“I am subject I know best” Frida Kahlo de Rivera is an internationally popular artist, born in Coyoacan, Mexico, in 1907. Her work is vibrant and colorful, reflecting both the intense pain and passion of her life along with the colors and forms of Mexican folk art. She is especially championed by feminists for her uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Frida had a difficult childhood, surviving first polio at 6 and then a serious bus accident at 18. During her lengthy convalescence she discovered her love for painting. At 22, Frida married the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Their stormy relationship survived many challenges including infidelity, divorce, remarriage and health issues. Frida once said: “I suffered two grave accidents in my life … one in which a streetcar knocked me down and the other was Diego.” Their passionate relationship undoubtedly inluenced the more than 200 paintings, drawings and sketches she produced during her lifetime. She is perhaps best known for her 55 self-portraits, painted “because I am the subject I know best.” More than 60 years after her death, Kahlo’s work continues to grow in popularity and fetch millions at auction. “I am the subject I know best” Frida Kahlo de Rivera is an internationally popular artist, born in Coyoacan, Mexico, in 1907.
