“I Have a Dream” On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington, D.C. They came to peacefully advocate for equality and jobs for African Americans. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech that day in which he described his dream for America. His opening remarks—“I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation”— turned out to be true.
