June 24: Birth of John the Baptist

The Gospel story of John’s conception and birth, which is the Biblical basis of this feast, is found in Luke 1. We read that John’s father, Zechariah, was a priest “of the division of Abijah” (Lk 1:4). According to the custom of the day, priests were enrolled in various groupings or divisions which took turns serving in the temple for two weeks at a time. The Gospel says that, while Zechariah was offering incense in the temple, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him and announced that Elizabeth, Zechariah’s wife would bear him a son who was to be named John.

The Angel tells Zechariah that his son would go before the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah, to ‘turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Lk 1:17).

In this promise we find an echo of the following prophecy from the Book of Malachi, the last of the Old Testament prophetic books. “Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the

children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse” (Mal 4:5-6). In some arrangements of the Bible, these are the lasts words of the Old Testament, pointing it forward to the Messianic Age to come.

Believing Jews held that Elijah would come to prepare the way for the Messiah, many saw John as “Elijah,” the fulfillment of that prophecy, foretelling to all the coming of Christ. As the Lord Himself said about John, “If you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come” (Mt. 11:14).

Wednesday is a Solemn Holyday. The liturgy will be celebrated outdoors at the St. John Paul II Chapel at 7:00 p.m. Unless it’s muddy, please feel free to park

in the pavilion area. You can bring your own chair or grab one from the storage area on your way down. (This liturgy will not be on YouTube.)

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail.

We had over eighty people in attendance last Saturday and close to one hundred on

Sunday. It is evident that folks are getting more comfortable in their return to church. All

the options made available have been utilized.

· In the church proper where every other pew is roped off and distancing is maintained. (To date there have been no crowding issues. This is monitored by the ushers.)

· In cars by tuning in to 104.3 FM (with Communion available outdoors) · In the air-conditioned hall via closed circuit TV on a big screen (with Communion

available outdoors or indoors) · In front of the church utilizing the outdoor speakers (many took advantage of that last

weekend with the cool temps). Bring your own chair or grab one of ours. (Communion outdoors or indoors)

Each person receives Communion on their own stainless steel spoon provided by the church (which is then purified and cleaned for future use). The outdoor Eucharist is distributed by a deacon wearing a mask. In the event of rain, Communion will be distributed beneath the overhang. If rain is in the forecast those opting for that location should bring an umbrella. The church is sanitized following each service. Both weekend liturgies are being live streamed on YouTube (via stjoebyz.com) and archived in the event you wish to watch at a time other than 4:00 and 10:00. (Many thanks to the dedicated film crew.) Once again, moving forward let’s be FAITH DRIVEN and EUCHARISTIC CENTERED, not fear based!

Volunteer Help Needed—

Outside…

We recently had a used riding mower donated to the parish. The plans are to utilize it in the pavilion area. Presently

we have two volunteers alternating on the job (it usually needs cutting every two weeks) using one mower. The second mower would cut the time it takes to cut in half. We could use two more volunteers so there would be two teams of two. Please contact Father if you are able to assist. (The task can be done during the day or early evening.)

And Inside... The two ladies from the outside who were getting paid to clean the church each week have “retired” from that position. We are looking for volunteers (maybe three teams of two, similar to our grass cutting

set-up) to assume this duty, which will take about two hours. Please contact Father if you are able to help. We ran into this situation once before and there was a good response.

Gatherings Beginning Again Rentals of our Party Center and Activity Center are resuming in accord with the guidelines of the State of Ohio. The first New Orleans Party Center rental since the Pandemic will be a wedding reception on July 4. In the Activity Center our first rental will be June 28.

Bar Renovation Complete The renovation to our bar is complete. Most of the cost was paid for with the proceeds from the Super Garage Sale held last year. The parish picked up a portion of the remaining balance with an assist from the Men’s Club.

The Science of Fatherhood By Soren Johnson

Here’s a message you don’t hear too often: As a father, you really matter. You are needed at home and in the wider world to do things any a dad can do. You can make all the difference in the lives of your children no matter their age. Though common sense to many, these simple principles are often lost in our culture.

But the truth is coming out in the best studies in psychology, social science and family dynamics. The bottom line is that a father is vital to the health and welfare of his children and the family. Mothers, of course, are indispensable and often take a larger share of child and home care. Yet due to distinctive differences in the ways mothers an fathers interact with their children, families thrive when a mom and a dad work together. Go to Mass with your wife and children, pray together regularly at home read the Sunday Gospel as a family the evening before Mass. The most powerful witness of faith that your children experience may very well be your own. So tell them what your Catholic faith means to you and the

times when God has touched your life. The ultimate role of a father is to help his children get to heaven. The benefits are eternal and the journey starts today.
