Metal detectors work by transmitting anelectromagnetic field from the search coil into theground. Any metal objects (targets) within theelectromagnetic field will become energised andretransmit an electromagnetic field of their own.The detector’s search coil receives theretransmitted field and alerts the user byproducing a target response. Minelab metaldetectors are capable of discriminating betweendifferent target types and can be set to ignoreunwanted targets.
1. Battery The battery provides power to thedetector.
2. Control Box The control box contains thedetector’s electronics. This is where thetransmit signal is generated and the receivesignal is processed and converted into a targetresponse.
3. Search Coil The detector’s search coiltransmits the electromagnetic field into theground and receives the returnelectromagnetic field from a target.
4. Transmit Electromagnetic Field (visualrepresentation only - blue) The transmitelectromagnetic field energises targets toenable them to be detected.
5. Target A target is any metal object that canbe detected by a metal detector. In thisexample, the detected target is treasure, whichis a good (accepted) target.
6. Unwanted Target Unwanted targets aregenerally ferrous (attracted to a magnet), suchas nails, but can also be non-ferrous, such asbottle tops. If the metal detector is set to rejectunwanted targets then a target response willnot be produced for those targets.
7. Receive Electromagnetic Field (visualrepresentation only - yellow) The receiveelectromagnetic field is generated fromenergized targets and is received by the searchcoil.
Target Response (visual representation only -green) When a good (accepted) target is detectedthe metal detector will produce an audibleresponse, such as a beep or change in tone. ManyMinelab detectors also provide a visual display oftarget information.
