They say Valentine’s Day is the day for lovers. At the WhizzKids United Health Academy it was also the day to celebrate the youth that help us to fight against HIV & AIDS in Eden-dale. On what felt like the hottest day of the sum-mer so far, WhizzKids United celebrated with a Valentine’s Dance. This event was more than just a disco, it was a day full of activities in which all the children who attend the Health Academy could participate and enjoy. To begin the afternoon, we had a performance from the Girls Traditional Zulu Choir. These young ladies sang with much feeling and had everyone in the spirit of unity with their inspirational songs. The crowd was then treated to some local talent by the Hip Hop group Spar10z. This group consisting of four very gifted danc-ers from Pietermaritzburg had both children and adults excited with their krumping and ac-robatic moves. After some refreshments, the leaders of the Mixed Gender League took on WhizzKids United staff in a thrilling football match. After a 1-1 draw at full time, the young-sters secured the victory over the staff in a penalty shootout.

The day came to a close with the sun setting upon lots of smiling faces. Val-entine’s Day at the Health Academy was a huge success. We can only hope that when we celebrate the holi-day next year there will be new children and students in attendance to make the event even more special. The WhizzKids United Heath Academy is an adolescent-focused health centre that offers the best in HIV counselling and treatment, management of sexual-ly transmitted infections, antiretroviral treatment and youth guidance. Further-more, the Health Academy also pro-vides many after-school resources for the youth such as homework clubs or computer classes.

Group Discussions : How can we make Edendale Hospital look like a hospital? How can we achieve the out-come 2 – Increase Life expectancy.

Dr OG Ojo - Senior Medical Manager - The Strategic Planning facilitator

Amongst the 22 facilities in KZN that were

assessed and reassessed in September 2011 and

February 2012, only 15 health care institutions

achieved and maintained their MBFHI status,

Edendale Hospital is one of them.. This was con-

ferred at Mbongolwana Hospital on the 23 March

2012.

The Mother Baby Friendly status is not just about

attaining another award but is aimed at improving

child survival.

Therefore we congratulate Edendale Hospital

Team for such an achievement

"Women themselves have the right to live in dignity, in free-dom from want and freedom from fear. On this International Women's Day, let us rededicate ourselves to making that a reali-ty." (Kofi Annan, 2005) Each year on 8 March 2012, Interna-tional Women's Day is observed. Eve-rywhere around the world people show their appreciation towards the female members of our societies. WhizzKids United celebrated Interna-tional Women's Day at the Health Academy with an All Girls football tournament. The event was opened by Busisiwe Madondo (Clinical Manager at the Health Academy), who spoke the tra-ditional prayer and gave a short speech to the guests. Then all the players got ready for the reason why they came together - a football tour-nament for girls only. In most parts of the world, football has the reputation of being a sport for males only. Since the beginning of WhizzKids Unit-ed ,boys and girls have always played football together to overcome this ste-reotype. And the matches showed im-pressively that football is for girls as much as it is for boys. The girls showed a tremendous amount of pas-sion and engagement during the matches, they ran and fought and everyone wanted the victory.

It was especially nice to see how they were supported by all the boys who had come to the Health Acade-my to cheer for their female class-mates. Between the games, Neli Mkhize (Life Orientation Teacher at Mthetho-musha Primary School) gave a very inspiring and motivational speech, in which she addressed the importance of emancipated women in society and the Hip Hop group Spar10z per-formed one of their amazing dance routines, which made all the girls go crazy. After six thrilling matches, the team Banyana Banyana - just like the South African Women's national team - could secure the trophy for them. But all the players on that day were winners; they helped WhizzKids United to promote gender equality and fight discrimination. For their special role on the day and rep-resenting all women of the society, all the players received a medal and a red rose. Help us to fight for gender equality and empower women to be a vital part in society every day. A special thank you goes to The An-tique Rose ([email protected]) from Hilton, Pietermaritzburg for do-nating the roses, which were given to all the guests and players. Article by: WhizzKids United

“There are numbers of souls who go through life doing a lot of things to make life better for everyone especially for the pa-tients and society at large. There are those that labour in the arena without fanfare ore-cognition. But let them die. They suddenly became some of the greatest people to walk the face of the earth. That is the reason long service is appreci-ated by the Department” Mr M L Sikhakhane quoted.

Mr ML Sikhakhane Chairperson of the Hospital Board said “Nurse profes-sionals render important service to the community”.
