DEFENSIVE DRIVING-Glenn Rettmann

Participants receive a thorough review of the “rules of the road”, with an emphasis on defensive driving practices. If you are 55 or older, successful completion of this class will allow you to receive a discount on your auto

CANCELLATION - WEATHER On days school is closed for weather, observed holidays, etc, Community Education classes will not be held.

Please pre-register one week ahead. Unfortunately, some classes are canceled if there is a lack of pre-registration. Late registration will be taken if space is available and the class is being held. You will be notified if a class is canceled due to insufficient enrollment and a refund will be made. Unless you are notified, you should meet at the time and place designated. NELL is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, created to enrich the quality of life in our local communities through lifelong learning and the arts. Our goal is to inspire people to learn, to grow, and to give to their communities. APRIL 5: ROAD TO PONEMAH: The Teachings of Larry Stillday by Michael Meuers

“It’s not about Indians, it’s about People... The overall philosophy is to reconnect all people to nature and inevitably to themselves.” ~Larry Stillday Stillday was a well-known spiritual leader, healer and teacher from Red Lake Nation. He inspired thousands with his teachings about living in harmony, not only with each other, but also with nature. He passed on in May 2014, but his message survives. Meuers has worked in public relations for the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians for more than twenty years. Meuers will discuss his relationship with Stillday and the resulting book and will have copies available for purchase. Location: Gonvick Community Center at 9:30 APRIL 12: Minnesota Gold: Conversations with

Northland Athletes with Packy Mader Patrick has had a lifetime fascination with Minnesota sports, history, and geography. He combined those pursuits with his interest in elite international sporting events to research, interview, and write about fifty-seven living athletes from Minnesota who competed at the highest level. The result is Minnesota Gold, a fact-filled yet inspiring book that spans the years 1948 – present, covering a wide range of sports, both men and women, and represents every geographical part of the state. APRIL 19: Life in Minnesota before Euro-Americans. Dr. Jeremy Nienow

Have you ever been curious about how long people have been living in the area we know today as Minnesota? Join archaeologist Jeremy Nienow for a presentation on what life was like in Minnesota thousands of years before Euro-American colonization. Find out what archaeologists know about past lifeways, religion, identity and culture by broadly examining the artifacts and sites of the period from 10,000 years ago until the 1500s. Location: Faith Lutheran Church Bagley at 9:30

APRIL 26: Tour of Enbridge Pipeline Operations in Clearbrook and northern Minnesota. Enbridge employees will host a bus tour of operations in our region. Preregistration is required by Wednesday April 19. Meet at the Clearbrook Legion Meeting room in the Community Center at 9am. Bus will leave at 9:30. MAY 3: The Conservation Treatment of Fine Art at the Minnesota State Capital. Denis Gardner, MN Historic Preservation National Register Historian & Bob Herskovitz, MNHS Outreach Conservator As part of the restoration of the State Capitol, all of the fine art in the building was evaluated and, as needed, treated to restore and preserve it for future generations. This program will begin with Denis Gardner providing some background and context for the art. Bob Herskovitz, will follow with an illustrated talk describing and showing the process and results. Location: Bagley American Legion at 9:30 MAY 10: Guarding the Resources Exploring Minnesota's Game Warden/Conservation Officer service from its inception in 1887 to the present. The program is based on dates and events that lead from one Game Warden covering the entire state to today's force of 150 Officers. Dennis Huwe was a Game warden/Conservation Officer for 27 years. Curt Nelson was a Game Warden / Conservation Officer for 20 years. Location: McIntosh Community Center at 9:30 MAY 17: Walking Camino de Santiago: Thomas Wynne In 2014 Tom Wynne, retired owner of Thunderbird Graphics and his wife June, retired nurse from Bemidji, made the pilgrimage on the trail in Spain known as the Camino de Santiago. Tom will discuss the history of the Camino, what the Camino offers today and will share some of their experiences. Location: Good Shepherd in Clearbrook at 9:30 JUNE 10: Bus Trip- Nisswa Stamman Festival Tour will include the Nisswa-Stämman Scandinavian Folk Music Festival featuring folk musicians, dancing opportunities, dance instruction, a cultural children's activity tent, and great Scandinavian food. The day ends with a Smörgåsbord supper. The cost of $65, includes bus, tickets, Smörgåsbord. Lunch on your own. The bus leaves Bagley at 8am and returns about 8pm. Reservations required and $65 paid by Wed, May 31st. Checks to NELL and send to NELL TRIP P.O. Box 585, Bagley, MN 55621. Include a phone or email so details can be sent to you prior to the trip. Because tickets are purchased in advance, we cannot give refunds for cancellations made after May 31.
