Why is literacy important? We strongly believe that literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning and education. It empowers people to reach their full potential and excel in school and beyond.

Unfortunately, there are 750 million people around the world that can't read a single word and another 2 billion struggles to read a sentence. This reality has a negative social and economic impact, such as: – poor health outcomes – welfare dependency – gender inequality – lack of social cohesion – unemployment – increase criminal activities LITERACY IS AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTUREEnhancing literacy levels is essential to the economic development and to the well-being of communities worldwide. Literacy is key to break the cycle of poverty; it leads us to a stronger and healthier community with a more talented workforce.

Meet some of our ambassadors

“I want to sincerely thank the WLF for the opportunity to become a Youth Ambassador. The experience has been something I won’t forget in a hurry. I have learnt new skills in the process, sharpen my advocacy and public speaking skills and as well as research. I want to pledge my undying support for the course of WLF. And be part of all of its activities and programs in the future.”

“Once again, thank you for this amazing opportunity. As a WLF ambassador, I have learned a lot about the issue of illiteracy, advocacy and fundraising methods, and made many networks from around the world”

“After joining the World Literacy Foundation, I was able to learn the models which equipped me with the necessary skills to start growing my dream ideas to reality thus I came up with an idea of raising illiteracy awareness in the area as I literally can’t help seeing my fellow age mates and more so good citizens of the world perishing and losing their rights which obviously can be solved”

“This is my second year being a Youth Ambassador for the World Literacy Foundation. Last year I fundraised in my community and donated prize money from various competitions that I won. This year, I created a textbook drive at my school and spread awareness by talking to parents at various events and putting up posters around my community. I spoke at my school assembly about International Literacy Day and got other kids involved in helping spread the power of literacy”.

“I could recall the day I got my acceptance mail into the WLF Ambassador Program; it was a turning point in my life… I was charged to be responsible not only for myself but for other disadvantaged children who do not have the opportunity that I did while growing up. It is my hope to continue to advocate for increased access to literacy. WLF Ambassador program might be over, but my fight against illiteracy is just starting!”
