Good morning!
I hope you’ve had a great week!
Be praying for us as we are at Uplift this week. We know that God is doing great things in the lives of our students this week.
Make sure that your students are getting signed up for everything this summer. Guys and girls retreat is coming very soon and we still have our mission trip to staff. We need all the help we can get!
If you haven’t gotten to know our interns yet, they’re rockstars. Invite them out to lunch or dinner with your family sometime and get to know them!
That’s all I have for this week, see you soon! Tucker

How much time do you spend each day preparing?
Four points for spiritual preparation:
Priority Matthew 6:33
Luke 12:34
Deuteronomy 6:5 Purpose Ecclesiastes 12:13
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Place Ephesians 1:22-23
Ephesians 4:16
Hebrews 10:24-25
Colossians 3:16 Practice Philippians 4:9
Ephesians 2:10
Are you prepared today?
Self-C
ontrol
Ask your kids, “O
reos or apple slices?” Sometim
es we have to m
ake some
very tough choices. It’s so easy give into the temptation to eat a w
hole pack of O
reos instead of eating something that’s healthy for our bodies
like apple slices. It’s also very easy to lose your temper, talk ugly about
other people, and say things that aren’t true. Does G
od want us to do these
things? God w
ants us to have self-control. What do you struggle w
ith w
hen it comes to self-control? H
ave children write their struggles dow
n.
Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit! Self-control is the ability to keep ourselves from
doing things that we shouldn’t do, or that w
ouldn’t be good for us or for people around us. Proverbs says, “like a city w
hose walls are broken through is a person w
ho lacks self-con-trol.”
Read Proverbs
25:28. A
sk w
hat this
verse m
eans to
them.
Self-control is a gift from G
od, and we can alw
ays ask him to
help us have more self-control. Th
e Bible also tells us that God
will not let us be tem
pted beyond what w
e can handle, and that he
will
always
provide a
way
out. Read
1 C
orinthians 10:13.
Read 2
Peter 1:5-7
and rem
ind your
children about
God
wanting
us to
make
every effort
to have
self-control. W
hen we w
ake up each day, we need to start our day out right w
ith prayer. Pray for all the good G
od will do through you that day. Pray for strength
to stay away from
evil. You get a clean slate every morning. Every day ask
God to help you control yourself. Just be prepared! W
hen we pray for
self-control, God w
ill give us every opportunity to do so. The best w
ay to G
AIN
self-control is to practice it! Have children put a large “X” over
their struggles and write the w
ord “PRAY” over it. Tell the children to put this paper beside their bed as a rem
inder to pray for self-control over the things they struggle w
ith before they get out of the bed each morning.
If using this guide in solitude, begin by thanking God in prayer for the
time to privately connect w
ith Him
and spend time in H
is Word. A
sk G
od to open your heart as you study. Write your answ
ers to the questions, using additional paper if needed.
If using this guide with others, begin by asking G
od in prayer to bless you as you share the experience together studying H
is Word. A
sk the Spirit to teach you H
is truth as you study. Discuss your answ
ers to the questions.
What are som
e of your favorite oxymorons? (for exam
ple: jumbo shrim
p, rubber cem
ent, etc.)
Read the text for these devotionals again - 2 Peter 1:1-10. For this devotional, w
e focus on adding to self-control to our faith. Some w
ould say the term
is a little misleading. Self-control sounds as though w
e are capable of controlling ourselves. Paul listed self-control as a fruit of the Spirit (G
alatians 5:23). If it is self-control, what does the Spirit have to do
with it? H
ow does the Spirit help you control yourself?
How
does this spiritual attribute differ from som
eone who does not follow
C
hrist, but is a well-m
annered, disciplined person?
How
often would those closest to you (fam
ily, good friends, co-workers)
say you exhibit the fruit of self-control?
___ Rarely ___ Sometim
es ___ Often ___ A
lways
Most do w
ell in some areas, but m
ay struggle in others. What is one
area where you excel in self-control? W
hat is one area where you need to
improve?
What can you do to add self-control to your faith?
If using this guide in solitude, begin by thanking G
od in prayer for the tim
e to privately connect w
ith Him
. Ask the Spirit to guide you into truth as you spend tim
e in the W
ord. Write your answ
ers to the questions, using additional paper if needed.
If using this guide with others,
begin by
thanking
God
in prayer for this opportunity to be together. Ask the Spirit to guide you into truth as you spend tim
e in the Word. D
iscuss your answers to the questions.
Read 2 Peter 1:5-11 together to get started.
This m
onth, our topic is self-control. Self-control is not an easy task. In fact, w
e live in a culture that doesn’t put much value on self-control. You can have
whatever you w
ant and as much of it as you can handle.
Read Proverbs 25:28
What is this verse saying? H
ow does a lack of self-control break dow
n our spiritual w
alls of protection?
Self-control is so important to our spiritual journey. W
e are called to live to a higher standard and if w
e are giving into every temptation w
e see every day at school, w
ork, or at the ball field, we are not dem
onstrating self-con-trol and it is going to dam
age us spiritually. How
ever, we can’t have spiritual
self-control on our own. W
e need Jesus’ help!
A preacher said this about self-control, “True self-control is not about bring-
ing ourselves under our own control, but under the pow
er of Christ.” Th
at’s how
this self-control thing works. Self-control is not about going to the gym
every day, counting calories, only playing so m
uch video games, getting your
homew
ork done on time every night, etc. Self-control is about us aligning
our life with Jesus so that H
is power is steering us into being m
ore like Him
.
If you want to be like Jesus, you have to w
ork on your self-control. In fact, H
e had the best self-control. Look what the H
ebrew w
riter says in Hebrew
s 4:15
He com
mitted no sin - displaying the ultim
ate power of self-control. If w
e w
ant to protect ourselves from the toll that sin takes on our lives, w
e have to not only em
ulate Jesus, but rely on His pow
er, through prayer, to lead us to w
hat real self-control looks like.
Make it real:
How
does self-control play a part in your life?
What are som
e ways you can rely on Jesus to help you have m
ore self-con-trol?
What is one specific thing in your spiritual life you have a problem
con-trolling? W
e all have a sin that we need to get under control. W
hat can you do this w
eek to live out self-control?
