    Pastor’s Message Continued

Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24) Thankfully moving and starting a new job is a lot easier than death! And I have full faith that God will continue to use us (Annie and me, and Elk River Lutheran Church) to bear fruit for the Kingdom of God. Peace, Pastor Nathan Mugaas

    O give thanks

to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.

From the Council President Newly called Pastor Nathan begins his role with ERLC on Monday, Oct 3, and will lead worship for the first time on Sunday, October 9 at 8:15 and 10:30am—spread the news and be part of this exciting time in the life of our congregation!

Pastor Nathan and his family (Annie and their two young sons) pack-up their belongings from their home in Minot into the moving truck on Sept 29 and move to their home in Elk River on Sept 30. The moving truck may not arrive in a timely manner, so it is possible that they may be living out of their suitcases for a while. As we begin our time with Pastor Nathan, please understand that he may be a little distracted until their belongings arrive in Elk River and they get unpacked and organized. In recent conversation with Pastor Nathan, he has told me that he is looking forward to getting to know us, getting to know our community, and excited to begin his work as our Pastor.

ERLC Council September 2016 Meeting Highlights:

    • Reviewed and approved Finance Report for August 2016. (Thank you for your generous giving!)

    • Approved Facilities Team request for capital fund expenditure for stucco repair on the west side of ERLC building.

    • Approved Hospitality expenditures for tables. • First review of proposed by-laws—second review to occur in

October with presentation of these by-laws to congregation in November.

    • Presentation by Worship & Music Team Chairperson, Pam Black, on Candle Traditions (included on p. 9 of newsletter).

    • Stewardship update. • Presentation of the layout of the ERLC directory and schedule

for picture taking (Nov 21-28). • Budget planning—Ministry Team initial budgets and wish lists

are due Oct 17. • Pastor Michelene appreciation comments and applause!

Pastor Nathan is working with the Minneapolis Synod Office to plan and schedule his Installation Service. No date has been set as of yet; information will be sent out as soon as possible.

Council Members discussed the inconsistencies related to names of ERLC groups. Moving forward we all will use Team instead of Committee.

Instead of Executive Committee or Executive Council (made up of Pastor, President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer), this group will now be referred to as Council Officers.

The Council Members that work with specific Ministry Teams are called Council Representatives rather than Council Liaisons.

Rally Day and the beginning of Sunday School have been amazing! It is so nice to see both new and familiar faces as we begin our fall ministries here at ERLC. Here are some the events that are coming up for October related to CYF: Our first ever-Family Sunday school will happen on October 9 from 9:30am to 10:20am. All Sunday school children are encouraged to bring family to Sunday school: Mom, Dad, siblings, guardians, cousins, grandparents and anyone else who is special in your life. It will be a wonderful time of ministry together.

On October 12 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, we will be hosting the 363 Sandwich Event. The Confirmation and high school youth will be working with our adult leaders to be the hands and feet of Christ making sandwiches for the homeless in Minneapolis.

On October 16 we will celebrate with our 3rd graders as they receive the gift of a new Bible from our congregation and their families. Who is ready to Trick or Treat? We will host our annual Trunk or Treat event on Friday, October 28, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Everyone in the congregation can be involved in this ministry by decorating a trunk, contributing candy, and/or coming to trunk or treat! It is always fun to see how clever our members are with their trunks and costumes. October 30 will be the celebration of the Affirmation of Baptism (Confirmation) of our high school youth at ERLC. The confirmands will be assisting with worship at both services, but the formal ceremony will be held at the 10:30am service.

  •

Friday,  October  28th      6:00pm  to  8:00pm    In  the  front  parking  lot

Consider decorating a trunk or contributing candy to help make this event a special evening for our children. Candy can be dropped off at Laura’s office; to sign up to decorate a trunk, contact the office or Laura Babneau.

    A tribute to

    Pastor Michelene

Pastor Michelene Verlautz received many well wishes and thank yous from the congregation on Sunday, September 18, 2016, her last Sunday to lead worship at Elk River Lutheran Church. It was a bitter-

    2

sweet day for her, as for all of us, with sad goodbyes, tears, and heartfelt well wishes as she moves forward with possibilities as yet to be realized.

    3

    So again, we say

    thank you, Pastor

    Michelene!

    ERLC Candles 1

Fire has long been a sign of God’s presence in our Christian beliefs and practices. From Moses’ encounter with God in the burning bush through the flames of fire descending upon those receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, fire has been used to represent God’s presence among us. Thus, candles play a significant role in church services and celebrations at Elk River Lutheran church.

There are 4 candles in the chancel area (front) of the sanctuary. The Eternal Flame or Seven-Day candle is the red glass candle that burns on the credence table (small altar table) under the large wall cross. It burns constantly as a reminder of God’s presence in our church and in our lives.

On either end of the altar, flanking the liturgical Bible and its stand are two traditional candles. Together, the Bible and the two candles represent the Trinity. These candles are lit at the beginning of every church service, most often, during the prelude music, and extinguished at the service’s

    2

conclusion either during the last verse of our closing hymn or during the postlude. Generally an acolyte or an usher does this. We encourage reverence and respect at this point in the service.

The larger, tall, floor-standing candle has different names depending upon its use. When it is called the Paschal candle it symbolizes Christ’s triumph over the darkness of sin and death. In view of this, we light this candle either during the Easter Eve vigil service or when the church sanctuary doors are first opened on Easter morning, well before the first worshippers arrive at the start of the first Easter service. It remains lit all that morning and is not extinguished until the last worshipper has left. Throughout the 50 days of Easter, this candle stands near the altar, lit for every service and reminds us of Christ’s resurrection. After the Day of Pentecost, the candle is placed, unlit, close to the baptismal font where it remains for most of the rest of the church year. Now it can be appropriately called the Baptismal candle. For it is lit at the start of the first service on those Sundays we have baptisms, as it is the candle from which the child’s baptismal candle is lit. It remains lit for both services, telling all worshippers we have a baptismal celebration that day. For funerals, the Paschal candle is also lit and stands at the head of the casket or urn. —Worship & Music Team
