Presentation Notes
For this 20min session, I will talk about the new system, its implementation plan, the tentative implementation schedule and most importantly, some important key dates which you should remember.
As you may know, eLearning is not mandatory at the University. Teachers have the right to decide whether they want to set up a course website, and where the want to set up their course website to support their teaching at the University. They can choose to use either WebCT, Moodle or CUForum depending on their own teaching preferences. For some faculties or program, they might decide at the faculty/program level that they want all their teachers to teach using the same platform. (E.g. Faculty of Law. E.g. Medicine) -----------------------------------------------
Usage of Platforms and Tools • In year 2010-2011, more than 3800 course sections use
WebCT, Moodle
Presenter
Presentation Notes
If we looks at the figures, in 2010-2011, we have more than 3800 course sections using WebCT and Moodle for course teaching.
• Suggestions that CUHK should have a single University-wide eLearning system
• WebCT would become obsolete in January 2013 and no vendor support would be available by then.
• It is also expected that the demand for eLearning will increase under the 4-year curriculum commencing in 2012.
Background of the Review
Presenter
Presentation Notes
However, the use of the 3 systems causes great confusion to students. Some of them might have to learn to use all three if teachers of major studies use Moodle, minor studies use CUForum and general education use WebCT. There are suggestions that CUHK should have a single University-wide eLearning system. In addition, as WebCT will be phased out and obsolete in Jan 2013 and may be replaced by Blackboard, a new system will be needed for existing WebCT users. Furthermore, it is expected that the demand for eLearning will be increased for the four-year curriculum which starts in 2012. Therefore, the University conducted a eLearning System review in 2010
• Thus, as noted in 1st (2009-10) Academic IT Steering Committee (AITSC) meeting, a task force was formed to review the eLearning platforms and to make recommendation to the Committee. ITSC is requested to convene the task force.

Official Kickoff of the Implementation Project
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The project goal is to set up a new eLearning System which can support teaching and learning activities of the whole University. The new features in the new eLearning System will improve the teaching and learning experience of teachers and students at CUHK. More importantly, teachers and students will benefit from the consistency in teaching and learning experience brought by the new unified system after all users have been migrated to the new system. In a 2-year time frame, the project team will also assist current users of existing eLearning platforms (WebCT, Moodle) and CUForum to migrate to the new system.
Implementation Timeline (Tentative)
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The new eLearning system will be in production by August 2012 and it will gradually replace the existing eLearning platforms (WebCT, Moodle) and CUForum to support teaching and learning at the University. According to the recently updated tentative schedule, users of WebCT are recommended to switch to the new system by August 2012. Users of Moodle and CUForum are recommended to switch to the new system no later than August 2013.
Key Dates
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The project team is now organizing meetings with faculty deans and associate deans of education with each faculty to introduce to them the new system and the implementation plan. Most importantly, we would like to work out with them how the eLearning team can help prepare their teachers for the migration. For each faculty, we suggest organizing a follow-up seminar to introduce the new system and the implementation plan to all teachers at their faculties.
The Preview • A chance for members of
CUHK to preview the system as Student

Presentation Notes
The Pilots Teachers have 2 chances to try using the new system for real teaching in academic year 2011-12 before the system is launched in AUG2012. The 2 chances are the Spring Pilot and the Summer Pilot. The Spring Pilot will run on a temporary system with limited computing power (BbPilot.cuhk.edu.hk). The Pilot is therefore given priority to current WebCT users. Pilot users are selected based on their current usage of eLearning platforms and tools at the University.
The Pilots • Tentative schedule of the
hands-on training workshop organized for the Spring Pilot:
• Nov 22 (Tue) PM Nov 25 (Fri) PM Nov 29 (Tue) PM Dec 2 (Fri) PM Topic: Blackboard Learn: Mastering the Basics Duration: 2 hours

Departmental Liaison Persons for the implementation project • Help us to promote the new eLearning System to
your colleagues! • The departmental liaison persons will also be
guaranteed opportunities to join the Summer Pilot.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The project team is calling all interested teachers and teaching support staff to volunteer to be our departmental liaison persons for the new eLearning System implementation project. Their role is very close to our current eLearning Liaison Person (eLLPs) but this group of liaison persons focus on the eLearning System implementation project. On one hand, they will be the contact person if their colleagues in their department/program would like to learn more about the new system. On the other hand, they will also be the key persons who the project team will consult for comments/suggestions they have for the new system during its implementation. The departmental liaison persons will also be guaranteed opportunities to join the Summer Pilot. Register through this URL if you are interested.
