also goes out

of her way to help her fellow teachers. She was recently named a

PA Keystone Technology Innovator and has volunteered her time

after school to run technology-related workshops for teachers and

has helped numerous teachers on an individual basis.

Middle School Teacher of the Year On May 2nd, the King of Prussia Rotary Club was proud to present its first Middle School Teacher of the Year award to James Crowley. James has been a teacher with Upper Merion for the past 6 years where he currently teaches 8th Grade Social Studies. He is also the 8th Grade Baseball Coach and the 7th Grade Basketball Coach. Thank you to James for your commitment to shaping the minds of our future. You truly exemplify Rotary's moto of Service Above Self We are grateful for the idea and opportunity to recognize other People of Action in our community. Special thanks to George Nikolaou for handling the criteria and presenting the awards.

Ways to Support our Charitable Efforts Our efforts continue to help raise money for the three foundations we support and benefit from for our charitable ways. Still time for you to make a contribution to:

The King of Prussia Rotary Foundation – Our Club’s Foundation which make our donations to local national and international groups and projects possible.

The Gundaker Foundation – Our District’s Foundation – which helps us match donations for projects or groups (Such as matching donations for 2 additional students (4 total from Upper Merion High School) or matching donations for the purchase of trees at the Paul Harris Memorial Grove in VFNHP)

The Rotary Foundation – Rotary International’s Foundation which allows for all kinds of opportunities on many levels. This is how we are able to do global projects in India, Mexico and Argentina and match donations for local projects for the Middle School and the Township Library. You also can choose several different funds for your donation to go too, including End Polio Now.

The form for this year’s contribution is now available online at our website through this link: Foundation Giving Form

Please consider giving to 1, 2, or all 3. In the case of the Rotary Foundation they can take online reoccurring credit card donations that can be set up quarterly or monthly. Contact Jeff Guzy to get set up with Rotary Direct today!

Rotary Fellowships

June is Rotary Fellowship Month. When we become Rotarians, we hear acronyms and terms being discussed at meetings and Rotary events and seldom are explained. At King of Prussia, we do pride ourselves on our fellowship – Getting together for comradery, fun and company. Rotary International prides itself on Rotary Fellowships. These fellowships consist of members who share a common interest in recreational activities, sports, hobbies or professions. These groups help expand skills, foster vocation development and enhance the Rotary experience by exploring interests while developing connections and friendships around the world. These Fellowships function independently of Rotary International by establishing their own rules, dues and administrative structures. Additionally, they are open to Rotarians, their families as well as participants and alumni of Rotary and Foundation programs. These Fellowships also maintain their uniqueness with pins, gifts, shirts, hats and more! You can explore over 80 different fellowships in Rotary by clicking on the picture or by visiting Rotary Fellowships or learn how to start up a new Fellowship of your own!
