Cotton Indian Elementary School Newsletter February 2015
A Message From the Principal...
“Community Involved in Education”
Dear CIE Community,
As we wrap up another month of school and continue to move forward, instructional practices and meeting each student’s individual needs will continue to be our top priority. I feel so fortunate to work with a dedicated staff that strives to provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for all students.
On our website is a link for a Parent Survey, please take a moment to complete the survey when you have some time. I value your input and will look closely at your comments and suggestions as we continue our quest to provide an enriching and supportive partnership with our school community.
I appreciate all that you do to support our school, we are a community that takes pride in meeting the needs of all stakeholders.
With warmest regards,
Lisa Travis Principal

Kindergarten is 100 days smarter!! Thank you for all of your donations to help us celebrate the 100th day of school!! As the second half of our school year begins we are really focusing on sight word knowledge, reading, reading comprehension, and number recognition to 20! In order for your child to become a successful reader you need to read with your child…..READ READ READ!! We hope to go on a field trip this spring, look for more information to come in your child’s folder. Thanks for all you do!
First graders are much stronger in our knowledge of 2-D and 3-D shapes and fractions. We have made shapes and shape books, put our hands on shapes, and divided different objects into equal parts. We are excited about this new information! We have also been having number talks each day! We have looked at dots and numbers and are working on adding and subtracting numbers by using all kinds of great strategies. Please ask us which strategies we know and how we can use them! We will be learning about measurement next. So parents, watch out we will be ready to measure everything in sight! We are crazy mathematicians!

Third grade is off to a productive 3rd marking period. In math we are starting to learn area, perimeter, and geometry. Mr. Nelson, our math coach has come in and conducted a great 3 ACT task with students. In Science we have concluded our last unit in Earth science (fossils) and will move on to Physical Science and learn all about Heat. Third graders are really intrigued and fascinated learning and studying the Historical Figures that shaped our democracy. We have covered Paul Revere, Fredrick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. Be sure to ask your son/daughter how each person influenced “their/our” democracy. We have six more people to cover. In reading continue to read both fiction and nonfiction text to build fluency, comprehension, and stamina. GA milestones will be here before you know it. If parents/students are in need of support materials please visit the Ms. Settle’s room (parent support room). Continue to encourage your son/daughter to practice all previously learned skills in all subject areas. Thank you to all our supportive parents and guardians. Without you the success of your child would not be possible.
Second grade would like to start off with a Thank you to all of the parents who showed up at our Museum night! The students worked diligently on their historical figure projects. You should be very proud of them. We are!
In February, second grade will focus on the night sky. Students will learn about the stars and moon. Second graders love this unit! Many awesome experiments and activities will be done within this unit. Also in February, we will study Jackie Robinson and his contributions as a Georgian to history to coincide with Black History Month. In Math, we are completing the amazing world of measurement of length and time. What fun we had doing hands on activities! We also will start a review on place value and push or number knowledge to a new level.
Please encourage your students to collect those box tops for class competition and read to earn six flags tickets!

The fourth graders have been working extremely hard since returning from Winter Break! We are very proud of their efforts as we make a strong push towards the Georgia Milestones in April!
In ELA, the students are working diligently on constructed and extended response questions. This practice will better prepare the students for the Georgia Milestones test because it provides them with ample opportunities answering open ended questions, short answer questions, and extended response questions. A novel on George Washington will be starting soon.
For Social Studies, the students will continue their studies on the Revolutionary War.
In Science, the fourth graders will continue studying light and sound. Be sure to ask your child all about the mini-experiments they are doing in class with the use of light sources, mirrors, and prisms! After the light unit the students will begin a lesson on sound in which they will be able to make their own homemade instruments. They will have the opportunity to play a short tune in class demonstrating how their instrument changes pitch and volume!
Fractions will be the focus in Math. The students will focus on equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, and multiplying fractions. They will also be preparing for the Georgia Milestones by completing constructed response and extended response activities in class.
Please be on the lookout for a permission slip coming home for a field trip. If the funds are available, the students will go on a field trip to the Atlanta History Center on March 5th. If you have not given your $20 donation at the beginning of the year please do so as soon as you can.

With only a fraction of the year remaining, 5th grade will be finishing fractions and heading on to our geometry and measurement units. With the end of the year rolling in quickly, be on the lookout for notifications about special events happening just for your 5th graders. Remember, a well-rested child is a higher achieving child. They’re never too old for some story time before an early bedtime… just let them read it to you.
