Every year, 12 young singers receive scholarships for three weeks of intensive training inItalian music, culture and language. The course brings together the greatest livinginterpreters and teachers with outstanding student singers and repetiteurs. The Accademiaoffers masterclasses of the highest standards in musicianship, language and dramaticinterpretation, providing students with the vital bridge between the end of formal trainingand professional life.

The Accademia has already established itself as one of the leading Italian opera courses, andin 2008 added to its programme a two week course for repetiteurs.

We would like to thank all those who have supported the work of the Accademia over thelast eight years, and who have helped us realise this dream. In particular, for the productionof this CD, we thank the Rolex Institute, the Mirolli family from Castiglione and the NandoPeretti Foundation.

This CD is dedicated to Valerie Solti. She is our Fairy Godmother, and her support, generosity and inspiration have done an inestimable amount to make the Accademia what itis today.

Italian Song is a diverse field, ranging from the eloquent simplicity of Bellini, to the full-blooded writing of Puccini and Santoliquido. It is often maligned, but maligned only throughignorance of its vast range and a snobbery that asserts that German Lieder is the only artsong form of any worth.

Unlike previous recordings we have made of opera arias, here each song is ‘whole’ in itself, with the accompaniment written specifically for piano, and each presents a more satisfyingexperience than an aria out of context could hope to. That said, I have included one Vivaldiaria, which has become a staple of song recitals, thanks to its intrinsic beauty: Sposa, sondisprezzata, sung by the villaness Irene, has actually been attributed to Geminiano Giacomelliand was used by Vivaldi in his construction of the pasticcio Bajazet.

The Vivaldi aria gives us a starting date of 1735, while Santoliquido’s death takes up right upto 1971. This programme does include standards – by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Rossini –but I hope it will also include some unfamiliar gems: the opening song illustrates the moreimpressionistic output of Respighi, while curiosities like Puccini’s Mentia l’avviso, written in1883 as part of his final examination at the conservatoire in Milan, already contains the bigtune that he was to recycle into the wonderful tenor aria from Manon Lescaut. This scena fortenor feels very operatic, right down to its highly orchestral piano part. A recognisableoperatic character in these songs is Servilia (La Clemenza di Tito) in the Bellini Almen se nonposs’io, lamenting her struggles and her suffering in having been rejected by Annio.

The Respighi sits side by side with another Bellini song which, despite similarities of subject –moon, night etc. – couldn’t be from a more different musical world. Paolo Tosti, unfairlydenigrated for the apparent ease with which he was able to turn out songs on demand, actually produced some very beautiful music, and this first of his song-cycle Quattro Canzonid’Amaranta is one of his most bleak, yet passionate and dramatic, a scena for soprano whichsmacks of Tosca and La Traviata. The second of the Quattro Canzoni d’Amaranta has nowbecome a staple of tenor repertoire, particularly as an encore. Verdi’s song Pieta Signor is alsoless well known and might remind the listener of Fiesco’s opening aria in Simon Boccanegra, even in its sentiment.

This Solti 100th celebration CD celebrates the art of Italian song

Santoliquido wrote Un’Ora di Sole in 1910 - just nine years after Verdi’s death, yet it, too, isfrom another world. His music is rarely performed, probably a result of his fascist politicalwritings in the 1930s, as well as his reclusive lifestyle. He lived in Anacapri, the subject of thissong, high up in the mountains looking down on the rest of the island of Capri.

Best known for his opera Il segreto di Susanna - and her secret was that she smoked - Wolf-Ferrari still wrote in a very romantic style, and these two pieces, chosen from two of his setsof Quattro Rispetti show how attractive that writing could be.

With the exception of Verdi’s Pietà Signor, begging the Lord for forgiveness for us all, andwritten towards the very end of Verdi’s life, all the songs deal with love. They range insubject from the generic love experienced by the general populace, to the intense, nocturnal, passionate love that makes you wish that the day would never come. Betrayed love, secretivelove, initial love, and crazy love, all are subjects of this wonderful repertoire.

Our thanks for this project go to our generous sponsors – Rolex Italia, the Mirolli family ofCastiglione della Pescaia and the Nando Peretti Foundation – and our thanks, too, for theiron-going faith in the work that we do; to Richard Bonynge who lent his inspiration at therecording sessions and gave generously of his time and advice, as well as helping me in thepreparation of the singers beforehand; and to Pepi Ferrari for keeping us on the straight andnarrow with the language, as well as her very poetic yet precise translations of the poetry.

My thanks also go to all the singers who came to London and gave their time to be part ofthis project, having benefitted from their sojourn at the Accademia and their work with ourother core staff, Maestro Speca and Corradina Caporello; and last and never least, my thanksto our CEO, Candice Wood, who founded this project with me, and who coordinates all ofits aspects, bringing these ideas to fruition.

Oh crescent of a waning moon, you that shine on the deserted waters,Oh silver crescent, what harvest of dreams wavers in your pale glow down here!

Short breaths of leaves, of flowers, from the woods exhale to the sea:No song, no cry, no sound through the vast silence goes…

Oppressed by love, by pleasure, the crowd of the living falls asleep…Oh waning crescent, what harvest of dreams wavers in your pale glow down here.

Wandering moon, you that shower in silver these shores and bloomsAnd inspire the elements with the language of love,Witness are you alone of my fervent desire;

And to herwho charms me, recount my heaving heart and sighs. Do tell her that separation cannot soothe my heart,And if I nourish some hope, it is only for the future.

Do tell her that day and night I count the hours of sorrowAnd an enticing hope brings me comfort in my love.

When I saw you appear at that corner I compared you to the sphere of the sun.I lowered my eyes and found no words: then it was the beginning of our love. Now that our love has begun,

Do show me some affection, you kind young man.

Dawn parts shadows from light….And my pleasure from my desire.Oh sweet stars, it is time to die.

A more divine love from the sky clears you away….

Passionate eyes, oh you sad stars of no return,Fade away uncorrupted!...

Die I must. I don’t want to see the day,For love of my dream and of the night.

Enclose me, oh night in your motherly womb,While the land is pale in diffused light…But let from my blood rise the dawn…And from my brief dream the eternal sun.

As a spouse I am despised, as a faithful wife I am insulted,Heavens, whatever did I do?

Still he is my heart, my spouse, my love, my hope.

I love him, yet he is unfaithful,I have hopes yet he is cruel,Will you let me die?

Oh God, courage and perseverance fail me.

Oh!

Oh! Bel sole d’Anacapri, o sole dolceO fichi d’India addormentati! O campanelle della sera!

Rose selvaggie! O bel mare lontano!Oggi io ripenso la vostra vaga malinconia. Ah….Oh! Bel sole d’Anacapri, io ti porto nel cor!...

Oh beautiful sun of Anacapri, gentle and sad over the inclines of the olive trees;Light bells in the evening, houses as white as snow,

I carry you in my heart! And I think of you with sad yearning.Oh beautiful slopes, a-blooming with wild roses.

Oh, how your soft charm and vague sadness fascinate me!Oh beautiful sun of Anacapri, oh sun so gentle,

Oh Indian figs deeply asleep! Oh light bells in the evening!Wild roses! Oh beautiful sea in the distance!

Today I think again of your vague sadness. Ah!… Oh beautiful sun of Anacapri, I carry you in my heart!

Funesta donna ,

dall’avel risorta per mio supplizioun’altra volta ancora promettesti vedermi…

e in rio momento.Ah!

It was a false warning….Still, of Ausena this is the narrow valley… And here a fatal stay was predicted to me by the secret voice that has been troubling for many nights my rest.

You, whom I do not dare to name. You! Woeful woman, from the grave risen. For my torture one more time you promised to see me…..

And in a dire moment. Ah, who moans?...I’m deceived: it’s the waves, it’s the wind.It’s the night which to me brings its ghosts, its fears;

It’s the night which makes me hear the punishing words of remorse.

STORNELLO G. Verdi

1869 sung by Eva Fiechter

You say that you don’t love me, I don’t love you either. You say you have no affection for me, I have none for you.You say that to another fish you have thrown your hook,

I, too, in another garden pick a rose. Also about this I want us to agree: You do what suits you, I what I want.

I have my freedom, everyone is a master.I am obliging to all…but a servant to no one.

Constancy in love is folly;Fickle I am, and proud of it.

I quiver no more when meeting you in the street,Nor, when you are away, I melt into tears.

As a nightingale that fled the cageAll night and day I make merry and sing.

Lasciami! Lascia ch’io respiri, lasciach’io mi sollevi! Ho il gelo nelle vene.

Ho tremato.

Tutta l’erba s’insanguina d’amore.

Leave me! Let me breathe, let me rise!I have ice in my veins. I have trembled.I have in my heart a vague distress….

Alas, Lord, it is daylight!...The day is coming!

Let me not see it!Press your mouth on my eyes, your heart on my heart!

All the grass is bleeding with love…Life ebbs away, when overwhelming.

Transfixed I die, but not by your sword.I feel my heart empty, and without damage.

Is it not blood?Ah, Lord, it’s the dew!

Dawn cries over me all its tears.

LASCIAMI P. Tosti

No.1 of Quattro Canzoni d’Amaranta sung by Eleonora Vindau

Page 40: “My life is the clearest proof that if you have talent, aria, which has become a staple of song recitals, thanks to its intrinsic beauty: Sposa, son disprezzata , sung by the villaness

Salta, salta, gira, gira, ogni coppia a cerchio va,già s’avanza, si ritira, e all’assalto tornerà.

Serra, serra colla bionda, colla bruna va qua e là,colla rosa va a seconda, colla smorta fermo sta.

Mamma mia,…etc.

Already the moon is in the middle of the sea, oh mother, we will dance. The time is fine for dancing, whoever is in love will be there:Quickly dancing round and round, women mine, do come here,A young man fine and merry will fall to each one of you.As long as in the sky sparkles a star, and the moon shines,The finest boy with the prettiest girl all night will dance.

Oh mother, already the moon is in the middle of the sea…La..la…ra…

Skip, skip, turn, turn, every couple round and round goes,Already steps forward, and backwards, and forward will come again.Tight tight with the blonde, with the dark one step here and there,With the red-head move well, with the pale girl stay still.

Up with dancing round and round, I am a king, I am a pasha,It’s the best pleasure, the greatest delight in the world.
