Rules for the “Speed Dating”

Objectives: Speed dating is a dating method that has hitherto proven successful. With today’s speed dating event we hope to meet the following objectives of the Social Platform:

Clearinghouse. To act as clearinghouse facilitating the matching of demand and the supply of staff´s time for social services.

Knowledge-sharing. To facilitate the exchange of ideas, experiences and challenges among those members actively involved in social activities.

Instructions:

1. Should you be representing an organisation, please check out the seating plan at the entrance and join your desk.

2. Should you be a participant at the jamboree (“visitor”), please make sure you have received the booklet introducing the different organisations that are represented here this afternoon. Please take time to go through it to decide which organisation you would like to meet. Please include more than 3 in your list in case the maximum number of participants at each desk has been reached because of very high demand.

3. The location of desks is displayed at the entrance of the room and in the booklet introducing the various organisations occupying a desk at the speed dating.

4. A bell will ring after 15 minutes to signal the end of the round. The association representatives will remain seated, while the “visitors” will move to their next table/NGO.

5. The break between 2 rounds will last 5 minutes to allow rotation and give time to the daters to take a few notes.

6. Please head to next table (organisation) as soon as possible in order not to delay the event.

Start time: 17:00 End time: 18:00 Duration: 1h => 5’ introduction + 3 rounds of 15’with 2 breaks of 5’

Little Plus / Toutes à l’école Luxembourg

Website: www.littleplus.org Address: 24, rue Schmitz L- Kopstal Email: [email protected] Establishment date: 23/11/2010 Represented by: Name: Wagnon Virginie Email: [email protected] Sector: Education

Target beneficiaries: Children, Teenagers

Target country: Cambodia Project : The association Little Plus / Toutes à l’école Luxembourg aims to help provide education for children in need around the world and their families, by all legal means. The association operates in support of and in collaboration with the French association “Toutes à l’école”. In July 2012, Little Plus became “Toutes à l’école Luxembourg”.

The association is seeking to develop, in Cambodia, a high level of schooling for disadvantaged girls, enabling them to become free women and educated mothers. The creation of "Toutes à l’école" started with the following observation: out of all children who are already at school worldwide, only a third are girls. Located 12km from Phnom Penh, the school Happy Chandara that we support was launched in 2005 and aims to train women for reflection the decision-making positions of tomorrow: some become doctors,

teachers, judges, entrepreneurs... Others will undertake vocational training and will be supported until they get a job that gives them freedom and dignity. Achievements: The school “Happy Chandara” hosts as of today 645 students and will have more than a thousand students once the graduating class has opened. 100 new girls enter the school each year. They attend school from primary school level and will be supported until the end of their studies and to their first job. Little Plus/Toutes à l’école has done fundraising for specific projects such as “Health and prevention at Happy Chandara” to enable the students at the school to have medical care, to improve the quality of the health service offered and to develop health and sex education. Association du Calao

Website: www.calao-africa.org Address: 74, route de Luxembourg L-7240 Bereldange Email: [email protected] Establishment date: 2004 Represented by: Name: Decelle Sophie Email: [email protected] Sector: Animal, Education and Research &

Environment, Target beneficiaries: All

Target regions: West and East Africa Project : « Education = Conservation » est notre slogan.

Target beneficiaries: Children, Teenagers, Young (16-25 years),

Target regions: Africa Project : The IDAY network acts to defend the right to a quality basic education of all African children. IDAY acts mainly through the empowerment of organisation of the African civil society and advocacy campaigns whose specific goals are decided by national coalitions. In addition, IDAY has 4 multinational projects: 1) Stopping malaria with Artemisia annua (a highly effective Chinese plant and improving nutrition in schools by creating school gardens : projects are underway in DCR, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Kenya but are ready to be started in any of the other 18 IDAY-member countries. 2) The legal recognition and alphabetization of domestic workers: this project is running in 6 East and Central African countries with training centres existing in Burundi, Rwanda and DRC. The project aims to: get workers aged less than 14 back to school, provide functional literacy and professional training to illiterate young workers and guarantee them the same rights as those provided for other categories of workers. 3) Provide proper education to children in prison: starting in Cameroon and Kivu but expandable to all other members; 4) Enhance education in post-

conflict areas (in preparation). Many other individual projects promoted by IDAY members are published on our Project Bank (www.iday.org) including the training of youngsters with disabilities, low-cost renovation of private schools, equipping school kitchens with energy-saving stoves. Achievements: Despite its young age (5 years), IDAY has achieved several goals: The anti-malaria project is now protecting more than 40 000 children and their academic results have significantly improved; Kenyatta University has signed with IDAY a memorandum of understanding to conduct a 5-year research programme on the medical, agricultural and social impact of Artemisia annua in schools. IDAY has put on the map the whole issue of legalising and educating African domestic workers, training more than 1000 youngsters and thanks to IDAY’s human rights campaigns, the Burundian government is currently discussing a law that will recognize domestic workers in the same way as any other professionals. Surveys to measure the number of illiterate domestic workers and jailed children deprived of education are under preparation together with UNICEF and Defence for Children International (DCI). Finally, discussions are underway with the Ministry of Education of Burkina Faso to conduct a general survey of the quality of education in the country. Skills needed: Fundraising

Target beneficiaries: Children

Target country: Bosnia Project : The Therapeutic and Leisure Centre “Land of friendship and Peace” in Kakrinje. The centre combines a holiday/leisure centre with pony-riding. Such activity has a ludic value for the handicapped children, but is also of pedagogic and therapeutic importance, and teaches them how to strengthen their social skills and learn how to interact with others. The centre can host up to 100 children, priority being given to orphans or war victims. Achievements: OdB has been involved in a number of activities to support orphan children affected by the events in Bosnia, and, more generally, to promote a new understanding between the peoples of Bosnia.

Scholarship programme: (now discontinued) Some 30 children received financial support to pursue their studies (elementary, secondary and university level). This programme operated in close cooperation with

18

“Obrazovanje gradi BiH”, a local Bosnian association. Vacation programme: Young orphans from Bosnia spend several summer weeks a year in Luxembourg, where they are hosted by local families. Needless to say, the children greatly enjoy these vacations in a new and trouble-free environment. But it is also clear that such stays are fairly costly. It may be more efficient to have the children spend more of their holidays outside of Sarajevo, rather than flying them to Luxembourg for a few weeks in the summer, and leaving them confined to much more rudimentary conditions for the rest of the year.
