URGENT: News To Parents

Over-The-Counter Drug Abuse

Although overall drug use has declinedin the last several years, parents are of-ten unaware that the abuse of over-the-counter medications has become oneof the latest threats. Many containDextromethorphan (DXM), a coughsuppressant, which when taken in ex-cessive amounts can cause delusions, loss of consciousness, and even death.Even more startling is that some teensconsume these drugs with alcohol, making the effects even more danger-ous. Because these medications can befound in nearly every home, it is im-portant that parents understand thescope of the issue. Click here for more:www.lcad.org/resources/Enews19/OTCdrugs.pdf

Your Teen’s Latest High Might HitCloser

Thank You Think - Cough/ColdRemedies

From The MedicineCabinet - A Convenient New

High For Your Teen!

Many parents have no idea thatteens are abusing these products. But, 1 in 25 eighth graders abusedover-the-counter (OTC) coughand cold remedies in the past year.

Cough and cold season means many teens haveeasier access to these products. Like prescriptiondrugs, OTC cough and cold remedies are oftenfound at home. In many areas, teens can buythem at supermarkets, pharmacies, and conve-nience stores. But, that doesn’t make them safeto use without supervision. Parents can help stopabuse of these products with three steps:

1. Safeguard your prescription and OTC drugs, especially those containing DXM. Monitor quan-tities and control access. Ask friends and familyto do the same.

2. Properly conceal and dispose of old or un-used medicines in the trash.

3. Set clear rules for teens about all drug and al-cohol use, including never taking medicineswithout permission and always following properdosages. And, be a good role model when itcomes to taking your own medicines. Watch forwarning signs your teen is using, such as emptybottles or packages and behavior changes, suchas mood swings, or changes in appetite or sleephabits.

Parenting for Prevention:Using Technology to Strengthen Family Ties

While it may seem likeyou’ve “lost” your teen tosocial technology, likeFacebook or text messag-ing, a new report finds thatthis technology - namelythe Internet and cellphones - is actually creating a “new connected-ness” for American families. In particular, par-ents say cell phones allow their families to staymore regularly in touch. And many parents saythey are now using the Internet to view materialon-line together.

Are you using technology to its best advantage? Before you put your trust in the latest gadgets, make sure you set a few ground rules for yourfamily:
