“RENEWAL 2016” BEGINS!
Our annual Finance Campaign to underwrite and
financially secure our ministries for 2016. “Renewal 2016”
BEGINS ON SUNDAY, October 11th, and concludes on
the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving, November
22nd, with the Dedication of Pledges at the 10:00
a.m. Service of Worship. Throughout this time there
will be a personal witness shared on every Sunday by a
member of our Church family. Plan to be in attendance each week to
hear words spoken from the heart about our ministries in the past, the
present, and the future, as together we prepare to commit ourselves
through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service to being
faithful witnesses in Christ’s name to this community and to the world in
the upcoming year!

What are the odds of meeting a high school classmate while greeting congregants at the east entrance of the Fullerton First United Methodist Church? Furthermore, what are the chances of finding a direct descendant of
Mayflower arrival John Alden?
The rewards are many in our
congregation.
Case in point: When I asked Sue Cantrell Currie for an interview, she casually mentioned she attended Garden Grove High School, Class of 1958. Lo and behold, she was one year ahead of my GGHS graduating class, and I knew many
of the people in her friendship circle. We didn’t, however, recognize each
other at the church door.
To learn more about Sue, I phoned her the next week, and just randomly posed the question, “Are you a descendant from anyone
famous, say from the Mayflower or someplace else?”
Again, I struck gold.
Going back to the 1620 voyage of the Pilgrim ship Mayflower, Sue’s relative, John Alden, was a crew member who was the cooper responsible for maintaining the ship’s barrels. He also signed the Mayflower Compact, and before he married fellow passenger, Priscilla Mullins, he took pride in
her cooking skills at the first Thanksgiving in America.
“When you’re a descendant of John Alden, you’re related to four members of the family: John, Priscilla and her parents,” Sue explained. “Half the Mayflower passengers died that first year, including Priscilla’s parents, but after John and Priscilla were married, all of their 11 children
lived.
“They say there are more than 1.5 million descendants of the Aldens,” She added. “In fact, there’s a gentleman in my apartment building who is a
distant relative, and we figure we’re cousins somewhere down the line.”
Ultimately, Sue’s link was enough to qualify her for membership in the
Mayflower Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
And that wasn’t all Sue had to offer. Her mother’s side of the family lived in Michigan while her father’s side called South Carolina home,
leaving the families to be on opposing sides during the Civil War.
“My great-grandfather was captured after the Battle of Peach Orchard at Gettysburg, and imprisoned as a prisoner of war,” Sue said. “During the
Did you know that . . . . . ?
Depression in the 1930s, his daughter (my grandmother) returned to my great-grandmother’s house in Michigan to raise her nine children, including two girls and seven boys, after her alcoholic husband fled the family. The only income my great-grandmother had to help with household expenses was her POW husband’s pension from the Civil
War.”
Those seven boys served in World War II, and six came home. According to the new laws, families nowadays cannot
send all their sons to war.
Sue’s saga took another interesting turn when she worked at Disneyland during her teen years. Initially, she was employed by Fritos Company while attending Garden Grove High. Eventually, she was hired by Disney to work on the Matterhorn when it opened
in 1959.
By 1963, Sue was happily married to a former Marine and eventually raising a son and two sets of twins. Her husband, Travis Currie, owned the Chevron station at the busy corner of Haster Street and Chapman Avenue in Garden
Grove.
“I took him to my 10-year high school reunion, and he knew more people than I just because of his business,” she said.
The two divorced in 1979.
Sue eventually worked 10 years for a vitamin manufacturer, and then moved to Portland, Oregon to care for
her parents for the next 10 years.
“I returned to Orange County in 1998 to be closer to my children and grandchildren,” she said. At the time, her diabetes was affecting her eyes, but they eventually stabilized. She

Learning Works Charter School founded in Pasadena in 2008 is a public charter school and
serves about 500 high school students, 25% of whom are on probation and 16% of whom are
pregnant or parents. It provides academic education and relevant life skills to students in grades 7
to 12 who are in danger of withdrawing from mainstream education. Many of these students are
in crisis due to facing homelessness, poverty, pregnancy, broken families, and incarceration. An
innovative aspect of the school is that the staff includes 12 “chasers” who literally chase students
back to school to complete coursework and graduate. Chasing includes coaching, mentoring, and
tutoring. They also transport students to needed services such as probation appointments, health
services and whatever else may be a barrier to the students' paths to a high school diploma.
Chasers are college students who come from similar conditions as the students and may have been
a previous dropout, juvenile delinquent or teen parent. Relationships are a key to keeping students
in school and the “chasers” as well as the entire staff are committed to their students.

News, News, News
Interviewed and written by Barbara Giasone
knew, however, she wanted to live alone and be near bus and train transportation. The Klimpel Manor on Amerige
Avenue in back of the Fullerton First United Methodist Church filled her needs.
“I had visited another church in downtown Fullerton, but it seemed no one was very friendly,” Sue, 75, recalled. “I
decided to try the Methodist Church, and was welcomed by so many people the first Sunday.”
Within the past 10 years, Sue has served as a greeter, usher, on the Worship, Outreach and Hot Meals
committees, and with the Mary Martha women’s group.
She also collects newspapers in her apartment building for the Chapel on Wheels Paper Drive. And she regularly
gives out vouchers to the homeless.
“This church is family,” she said. “Everyone is just so friendly.”
And she has her own family with which to keep in touch. Tim works for NASA in Virginia, Ted is employed by the U.S. Postal Service, Denise is a bookkeeper for a plumbing firm and Dean is “a jack of all trades” in Fountain Valley.
(Oldest son Clayton died when he was 29.) Five grandchildren also vie for Grandma Sue’s attention.
Although legally blind, Sue remains committed to her church home. A ready smile at the east door Sunday after
Sunday could, who knows, bring more coincidences.

FULLERTON FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S MISSION STATEMENT
Fullerton First United Methodist Church is a community of faith that seeks to be a growing and dynamic church in Fullerton with an outreach to this region of Orange County and beyond. We are a part of a world-wide communion who believe in God’s transforming love as demonstrated by the life and teaching and living influence of Jesus. Believing that we are undergirded by God’s presence through God’s Holy Spirit in our daily living, we serve God as we endeavor: to reach out and receive persons into the faith family as they are; to help persons relate to God and grow in their commitment to the values exemplified in Jesus; to provide opportunities for persons to grow and deepen their faith as Christian disciples; to send persons into God’s creation as faithful disciples. As God’s peop le we seek to bring a fresh vision of hope as we minister to one another and the larger community in which we reside. We seek to faithfully live out these four foundational missional principles. We shall endeavor to be a place of grace in today’s world.
