All-Ireland Chess ChampionshipFour students represented CCC in the All-Ireland Chess Championship. The team came joint first

but narrowly missed out in a nail biting tie break. Ryan Coombes (Fifth Year), Carlan Ellis (Second Year), Thomas McCarthy (Second Year), Robbie McCarthy (First Year) are already looking forward to competing for the title next year!

Clon CC ladies football team took part in the Ladies Football Blitz in Ahamilla on the 27th March 2012. Farm Talk and Walk 2012

The fifth-year Agricultural Science class attended

a farm talk and walk at Clonakilty Agricultural Col-lege. Students were given demonstrations on the milking machine and further information regarding silage making, sheep handling, soil science and fer-tilisers.

Futsal (Indoor Soccer)The First-year soccer team represented Clon CC

in the Futsal competition back in October 2011. As this was their first outing of the year, they did well to beat Christ The King and Blarney but they lost their opening match to St. Vincent’s, Cork. This meant that they just narrowly missed out on progressing to the next round. Better luck next year girls!

11 students participated in YSI this year and presented their projects in the City Hall, Cork in March. One project, ‘Inequality in Third World Ed-ucation’, undertaken by Darragh McCarthy, Henry

Jennings and Joe White, was selected to be one of the 60 projects from all over Ireland, to present at the National Showcase in Dublin in May. Well done to all participants.

SCIENCE CLUB

Súil Siar 2011-2012Where does the time go? Another year of guidance, preparation and inspiration as we approach state exams 2012. This year’s Graduation class of 2012 reflected back on their six years with us here in the college. Their theme was one of respect - Respect for yourself, Respect for others and Responsi-bility for your actions. This is how we en-deavour to guide those that have been put into our care.

As you can see from this year’s News & Views we are certainly getting there. We are successfully promoting pupils' development Academically, Personally, Socially, Physically, Culturally, Spiritually and Morally. This has been possible through your continuing support as parents, the unstinting goodwill, positivity and genuine care for pupils by a positive staff team and an excellent cohort of pupils.

We celebrate another fantastic year and wish our exam classes every success. We look forward to seeing you all in 2012 -2013.

Rang Phádraig Daffodil Day fund-raising netts €1,277

Rang Phádraig have been involved in raising money for Daffodil Day over the past 6 years. Huge efforts and great enthusiasm are applied to this event by both the staff and pupils of Rang Phádraig.

This year the students held a pizza sale, a rings tournament, a staff raffle and the main event which was a tug-of-war between the pupils and the staff. This was a very popular event with the pupils com-ing out as winners this time. A re-match has been promised for next year!

The sum total of the fund-raising was €1,277.42. The Student Council contributed €250 of this from their fundraising events.

Kevin O’ Dwyer and Eoin O’ Sullivan are both graduating from Rang Phádraig this year. We would like to wish both Eoin and Kevin well in the Leav-ing Cert Applied.

Jack Barry will be sitting his Junior Cert Exam and we would also like to wish him every success.

Live Music Society launch 10th anniversary CDThe Live Music Society is celebrating its 10th anniversary since its foundation in 2002. The students once again will be releasing a school CD of their original music and lyrics.

What makes this year special is that the so-ciety will release a double CD. The second al-bum is a compilation of the best tracks it has had over ten great years of producing music in the college.

Robert McCarthy (Fourth Year) and Seamus Poillot (Fifty Year) have produced and pressed the album this year which is a departure from previous years when it was sent away for pro-duction. Please support.

TY Round-upNEWS

TY OUTDOOR PURSUITS TRIPTransition Year students from Clonakilty Community College went to 'Star Sailing' Out-Doors Activity Centre in Kenmare from 28th-30th April. We all had a great time. We were able to take part in lots of activities such as kayaking, canoeing, mountaineering and archery. Some students on the trip were also able to complete their Gaisce task which was great for them. We stayed in accommodation which was located just 3 minutes walk from Kenmare town.

We learned water skills from qualified instructors and we were shown how to stay safe on the water. I would recommend the trip to everyone as we all had a great time.

by David Daly, TY pupil 2011-12

The Transition Year production this year, Bigger Brother, was a big success.

The play was written by a teacher at Clonakilty Community College, Kieran Doyle. With a very able cast, the play wowed the audience at both

the matinee and evening showings. The Rehearsals

Rehearsals for the play were fre-quent, with after-school practices and in-school practices. When it all came together at the end it was definitely worth it.

“It was a fantastic experience. I loved every minute of it”-Henry Jen-nings The Play

The first showing was in the morn-ing in front of a dozen primary school students in Rossmore. This gave the

crew and cast the opportunity to spot any mistakes. Overall the young au-dience liked the production. At the evening showing everyone concen-trated and got it right. The stage hands were fast and quick and the cast re-membered their lines.

This year five science projects in the school were chosen for the BT Young Scientist Exhibi-tion 2012, the most the school has ever entered. Four of these teams were from TY, the fifth team included a TY team from last year who were awarded 3rd place in their category. They pro-duced a yogurt drink made from seaweed ex-tract.

The students came up with ideas and then re-searched and experimented to gather information and reach conclusions. The students got to exhibit their projects in the RDS in Dublin over a four-day period. Some of the projects entered were (1) a fruit bowl that delays the fruit from going off, (2) a bicy-cle helmet which deflects the wind from blowing in your face, and (3) an experiment to see if there is too much fluorine in tap water.

BT Prize-winners:Congratulations to Declan Moore, Barry Holland

and David Ryan who came second in the Senior Biological & Ecological Category for their project which created a nutritional beverage with enhanced antioxidants.

David O’Mahony was highly commended for his project ‘Road Safety Ear Guards’ in the Technology Category.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS

There were loads of different Student Enter-

prises Companies in TY this year. Produce var-

ied from key rings, to wristbands, to PlayStation

tournaments to Christmas candles.The Student

Enterprise is a great and valuable experience in

Transition Year as it gives students an insight

into what’s involved in running and managing a

business. Students were split up into their own

groups of 4, and they came up with their own

unique idea.Once the products had been made or

ordered, they went on sale to the members of the

public. In January students got to exhibit their

products, and the victorious group got to go to

the student enterprise finals. Student Enterprise

can turn out to be very successful, as although

you have to invest your own money, you can also

keep all the profits!!!

Happy retirement to

our colleagues!Three senior members of staff retired from our college this academic year. Rosemarie O'Neill, teacher of French and History, Assistant Princi-pal and SPHE co-ordinator; Sean Lynch, Con-struction Studies teacher and Assistant Princi-pal, and Val Lynch who, until recently was the only PE teacher in the school. They had a com-bined total of 107 years teaching between them.

We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank them for their enormous contribution to edu-cation at Clonakilty Community College. In addi-tion, we pay tribute to their wise and warm sense of

Credit Union debating champions!Clonakilty Community College won the West Cork Credit Union Debating competition on May 16th, 2012 at Dunmore House Hotel. The school was represented by Evelyn McSweeney (captain, sixth year), Paul Harte (fourth year), Lucyanne Edmunds (sixth year), Marcus Bate-son (fourth year) and the team was supported by Conor Ryan (fourth year) and Henry Jennings (fourth year), both of whom had debated in pre-vious rounds of the competition.

In the lead up to the final, Clon CC defeated St. Fachtna’s de la Salle, Skibbereen, Mercy Heights, Skibbereen and St. Brogan’s, Bandon. In an exciting and entertaining final, the school team successfully opposed the motion that ‘Competition Is Superior

To Co-operation In Getting Positive Results’ against a team from Sacred Heart Secondary School, Clon-akilty.

The win is a testament to the innate ability, self motivation, commitment and hard work that was put in by Evelyn, Paul, Lucyanne, Marcus, Conor

and Henry throughout the competition, expertly coached by Mary Lowery.

A special thanks to Sinead McCarthy from Clon-akilty Credit Union who organised the debates throughout the year.

As our school year draws to a close we take time to reflect on another busy year in our Leaving Cert Applied programme. Eight stu-dents joined us this year in LCA 1 and the year began with LCA 1 and 2 heading for Oyster Haven, a great day was had by all!

The year was very busy for both groups punctuated with trips to Fitzgerald’s Park for a key assignment in agriculture/horticulture. The trip to the park also combined with their social education programme which included a visit to the Sexual Health Centre. In the last term there was also a trip to Manch, Dunmanway for hor-ticulture.

Throughout the year interviews and task re-ports kept the noses to the grindstone and all visiting examiners were very impressed with our students work. Work experience was very successful this year with glowing reports com-ing back from employers some students ob-taining summer jobs as a result of their work placement. Both groups were visited by guest speakers Mary Walsh, Juvenile Probation Offic-er, spoke to the students during their Social Ed-ucation class and in their Office Administration class they were visited by Kevin McHugh from Youth Connect. Both talks were very informa-tive and the students participated well through their attentiveness and the questions they asked at the end of both talks.

And so to the summer; I hope all our LCA students have a restful and enjoyable break. Ádh-mór to our LCA 2s in their Leaving Cer-tificate exams and their future path in life.

LCA 2011/2012

Andrew Dullea of Ballymacowen, Clonakilty, achieved 550 points in the Leaving Cert 2011. He is a very personable young man with a well-developed social conscience. In Transition Year he played a leading role in fund-raising for HOPE Foundation and visited Kolkata, India. Over the years he has received two Endeavour Awards at Annual Awards Day, a Bronze Gaisce Award, and he has been a mentor to First-Year students. He is studying Radia-tion Therapy at Trinity College, Dublin. • AndrewDullea.

Transition Year students participated in the Build A Bank Challenge as fa-cilitated by AIB. Following a first round of interviews six successful candidates were selected - Niall Mc-Carthy, Bank Manager; Ruadhán Fitzgerald , As-sistant Manager; Conor Ryan and Cianan Zee, Tellers; Jack Murphy, Au-ditor, and Joshua Brad-ley, Sales & Marketing, formed the ‘River Bank’. The team provided ac-count opening and sav-ing facilities for custom-ers and also provided information in relation to banking for students. This was achieved in a number of ways includ-ing representatives from the ‘River Bank’ giving talks to First and Sec-ond year Business Stud-ies classes on banking. The ‘River Bank’ partici-pated in the Regional Final held in City Hall where they displayed their hard work. This stand was again displayed in the local AIB branch.

Milk It Awards 2011/2012Six TY students have this year taken part in the Milk It Awards which is organised by the National Dairy Council.

Niall McCarthy, Ruadhán Fitzgerald, Conor Ryan, Daniel Hurley, Noel O’Sullivan and Jack Murphy submitted a proposal to activate an advertising campaign to promote a dairy product to a teenage target market.

Through much brainstorming, research and of course essential taste tests, the team decided to form ‘The Calcium Crew’ with homemade smoothies as their product.

Following a successful proposal the Calcium Crew progressed to the second round of the competition and received approval from the National Dairy Council to activate their campaign. This involved making a TV adv, a radio adv and host-ing a thoroughly enjoyable Dairy Day for Junior Cycle students.

BASKETBALLUnder14, Under 16 and Senior girls basketball teams have been very successful this year. En-tered in both the VEC Basketball league and Baskeball Ireland league, they performed very well. Under 14 girls battled their way through the Basketball Ireland league to the Cork finals in Neptune Stadium but were unfortunate to lose against St Mary's of Macroom, final score was 38-26.

However the Under 14 and Senior girls both qualified for the VEC basketball final with the former beating Bandon and Beara on very impres-sive scorelines .Well done to all our girls and their coaches for their great efforts this year!
