COLUMN
Mabungahong adlaw LACES!
This is it, my duty as a President of this prestigious club has finally begun,
and it feels like I am also a newly elected public official of this Province of
Davao del Norte, since we started my term by joining the Alay Lakad, the 52nd
Founding Anniversary of Davao del Norte last July 1, 2019 which also coincides
the beginning of my term.
I would like to thank our Honorary Member, Engr. Sabino Logronio for
sponsoring our fellowship breakfast after the Alay Lakad event. And also to all
the gorgeous and dedicated LACES.
Thank you for entrusting me to lead the club. You have already shown
your generosity and support my induction by having a high attendance and in-
dulging my wish to wear pink gown. It was a wish granted for me. Special
thanks to PP Agnes and Spouse Doods Resurreccion for sponsoring the open
bar and the Pereyras family for the abundant desserts.
Lastly, a grateful heart to IPP Lau and PAG Connie for the extra effort
and support given to us during our 28th Induction and Turn over Ceremonies
last June 15, 2019.
I hope LACES, that as we continue to serve, and enjoy our camaraderie,
with all the fun-filled fellowship, may we fulfil all our challenges with gladness
in our hearts. Signing in, Annabelle Eve R. Sator, your Champion President.
As we waited at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Gay and I took a
walk to people watch. We went from one end of the terminal to the other and back, looking
at every gate, every destination, every group of people waiting for their flights.
Each gate was its own island of humanity. When we walked down the centre of the
concourse, we were in New York, moving along with everyone in one river. But when you
veered off into those seats, you left that current and landed on an island. You were already
in Delhi or Paris or Tel Aviv.
As we started our walk, I thought: "All these different people, all these different countries,
all in one place. This is like Rotary!" But as we walked past gate after gate, I realized
something. It was not like Rotary at all. Because everyone in that river was heading for an
island. And every island stayed an island. The people heading to Taipei might be talking to
one another, but they were not talking to the people heading to Cairo or Lagos.
Contrast that with Rotary. Rotary allows us to connect with one another, in deep and
meaningful ways, across our differences. It connects us with people we would never
otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us
with our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.
Connection is what makes the experience of Rotary so very different from walking along
that concourse at JFK Airport. In Rotary, none of us is an island. All of us are in Rotary
together, whoever we are, wherever we are from, whatever language we speak or
traditions we follow. We are all connected to one another — part of our communities and
members not only of our clubs, but also of the global community to which we all belong.
This connection is what lies at the heart of the Rotary experience. It is what brings us to
Rotary. It is why we stay. Please join your fellow Rotarians on this journey as Rotary
Connects the World.
Mark Daniel Maloney
District President, Rotary International, 2019-2020
I love to travel! I even enjoy the mundane
process of getting from here to there. But
last year, my wife, Gay, and I had one of
those experiences that would strain the
optimism of even the most cheerful
traveller. We found ourselves with six hours
to wait, at an airport where we were not
scheduled to be, on a day we had not
planned still to be traveling, having woken
up that morning at a hotel unknown to us
the night before. It was one of those days.
PAG Cleofe C. Llanos, PHF+3
Editor-in-Chief
Welcome ladies, welcome LACES. President Mark Daniel Maloney’s
theme for the Rotary Year 2019-2020, Rotary Connects the World, asks
Rotarians to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World,
building the connections that allow talented, thoughtful and generous
people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service. Let
us all join President Annabelle Eve Sator in a fun-filled year of service
and fellowship with one another, and together, let’s connect with one
another and with the world.

6 Facts about Rotary
Reference: https://rotary1.org/101-things-about-rotary/
From 1905 until the 1980s, women were not
allowed membership in Rotary Clubs,
although Rotarian spouses, including Paul
Harris’ wife, were often members of the
similar ―Inner Wheel‖ Club. Women did play
some roles, and Paul Harris’ wife made
numerous speeches. In 1963, it was noted
that the Rotary practice of involving wives in
club activities had helped to break down
female seclusion in some countries. Clubs
such as Rotary had long been pre-dated by
women’s voluntary organizations, which
started in the United States as early as 1790.
The change of the second Rotarian motto in
2004, from ―He profits most who serves best‖
to ―They profit most who serve best‖, 99
years after its foundation, illustrates the
move to general acceptance of women
members in Rotary.
The Rotary Club of Eureka in 1987-88
during Pat Folkins presidency admitted the
first woman club member, Peggy Betholtz. To
date we have gained many women
members that have become an integral part
of our club.
Woman in Rotary
1. The first Rotary Club was formed in
1905 when attorney Paul P. Harris called
together a meeting of three business
acquaintances in downtown Chicago
2. The four founder Rotarians (from left)
were: Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele,
Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris.
3. The founders called it ―Rotary‖ after
the practice of rotating meeting locations.
4. The Rotarian motto ―Service Above
Self‖ means the ideal of service as a
basis of worthy enterprise and, in
particular, to encourage and foster high
ethical standards in business and
professions, the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful occupations, and
the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve
society.
5. There’s a secondary motto: ―One
profits most who serves best.‖
6. The first meeting was held in the Room
711 of the Unity Building in downtown
Chicago. It no longer exists (was
demolished in 1989).

The idea of organizing an all-female Rotary Club of Tagum was thought of as early as 1989 by the Rotarian and
Anns of RC Tagum North. The initial organizing of the club however started only sometime in the first week of February
1991.
The names of 28 selected ladies were first floated by the Rotarians & Anns of RC Tagum North. Out of this number,
16 responded by attending the first organizational meeting held at Magnolia Kiosk along Quezon St., Tagum. Other
ladies were later invited to the regular weekly meetings as prospective members of the club although their attendance
along with some of those who were initially invited were irregular. In this organizational meetings, Rotary Information was
given by Rtn. Jess Albacite, Special Governor’s Representative and PP of RC Tagum North, Rtn. Rey Vegara,
Incumbent President RC Tagum North, Rtn. Bebot Madayag, District Governor’s Representative & PP of RC Tagum.
Other Rotarians who helped in giving various information included Rtn. Arrel Olaňo, PP RC Tagum; Rtn. Danny Lee,
Past DGR and PP of RC Tagum North; Rtn. Jun Cagas and Rtn. Raffy Erfe, both RC Tagum North.
Out of the original forty (40) ladies who were invited to organizational meetings, only 25 were finally submitted for
charter membership of the new club. The names which were submitted to Rotary International on October 30, 1992 are
as follows: Nelida Aguillon, Cynthia Catungal, Leonida Decena, Natividad del Rosario, Maria Cleofe Evidente, Corazon
Fernandez, Susan Franco, Rebecca Lectura, Flordeliza Magallon, Marilyn Grace Mangilet, Jocelyn Melendres, Ofelia
Millan, Anna Geraldine Morante, Nenita Nazareno, Providencia Nuňez, Jocelyn Ong, Evelyn Ross Perdido, Carolina
Quirante, Mai Rallos, Agnes Resurreccion, Linda Sicam, Lay Fong Soo-Montero, Arisfina Torre, Conchita Yago, and
Amelie Tan-Ramos.
From these charter members: the following were elected as Charter Officers: Rtn. Rebecca Lectura, Pres.; Rtn.
Providencia Nuňez, Pres.-Elect; Rtn. Nenita Nazareno, Vice-Pres.; Rtn. Susan Franco, Sec.; Rtn. Jocelyn Melendres,
Tres.; Rtn. Linda Sicam, Auditor; Rtn. Conchita Yago, P.R.O.; Rtn. Natividad del Rosario, Sgt-at-Arms; Rtn. Corazon

The club officers & members of the newly organized ROTARY CLUB OF TAGUM GOLDEN L.A.C.E.S. (Ladies in
Action Committed to Effective Service) first met DG Xavier C. Ledesma, Incumbent District Governor for 1991-1992,
at Molave Hotel on Sept. 4, 1992 in his club visitation of the Rotary Clubs in Tagum.
On December 1, 1992, the club received the good news from SEABO that its application for membership was
formally admitted by Rotary International on November 19, 1992 with Club No. 29117.
