In fact, most do-it-yourselfers can attest to it, too. Ford put that idea to the test when engineers used duct tape to help test the aerodynamics of the Mustang. In the data-driven, computer- monitored world of vehicle test- ing, sometimes there is no re- placing the human touch, said Ford spokesman Dan Jones. Ford engineers Jonathan Gesek and Mike Del Zio are proof that both the objective and sub- jective remain integral parts of car development. After driving a high-speed lap at the test track in a prototype Mustang, Del Zio, a vehicle dy- namics engineer (the objective one, Jones said) reported that despite wind tunnel numbers that would indicate otherwise, the car wasn’t responding around corners to his satisfac- tion. Gesek, an aerodynamics engi- neer (the subjective one, said Jones) had a quick solution. Gesek applied a simple strip of duct tape over the lower gap of the grille. The goal was to reduce what is known as front-end lift. Del Zio retested the car, paying attention to the vehicle’s response when cornering at high speed. The result: a better-handling car and a modified grille. “That little strip of tape made all the difference,” Del Zio said. “The key to the subjective is con- fidence. “At the end of a straightaway, what confidence do you have in being able to brake and make a turn? Things start to come up fast at 155 miles an hour.” Two Ford Engineers Used Duct Tape for Research Efforts to boost manufacturing in Michigan moved forward with the opening of a new manufactur- ing innovation facility in Detroit. Two Manufacturing USA insti- tutes – The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Inno- vation (IACMI) (Knoxville, Tenn.), and LIFT- Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (Detroit) – cele- brated Manufacturing Day Oct. 6 by cutting the ribbon on and host- ing an open house at the new IAC- MI/LIFT manufacturing innovation facility in Detroit’s Corktown, said event spokesman Tom Wegehaupt. The event included more than 160 Detroit-area K-12 students participating in hands-on STEM activities, and comments from Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Con- gresswoman Brenda Lawrence, Michigan State University Presi- dent Lou Anna K. Simon, and many other leadership stake- holders for both institutes. The center houses the LIFT headquarters and the IACMI Ve- hicles Scale-Up Facility, the re- search and development hub for the IACMI Vehicles Technology Area. This event capped a near- $50 million investment in world- class manufacturing equipment and improvements to the Cork- town facility, recognizing the future of innovative research in both composites and metals. Following the completion ofsome internal pre-training, MC-CMHmental health clinicians willreceive training, coaching andconsultation support that will al-low them to provide trauma-spe-cific assessment and treatment.The type of trauma experi-

enced and the child’s age or de-velopment stage determines thestructure of CPP sessions. For ex-ample, with infants, the child ispresent but treatment focuses onhelping the parent to understandhow the child’s and parent’s ex-perience may affect the child’sfunctioning and development.Toddlers and preschoolers are

more active participants in treat-ment, which usually includesplay as a vehicle for facilitatingcommunication between thechild and parent.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Twobrothers who formerly owned aPennsylvania defense contractorhave been sentenced to prisonand fined after pleading guilty ina $6 million scheme to over-charge the U.S. Defense Depart-ment for Humvee window kits.Thomas Buckner, 68, was sen-

mind when you think of a pickup.But that’s what American truckbuyers increasingly want, spend-ing an average of $46,844 on apickup, according to Kelley BlueBook.That’s more than the starting

price of luxury SUVs like the Mer-cedes GLC or the Lexus RX. In2016, pickup trucks made up alittle more than a third of all vehi-cles that sold for over $50,000.At the State Fair of Texas this

month, Ford Motor Co. is dis-playing its most expensive pick-up yet: The F-Series Super DutyLimited, a luxury heavy-dutytruck with a starting price of$80,835. It has custom two-toneleather seats, a heated steeringwheel wrapped in hand-stitchedleather and high-tech featureslike a 360-degree camera systemthat guides drivers when they’rehitching up a trailer.A fully-loaded F-450 – the

biggest version of the Super Duty– will top out at $94,455. It’s capa-ble of towing an Air Force F-35fighter plane, but it also has mas-saging seats.Fiat Chrysler’s Ram brand is

also showing luxury pickups atthe fair. The 2018 Laramie Long-horn Southfork edition has a wal-nut-trimmed steering wheel and4G Wi-Fi capability. The HeavyDuty Lone Star Silver, sold onlyin Texas, has a luxurious brightchrome grille. Both start around$50,000 and will be available lat-er this fall.On a recent visit to the fair,

some visitors balked at theprices. One said he’d rather buya Mercedes S-Class if he had$80,000 to spare. But others tookthe high prices in stride.“It’s awesome. I’d love to be

going down the road in it right

now,” said Paul Churchill as hesat in the cab of the Super DutyLimited. “If you’re looking for allthe technology they have inthese trucks now, it’s probablyworth it.”Demand for luxury trucks is

strong. Ford says around half ofthe individual buyers who pur-chase Super Duty trucks opt forone of its three luxury versions –King Ranch, Lariat or Platinum.The Limited version will sit atthe top of that heap.The luxury trend has helped

pickups outpace the industry interms of the prices they com-mand. So far this year, the aver-age vehicle is selling for $34,671,up 38 percent from 2005. The av-erage price of a full-size truckhas jumped 54 percent in thatsame period, to $46,844.Rebecca Lindland, an execu-

tive analyst with Kelley BlueBook, says luxury truck buyerscut across age spans but share amindset. They could buy a Ger-man luxury car, she says, butthey want the blue-collar brawnof an American truck – or, in Toy-ota’s case, a full-size truck builtin Texas.“These are people with money.

These are people who have beenvery successful,” she said. “Allthey want is the most tarted-uppickup they can buy.”Ford kicked off the luxury

truck trend in 1999 when it intro-duced the Harley-Davidson F-Se-ries. The King Ranch edition fol-lowed in 2001. General MotorsCo. brought out its high-end GMCSierra Denali pickup in 2002; theChevrolet Silverado High Coun-try followed in 2014. The RamLaramie Longhorn arrived in2010.Todd Eckert, Ford’s truck

DETROIT (AP) – Stung byfalling U.S. sales, Hyundai ispushing its dealers to modernizethe new-car shopping experi-ence, conceding that customersare well-armed with informationfrom the internet before theystep on the showroom floor.The Korean automaker on Oct.

10 announced that dealers willpost “fair market pricing” ontheir websites that includes com-pany discounts offered to con-sumers. Dealers, which are inde-pendent businesses, will be en-couraged to add incentivesthey’re offering to buyers. They’llalso deliver vehicles to cus-tomers for test drives and allowpeople to do paperwork online,including calculation of monthlypayments, loan applications andestimating the value of theirtrade-ins.“They would rather spend less

time negotiating, filling out formsand refilling out forms for thesecond time,” Dean Evans, thecompany’s chief marketing offi-cer in the U.S., said of car shop-pers. “But they do want to spendmore time getting to know thecar and the features of the car.”Hyundai Motor Co. hopes the

move will boost U.S. sales, whichare down almost 13 percent sofar this year, a far bigger dropthan the overall market’s declineof just under 2 percent. ley said previously that during atest of three SUVs repaired byFord Motor Company, one testedpositive for carbon monoxide.But Manley told The Austin Amer-ican-Statesman hours later thatmore testing revealed alarmsmay have activated for some oth-er reason, meaning his first as-sertions were likely a false alarm.“We do not believe this issue is

a Ford issue or related to the re-pairs they have done,” Manleytold The Statesman. That is con-sistent with Ford, which re-sponded to Manley’s earlier com-ments by defending its repairsand saying it has yet to receive
