“The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”2020 saw to that, now didn’t it? When everything that was planned gets upended, there

is nothing to do but your best. Despite all the trials of 2020, I commend you, the Nobility andLadies, for locking arms with us and making the best of things.

What we were able to do, I hope we had fun doing it. When we were able to see one another, I hope the fellowship was terrific.Being at the helm of Morocco, as the year began, my goal was simple. I wanted to move

the needle just a little toward improved unity, philanthropy and communication (UPC). Myassessment of how this went is not important. Yours is. But, please know that your Pandemic Potentate did his best in thisregard set among upended plans, the need for extreme cost savings, and amid challenges that haven’t presented themselves since1918.

In terms of attendance at stated sessions, numbers of new Nobles, and the morale I see as I traverse Morocco’s realm, itdoesn’t feel like we have lost ground despite all the good reasons for doing so. This is a tribute to YOU, Morocco. I am confidentthat Morocco will exit this pandemic as united as ever, enjoying each other’s company as a stronger Shrine Center.

There are so many positive things ahead for Morocco! There is an undercurrent of excitement in the air. As I write this, our zoning legislation that our building sale hinges on has returned, without issue, from Tallahassee. It has a

host of Duval committees and meetings to move through one more time. We don’t expect this to be finally completed in 2020.But, it continues to move in the right direction, albeit at a glacial pace.

The Shriners Children’s Clinic in Gainesville was slated to fully open in 2020, but then COVID! But the exciting news is thatthey are open and seeing patients on a limited basis. It is located in the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute building at theUniversity of Florida at 3450 Hull Road in Gainesville. The clinic occupies the 4th floor. At last, we have a clinic within Morocco’srealm. While they are not open for tours and cannot allow volunteers yet, the clinic administrators are eager for the day whenthey can open fully. Stand by for more information in coming months on this. This is an exciting development!

Finally, as this year draws to a close, I’ve had folks lament on Jennifer’s and my behalf…that we got the short end of the stickwhen it comes to a Potentate’s year. In fact, there are 122 potentates around the world whose well-planned year didn’t turn outas expected. Think of all the Worshipful Masters and other organization leaders. So, we are in excellent company. I’d be lyingif I said that Jennifer and I are not a little disappointed that we couldn’t do all the things we’d planned. (We really did have somefun events and trips planned.) But, the truth is that it’s never been my or our year. We feel it was a tremendous honor to betemporarily elevated to a place of leadership among our peers. The pandemic is nobody’s fault, and it called us to do our best.

What’s more, I don’t feel the point, or privilege of being on the Divan is being Potentate for a brief year. The reward for theseven years of service as a Divan member is getting to know you, enjoying meeting and counting you as friends, seeing first handwhat superheroes do for these kids everyday, and learning and participating in the operation of Morocco. These years havebeen a true privilege to Jennifer and I…every day of it and we will miss it. We thank you for that tremendous opportunity.

Morocco, you are the very best Shrine Center on the planet, and the best is ahead of us.

Well here we are, another year hasalmost come and gone and what a yearit has been. It would be far too easy torecount all the cancelled plans anddisappointments of 2020, but Ichoose rather to reflect on all thegood times we’ve shared with you.

Shrine Day was absolutelywonderful and all I had everexpected since coming on the line in2014. We sure appreciated everyone’ssupport that day and the days leading upto it. February brought us a fun-filledstated session, Valentines at the Beachwas the theme and the costumes werefantastic. Many people participatedshowing us great support, Bruce and Iwere very humbled by this. DaveGilpin’s costume still comes to mindwhen I recall this event. We marchedstraight into Mardi Gras Madness for ourthird (and ironically what would becomeour last stated session for many months)but again, Chef did not disappoint andserved an amazing authentic creoledinner and the Rubrights suppliedZydeco music and several helped me setup the decorations.

September finally arrived and wereconvened with a stated sessionfollowed by a wine tasting event for theladies. Thank you to all who stayed toparticipate and show your support as I

continue to raise funds for my project.October was probably one of myfavorite stated sessions as comedianJuanita Lolita filled the auditorium with

laughter which was much neededmedicine for all. The walk-around magician, Hillary Cowartwas a fun treat too.

As I write this we arepreparing for our final stated

dinner as your 2020 PandemicPotentate and First Lady. It has been anhonor to serve you this year and we lookforward to thanking many forsupporting us, but most importantlysupporting Morocco and the ShrinersHealthcare System.

In closing, 2020 may not have beenthe year any of us planned, but I believeevery cloud has a silver lining. Manyhave said Bruce and I deserve anotheryear, but we both believe “It’s not aboutthe year we’re Potentate and First Lady, but rather all the years leading up to itthat are filled with good times and greatfriends and together those make theBEST memories!” Thank you to all whohave been there with us on this journey.Your friendship, kindness and supporthave been the greatest gifts. You willalways be Superheros to us.
