PRINCIPAL’S P.S. Back in September, in the midst of running errands, I saw the first holiday displays of the season. It struck me odd that stores would push the holiday season upon its shoppers so early; being quick to judge, I figured that this was yet another corporate ploy to separate people from their hard-earned money sooner rather than later. Now that the holiday season is, indeed, upon us all, it makes sense to me to see holiday decorations and stores filled almost to bursting. The money that I’ve so carefully saved for gift buying is now rapidly vanishing, and my closet is filled with packages ready to be distributed to friends and family. But that’s ok . . . it’s December, not September. What doesn’t make sense to me, though, is how quickly time goes. It seems like my first sightings of Santa happened last week, not three months ago. The same is true with how quickly this school year is going. So much has taken place since September: the first marking period is over; students are well entrenched in their studies; some seniors have already received college acceptance letters. The list is endless. I hesitate saying that the older I get the faster time goes, but I just can’t help myself. I know I’m not alone with this feeling. Students I speak to (especially the seniors) always remark that they can’t believe how quickly their high school years go by. I’ve been in education long enough to see some of the students I knew as kindergartners now walking the halls as seniors! I can only imagine how quickly that same amount of time has passed for their parents. In this season of giving, I wish I could give everyone the gift that is so precious to me: the gift of time. However, time is not something bought nor is it something easily attainable. It is, rather, a fleeting moment of space, carved out for each and every one of us to do with what we will. We ourselves are responsible to make our own time. Even knowing this, sometimes I forget how precious time is and, inadvertently, take it for granted. I must remember to use my time wisely so that I never experience the regret that so often accompanies one of the saddest phrases I know: “If only I had taken the time to . . . “ Now is the perfect opportunity for me to wish you the joys of the season, a season filled with time to spend with those you love. Take time to enjoy yourself. Take time to do something you want to do. Take time to do nothing, if that’s what makes you happy. Time well spent won’t cost you a dime and just might be the perfect gift for you and those you love. Happy Holidays from my family to yours. Ms. Terri M. King, Ms. Terri M. King, Principal P.S. This month’s character trait is integrity. “Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn’t blow in the wind or change with the weather. It is your inner image of yourself and if you look in there and see a man who won’t cheat, then you know he never will.”
