Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Jerome,

Pax Christi semper vobiscum! On the Second Sunday of Advent back in December,

the second-year students of Confirmation were introduced to our community during the Saturday 5:00pm vigil Mass. We received them into the Rite of Candidacy, and each of them also left their letter of commitment at the High Altar behind the Tabernacle as a symbol of their awareness to their promise of responsibility as they deepen their knowledge of the Lord. Being their pastor and catechist, I must admit that I am often challenged as I continue to invite them to participate at Mass each weekend. There are some of them who simply do not come to Mass for various reasons. Whether it is their sports schedule, the inclement weather, a family event or any other excuse that prevents them from coming to church, I simply find myself struggling on how to entice them to take the opportunity to have an intimate encounter with Jesus Christ through regular reception of the Sacraments.

Our First Thursday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is intended to ask the Lord for more workers in God’s vineyard. Knowing that we have plenty of students and extraordinary ministers, I thought that it would be a good opportunity for us to be gathered in front of Jesus to ask Him to send us holy laborers into the Church. Unfortunately, this spiritual exercise apparently seems irrelevant to many. We are often oblivious to the obvious reality that our Church needs individuals who are willing to dedicate themselves to priestly and religious life as well as consecrated lay people for the sake of the Gospel. Why does it seem that an hour of prayer to ask the Lord for holy laborers on the first Thursday of the month is a tremendous struggle for many? More so, why is it that our children who are enrolled in our Religious Education program are not being ushered or introduced by us who are responsible for their spiritual care to have a joyful encounter with God during holy days, especially on Sundays which happen to be holy days of obligation?

I am very concerned as your parish priest for the generation that is entrusted to us. We have the responsibility to provide our young children with an opportunity to meet the Lord in a place that is designated for these encounters so that they would get to know Him well. Being Confirmed or receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion are important divine moments for all of us, as God’s grace comes to us through these Sacraments. Yet, oftentimes, we are missing the most valuable point because there are some of us who consider these events simply as another activity or a tradition that which needs to be perpetuated because this is what is meant to be Catholic. Our reception of the Holy Sacraments must define our knowledge of God in a manner that God is involved in our lives and us in His divine life. In addition, this divine encounter should become transformative moments for all of us so that we may grow in a right relationship with Our Lord. These

Estimados feligreses y amigos de San Jerónimo, ¡Pax Christi semper vobiscum! El segundo domingo de Adviento en diciembre, los

estudiantes de segundo año de Confirmación fueron presentados a nuestra comunidad durante la misa de vigilia del sábado a las 5:00pm. Los recibimos en el Rito de Candidatura, y cada uno de ellos también dejó su carta de compromiso en el Altar Mayor detrás del Tabernáculo como símbolo de su conciencia a su promesa de responsabilidad a medida que profundizan su conocimiento del Señor. Siendo su párroco y catequista, debo admitir que frecuentemente me retan a medida que continúo invitándolos a participar en la misa cada fin de semana. Hay algunos de ellos que simplemente no vienen a misa por varias razones. Ya sea que sea su horario deportivo, las inclemencias del tiempo, un evento familiar o cualquier otra excusa que les impida venir a la iglesia, simplemente me encuentro luchando sobre cómo atraerlos para aprovechar la oportunidad de tener un encuentro íntimo con Jesucristo a través de la rutina recepción de los sacramentos.

Estoy muy preocupado como su párroco por la generación que nos ha sido confiada. debe definir nuestro conocimiento de Dios de una manera que Dios esté involucrado en nuestras vidas y en nosotros en su vida divina. Además, este encuentro divino debe convertirse en momentos transformadores para todos nosotros para que podamos crecer en una relación correcta con Nuestro Señor. Estos momentos de gracia en virtud de los sacramentos son, de hecho, nuestro acceso a la naturaleza divina de Dios que se manifiesta por los signos sacramentales, más especialmente en la Eucaristía, que es la presencia real de Jesucristo.

moments of grace by virtue of the sacraments are, indeed, our access to the divine nature of God that is manifested by the sacramental signs, most especially in the Eucharist, which is the Real Presence of Jesus Christ.

So, I am making an appeal to the families of our children who are enrolled in our sacramental preparations. I would like to ask specifically the parents of the children of my class to help me introduce them to Jesus Christ by bringing them to Mass on Sundays and to the Adoration for Vocations on the first Thursday of each month. To you students, I am aware that I have given you plenty of requirements, and I hope that you will not aim at passing the class simply by turning in your projects so that you will be confirmed. My goal for you is to introduce you to Our Lord Jesus so that you will leave my class and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation holding in your hearts an encounter that is meaningful and life changing. I ask our community also to pray for our children who are enrolled in our sacramental preparation programs. We are responsible for them because they will be the future of our community of faith if they are properly introduced into the life of God.

The Gospel story that you heard this weekend is a perfect example of what I am talking about. The meeting of John the Baptist with Jesus by the Jordan River is a classic example of a divine encounter. The recognition of John the Baptist regarding the role of Jesus in the history of salvation is something deep that emanated from his personal knowledge of God. How? God revealed to John by the power of the Holy Spirit who the Messiah was and the role that He would be involved with in the life of God’s people. That same Holy Spirit that came down upon Jesus in the Jordan is the same Holy Spirit that will come down upon our young people when they are confirmed in May 2020. It will be the same Spirit that will transform the Bread and Wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ that our candidates for First Holy Communion will receive.

That Holy Spirit is the same Spirit that comes down upon us every time we are gathered during Sundays at Mass.

Once again, I ask everyone in our parish to take your commitment to discipleship to heart. We are entrusted with a mission and we all ought to be participants in this project. God remains involved in our lives, but it is important that we demonstrate His involvement in us as we participate in the life of the Church. I have a lot more to share with you next weekend. Please let me know if you have other ideas on how our catechists and myself could better assist your children to a meaningful encounter with the Lord during the process of their sacramental preparations.

Second Year Confirmation Field Trip | Paseo del Segundo Año de Confirmación

Mesías y el papel con el que estaría involucrado en la vida del pueblo de Dios. Ese mismo Espíritu Santo que vino sobre Jesús en el Jordán es el mismo Espíritu Santo que caerá sobre nuestros jóvenes cuando sean confirmados en mayo de 2020. Será el mismo Espíritu que transformará el Pan y el Vino en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesucristo que recibirán nuestros candidatos a la Primera Comunión. Ese Espíritu Santo es el mismo Espíritu que desciende sobre nosotros cada vez que nos reunimos durante los domingos en la misa.

Una vez más, les pido a todos en nuestra parroquia a que tomen en serio su compromiso de discipulado. Se nos ha confiado una misión y todos deberíamos ser participantes en este proyecto. Dios permanece involucrado en nuestras vidas, pero es importante que demostremos su participación en nosotros a medida que participamos en la vida de la Iglesia. Tengo mucho más para compartir el próximo fin de semana. Avíseme si tiene otras ideas sobre cómo nuestros catequistas y yo podríamos ayudar mejor a sus hijos a un encuentro significativo con el Señor durante el proceso de sus preparaciones sacramentales.

Tax Time! To All St. Jerome’s Parish Contributors

This is the time when we must file our income taxes for the year 2019. To help the parish save money, we will only send tax contribution statements to those who request it. Statements will be made available by January 31st. Parishioners have the option to receive their statements by mail or to pick them up at the parish office. If you need a statement with your contributions for 2019, please complete the request form below, or complete one of the blank forms at the back of church, and drop it in the collection basket on Sunday.

wedding anniversaries are invited for the renewal of their wedding vows during all Masses on the first weekend. Please register at the Parish Office to participate in the celebration. If you would like to publish your wedding picture in the bulletin,

please bring your picture to the Parish Office two weeks before the Mass.
