Celebrating Christmas in Kitui, Kenya

With Christmas approaching, the Muuwo Self Help Group are getting ready to celebrate. They are planning to slaughter a goat, prepare some special dishes from their drought-tolerant crops, and spend the day together at their group farm.

They are thankful for all the help they have received from Farm Africa this year and are inviting the project team, as well as some local government officials, to their celebrations to say “asante” – thank you in Swahili. And they will be entertaining them with dancing and singing whilst they enjoy the feast.

MUUWO SELF HELP GROUPKITUI, KENYADECEMBER 2013

2013 has been a year to remember for members of the Muuwo Self Help Group. David, pictured above with his extended family, is just one of the farmers who is proud to now be able to provide his family with three nutritious meals each day. Thanks to the training and seeds that he received from Farm Africa, David is now growing more food than ever before, and even has a surplus to sell. The additional income has helped him educate all his children. In the past, all the family’s money was spent on food as they couldn’t grow enough to eat, which made paying school costs an ongoing struggle.

And this is a story which is echoed by the rest of the group members. The early 2013 rains were sufficient for the farmers who planted drought-tolerant crops to have a good harvest, so every group member is now able to feed their family three times a day.

And now they have a surplus to sell, Farm Africa has been teaching them about farming as a business and helping them find good markets for their crops.

Members have also been continuing to work on their group farm, on which they grow a variety of vegetables to share between them.

David and the other members of the Muuwo Self Help Group are delighted with the help they have received this year, and are excitedly looking forward to more successes in 2014. David told us: “I feel very privileged to be part of the project.”
