Last year, we launched our new Goosfest website, and this year, we’re moving to online booking only (see page 21 for how to book). Please note that there will no longer be a ‘physical’ Box Office via Roger Rushton’s house, 23 Brooklands Drive.

But don’t worry if you don’t have a computer or can’t access the Internet. There will be a 24-hour Goosfest Box Office telephone number where you will be able to leave your contact details and requirements. Goosfest will ring you back to personally assist you with your purchases.

Goosfest is a not-for-profit operation and we aim to keep our quality high and our ticket prices low. This is only possible if our local community continues to support Goosfest by attending events. We also thank our sponsors and Goostrey Parish Council.

If you’re new to Goosfest, come along and see what you’ve been missing! Make the most of a fantastic opportunity for entertainment and socialising on your doorstep. And to our regular Goosfesters, here’s to Goosfest 2019 and a great festival!

www.goosfest.com

This is our 13th Goosfest – and as always, we’ve put together a huge range of music, entertainment, arts and community events. There’s something for everybody, including two events designed for children, so please browse this programme and get booking as quickly as possible!

Some highlights for 2019: globally-renowned singer Barbara Dickson with Scottish singer Rab Noakes; a presentation by Welsh naturalist and television wildlife presenter Iolo Williams; an Elvis tribute act by one of Europe’s top Elvis impersonators and The Budapest Café Orchestra. There’s the ever-popular Goosfest Buzz Comedy Night, plus storytelling, drama and lectures, and music ranging from guitar solos and classical, to jazz, country and Northern Soul.

Community events include an Art Exhibition, Goostrey Archives, Artisan Market, children’s show plus a children’s print-making workshop during our Art Exhibition, and other workshops covering flower arranging, photography, Roberts’ Bakery masterclasses, and gin-tasting.

There will be two opportunities to enjoy lunch at The Swettenham Arms accompanied by local singers with the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein; entertainment with meals at The Crown and The Yellow Broom, plus Irish food when ‘Goostrey Goes to Ireland.’

Welcome to Goosfest ’19

Friday 4th October Jazz evening: John Etheridge and Vimala Rowe Goostrey Village Hall: 8pm (Licensed bar opens 7pm) Tickets £15

Our opening Goosfest concert is designed to put you in a mellow mood for the weekend – a wonderful way to unwind on a Friday evening.

John Etheridge and Vimala Rowe bring their unique blend of jazz music to Cheshire for the first time, so this is a fantastic opportunity to hear something special.

John is a virtuosic fusion guitarist - one of a handful of players who can claim to have helped shape the character of modern jazz guitar. He has been described by fellow fretsman Pat Metheny as ‘one of the best guitarists in the world’, due largely to his tireless exploration of the possibilities of his instrument. A hugely respected artist in his own right, Etheridge also claims an impressive collaborative history, from his role with ground-breaking fusion group Soft Machine to his longstanding status as the guitarist of choice for jazz icon Stéphane Grappelli.

In vocalist Vimala Rowe, he has not only found a partner of rare ability but a talent that perfectly complements his explorative nature. An exemplary jazz singer with a faultless and deft expression, Vimala has a unique style that is further enhanced by her past training in classical Hindustani vocals. Her soulful, moving, and unerringly committed performances on the album produced with John, ‘Out Of The Sky’, are truly memorable. Vimala took the role of Billie Holiday in Alex Webb’s

music-theatre show Cafe Society Swing, but though flawless tributes to the great jazz vocalists are her speciality, she is also an award-winning original composer, and this evening’s concert will showcase well-known songs with some beautiful newer examples.

Also on Saturday 5th OctoberIolo Williams – ‘A Career in Conservation’ Terra Nova School: 8pm Theatre opens 7.30pm Tickets £18 (Allocated seating) (Licensed bar from 7pm)

Welsh naturalist and television presenter Iolo Williams will be giving a fascinating account of his career in conservation, from tales of his childhood to his working career. From red kites to mountain gorillas and hen harriers to grizzly bears, Iolo has been fortunate enough to work with them all, as well as encountering egg-collectors, pigeon fanciers and the SAS (Special Air Service) along the way. He has been a popular and familiar face on television screens for nearly 20 years, presenting wildlife and open-air programmes in English and Welsh on BBC and S4C. Many people will know him from his regular contributions to the BBC’s ‘Springwatch.’

Iolo Williams was born in Builth Wells, moving when he was 5 years old to the small village of Llanwddyn in north Powys. From an early age, he wandered the moors, woods and rivers around his home in search of wildlife. Following a degree in Ecology he returned to mid-Wales to work on a hill farm and then in forestry before starting work for the RSPB. Iolo spent 15 years with the RSPB as a “Species Officer” for Wales monitoring rare birds such as red kites, black grouse and chough, advising key landowners such as the Forestry Commission and National Trust, and investigating crimes against wild birds.

“Over and Nether. Time at one end, wind at the other”

This is a performance piece created to celebrate the publication of Goostrey-based Alan Garner’s memoir of his wartime childhood in Alderley Edge: ‘Where Shall We Run To?’ The show is a collaboration between storyteller Nick Hennessey and musician and composer John Dipper, with script-development support from Alan’s daughter Elizabeth, novelist and editor. There will be an after-show Q&A session on the research and the creative process.

Exploring the power of place, and the author’s ‘one square mile of Cheshire,’ the piece combines oral recordings of Alan Garner with folk tales, folk music, and oral archive as the source material. These are interwoven with original compositions by John, played on the 14-string Viola d’Amore, inspired by Alan Garner’s work and by the landscape of Alderley Edge itself.

Alan Garner: Oral Recordings. Alan is a multi-award-winning novelist, whose debut fantasy novel ‘The Weirdstone of Brisingamen’ took its inspiration from The Legend of Alderley. He has written 13 books, for children and adults, deeply rooted in British folklore and a sense of place.

Nick Hennessey: Storyteller. Nick grew up in Alderley Edge. He is an internationally acclaimed storyteller and folk singer who is particularly interested in the relationship between landscape, communities, their stories and the reinvention of tradition. Nick Hennessey

Following last year’s Country Night, and by popular demand, we have engaged another up-and-coming artiste, Katie O’Malley, who will perform in the atmospheric surroundings of The Barn Upstairs, at The Orchards Farm.

With a unique voice that pours with emotion, Katie O’Malley and her hip-swaying Americana band have played across the UK at numerous festivals.

She has recently featured on BBC ‘Introducing Manchester’, supported top 10 album-selling Beth Rowley and country star Kimmie Rhodes, and played alongside Aziz Ibrahim (Stone Roses, Simply Red). A familiar face on the Manchester music scene, her music is an intriguing cocktail with a husky yet powerful vocal sprinkled on top. Katie and the band have recently released an Extended Play record “Never Be The Same” featuring the popular single “Heart Of Gold.”

“Katie’s singing reminds me of some of the best woman vocalists of the 70’s folk rock movement, hints of Stevie Nicks and Linda Thompson.” The Modern Folk Music of America

“She squeezes every last drop of emotion out of the words she’s singing. Her own songs like, To Be a Woman, Dawn Chorus and What You Need are beautifully crafted songs, delivered from the heart and with a voice that holds the audience’s attention rapt.” Even the Stars Blog

Come and kiss the Blarney stone! Well, maybe not, but you can hear a live band by the same name – Kiss the Blarney. Yes, you’ve guessed, Goostrey Goes to Ireland this year, with themed entertainment and food to give you a lively evening of ‘craic’ (the Irish term for an evening of fun, entertainment and enjoyable conversation). You provide the conversation, and Goosfest will provide the rest.

We’ll begin with supper, so you’ll have comfortably full tummies to sit and watch the entertainment.

After supper, there’ll be great Irish music from Kiss the Blarney, a locally based trio of talented musicians including a whistle-playing flautist, a singer guitarist, and a banjo/mandolin-playing vocalist. Exhibits also include a professionally- taken album of photographs of children in their everyday activities at Goostrey Primary School in the mid-1960s. A number of people still living in the village can be identified. Are you one of them? Can you spot past residents on photographs in our large collection? We’ve also arranged an appearance by local dancers from the Fraser School of Irish Dance, founded by Irish dancer Catherine Fraser in 1994 following the “Riverdance” phenomenon. Dancers from the FSID performed on the BBC’s ‘Children in Need’ broadcast last November and some were also part of ‘Longest Riverdance Line’ Guinness World Record Breakers in Dublin, July 2013.

Catherine teaches dancers from the age of 4 years to adult, and up to competition standard, in both traditional and contemporary styles of Irish dance. And for our Goosfest Irish evening, Catherine’s hoping to ‘teach’ volunteers from the audience how to ‘stepdance’ with the best of them.

So, make sure your shamrocks are shining for the night, bring along your favourite leprechaun to enjoy the fun – and feel free to dress in appropriate colours – emerald green, orange, gold, white to put yourself in the mood for some Irish fun. Bain sult as an tráthnóna!

Dr Anthony Holloway, from Jodrell Bank, has regularly run astrophotography courses at Jodrell Bank to sell out audiences and we are delighted that this year he is bringing his expertise and fabulous photos of the Northern Lights to Goosfest.

If you have ever had an unsuccessful trip to see the Aurora, been disappointed with the photos you captured or simply not had the chance to go, then this is the opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis in all its glory from the comfort of Goosfest.

The Aurora is an incredible natural light show caused by the interaction of particles streaming from the Sun in the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. This results in the excitation of gases in our atmosphere which produce the aurora and Anthony has used his skill and passion for astrophotography to capture it at its best.

Our opening act is Midlands comic Carl Jones, who first hit the circuit in 2011 after winning the Nottingham Comedy Festival Best Newcomer in his first handful of gigs. Since then, he’s gone on to reach the BBC New Comedy Award heats, the latter stages of numerous national new act competitions and to gig at some of the top comedy clubs across the UK.

Away from the stage, Carl is a regular contributor to BBC Radio’s comedy output and his writing can regularly be heard on ‘Newsjack’, ‘The Show What You Wrote’ and, most recently, as additional writer on national institution ‘The News Quiz’ on BBC Radio 4.

With a growing reputation as a storytelling comedian and MC who can play a variety of rooms, he performs regularly in a wide range of comedy clubs of all sizes across the UK.

Lindsay Santoro then brings some Brummie fun to the evening, recounting tales of her misadventures in life, all in her trademark down-to-earth, side-splitting style.

She made the semi-finals of the BBC New Comedy Awards in 2016 and describes her style as a mix of the down-to-earth and the madcap. In 2019 she is now headlining gigs and has been signed by a top comedy agency.

“One of the most naturally hysterical and gifted comedians in recent memory” – Joe Lycett.

Also on Tuesday 15th October Goosfest Buzz Comedy Night Goostrey Village Hall: 8pm. (Licensed bar opens 7pm)Tickets £12 (Over 18 admission)

Goosfest Buzz Comedy Night is a staple in the festival schedule – always a sell-out and much-loved. This year’s line-up promises a special night of laughter – all with the flair of the West Midlands!

Our compere is Ryan Gough, a stand-up comedian who hails from the dodgy ‘drive-by-shooting’ area of Birmingham.

Far from being eye candy, he is 6 foot 5 inches tall with a shaved head and is usually cast in thuggish roles. Indeed, he will not be presenting any kids programmes or auditioning for any boy bands in the near future.

As well as being a stand-up comedian who has performed in every comedy club from Inverness to Plymouth – he has appeared on TV in ‘Dalziel and Pascoe’, ‘Brum’, and ‘Teachers.’

He has recently filmed a series of TV adverts in India for an Asian Cable TV Channel where he painted himself yellow, glued a huge handlebar moustache onto his face, wore a skin-tight leotard and played the part of a wrestler by chasing a young lady round a kitchen Benny Hill style whilst advertising Chapatti Flour!

Wednesday 16th October “The Issue of Micro Plastics” – A Lecture by Dr Deborah Maw (In collaboration with Goostrey Guild). Goostrey Methodist Church: 10-12 noon with short refreshment interval. Tickets £5 (No charge for Guild members)

Micro Plastics are a major environmental problem and have even been found on the top of Mount Everest. Dr Deborah Maw has been researching and creating art works to highlight the issue of marine plastics in British waters for 10 years. For the past two years, she has focused on micro plastics, undertaking several research expeditions. Deborah is an exceptionally skilled speaker, experienced teacher, independent researcher and trans-disciplinary practitioner. Bridging the gap between art and science Dr Maw works to promote environmental awareness. Deborah,

who was a research biochemist and science teacher before studying art, said:

“The issue of micro plastics is a massive problem and affects our health. It’s now found in 70 percent of the fish we eat, and we end up with plastic in our bodies.

Micro plastic acts like a sponge for chemicals floating in the ocean.”www.goosfest.comArts & Music Festival

And our Headliner is Andy White, another Brummie, who escaped from a call centre to become a stand-up comic. He combines silly voices and a mad afro to devastating comic effect. Andy’s humour embraces impressions, funny faces, observational humour, topical humour, and his mixed-race background. He can do material that’s clever, cheeky, or just plain daft, and his performance can shift from deadpan to loud and physical. Andy has played to a wide variety of audiences, adults and children, both at home and abroad, in comedy clubs, theatres, universities, Radio and TV shows, and at corporate entertainment events. His achievements include winning ‘The Weakest Link’ Comedians’ Special on BBC, and he was described as ‘oozing talent’ by ‘What’s On’ magazine.

“The finest purveyors of Balkan music this side of a Lada scrap heap.”

The Budapest Café Orchestra (comprising Balkan Bob on violin and doumbek, The Dragon on button accordion, Kelvin the Klaw on big daddy violin and The Sultan on saz, guitar and balalaika) is now an internationally famous music-driven phenomenon where their virtuoso musical ability is almost matched by their humour. They enthral audiences wherever they perform and will undoubtedly sweep you off your feet and stay in your heart forever as you journey from one emotional pole to another: from a tragic evocative heart-rending ancient Jewish melody to a dance from Romania or Russia. Their magic potion is a closely guarded recipe of malt, hops, yeast and water, handed down in the secret tongue of Estuary English through generations of Professional Gypsies. With a sole mission: to entertain and enchant audiences, they are undaunted by even the most demanding and wildest village hall audiences.

Barbara Dickson’s skills as an interpreter of new and traditional songs and Rab Noake’s reputation as one of Scotland’s finest singer-songwriters provide an enviable platform for this unique show. Barbara and Rab have been friends since they were teenagers, singing and playing in venues around Scotland. As separate acts they often found themselves performing alongside each other (and other musical luminaries). They have ‘occasionally’ performed together live, sung on each other’s records and remained friends for over 40 years. From her folk scene roots of the late 1960’s through to mainstream chart success with hits including ‘Answer Me’, ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, ‘January, February’ and

the million-selling number one single, ‘I Know Him So Well’, Barbara Dickson has long since cemented her status as one of the UK’s best-loved performers. As Scotland’s best-selling female album artist, she has earned 6 platinum, 11 gold and 7 silver albums. Her stage career has included the roles of the original Mrs Johnstone in Willy Russell’s long-running musical, ‘Blood Brothers’ and as Viv Nicholson in ‘Spend Spend Spend,’ both of which have won her an Olivier award for ‘Best Actress.’ Barbara was awarded an O.B.E. in the 2002 New Year’s Honours for her services to music and drama and, with an album of the songs of Gerry Rafferty, and her latest release ‘Winter’, she continues to record and to play to sold-out audiences throughout the UK.

Rab Noakes emerged as a key player in one of the early waves of singer-songwriters in the 1970s. Since then he has enjoyed a varied and illustrious musical life including being a member of Stealers Wheel, writing songs for hit-makers Lindisfarne, regular appearances on iconic shows such as John Peel and The Old Grey Whistle Test, many records, interesting collaborations and consistent touring. TV, radio and live appearances continue apace and he is currently at work on a new album.

Our support act is a much-loved previous Goosfest visitor, Edwina Hayes, a Yorkshire based singer songwriter described by Nanci Griffith, with whom

she has toured three times, as ‘The Sweetest Voice in England.’ With several highly acclaimed albums to her credit, Edwina has opened 26 shows for Jools Holland and besides touring with Barbara Dickson, she has also toured with Van Morrison and Loudon Wainwright III.
