“A thing of beauty is a joy forever. “ - John Keats
In a world that is moving ever faster, who has
the time to ‘stop and smell the flowers’! In
this current context of increasing speeds and
diminishing attention spans, OBL/QUE
attempts to add beauty to spaces by creating
pieces of art/design that move you to spare a
moment to slow down from your busy
schedule, take a pause, and reflect upon their
beauty. OBL/QUE aspires to design works that
have an artistic edge to it, with a creative
approach.
OBL/QUE began as a collaborative initiative of
an Architect, an Artist and a Manufacturer in
2007 with a vision of creating a collaborative
platform for designers and artists to
experiment, evolve and discover areas where
art and design overlap to create objects for
today and tomorrow that have intrinsic
design sense as well as high art value.
While OBL/QUE began with a forte in highly
precise metal works, it now works with several
different materials and mediums such as
stainless steel, mild steel, brass, aluminum
and copper to other materials such as stone,
glass, wood, vinyl, paper, fabrics, etc. to
create beautiful and interesting art pieces. It
is well supported in its design as well as
manufacturing endeavors by various
designers, artists, and manufacturers.
OBL/QUE is currently headed by Ms. Saloni
Shah – an Architect and Urban Planner by
qualification, and an artist by heart. She
believes that “Art, Beauty, and Creativity are
motivating, intuitive forces that go beyond
logic, and touch the heart.” Her strengths
include Critical Thinking, Conceptual Design,
Art Integration, Presentation narratives, and
Design Detailing.
Since its inception, OBL/QUE has worked on
over 150 different projects that include
Customized Budgeted Art, Individual
Commissions, Products and interesting
Installations for the hospitality sector,
corporate offices as well as several residences.

Geometries in Nature
LAYERS OF IDEA FOR ARTWORK
The theme of the project correlates with various elements of nature and
geometric shapes also inspired from the natural components like hexagons,
squares, triangles, circles etc. Geometry is seen frequently in several
elements in nature, and it lends a beauty to that element. The artworks
attempt to bring in nature, that reminds you of such beautiful elements
that you often don’t find time to observe everyday in your life.

Gentle and lovely, flowers share their beauty with us and bring us a touch of
eternal things. According to the Mother, each variety of flower has its own
special quality and meaning. By establishing an inner contact with the
flower, this meaning can be known. Flowers speak to us when we know how
to listen to them, the Mother said. It is a subtle and fragrant language. As if
to provide a key to this language, she identified the significances of almost
nine hundred flowers.

PRODUCT SERIES - KOAN
KOAN was a special event – an exhibition of beautifully designed objects and artefacts that flowed from the hearts of the four designer friends. Their passion for designs made
with simple, clean lines and myriad variety colours, and their exploration of several different mediums and techniques generated a series of wonderfully attractive as well as
functional products that brighten up spaces! Team KOAN designed several artefacts as well as home decor items in five different themes – Festive, Floral, Aquatic, Vibrant and
Transformational. Each theme had it’s own corresponding motif as well as colour palette which was explored to make different products.
PRODUCT SERIES-KOAN
THEME GANESHA
From turmeric yellows to sindoor oranges to gulaal reds and so on, these are sacred and auspicious colours of our context. Invoking a joyous and celebratory feeling, this make
our Festive Palette, whose corresponding motif is Ganesha! Being the lord of new beginnings, this was apt to become KOAN’s first theme.
THEME LOTUS
The lotus, emerging from the water and standing above it – undrenched and unsullied – has come to be accepted as a symbol of enlightenment and purity of mind. Not only is
the lotus in bloom a pretty sight, it evokes positive thoughts in one who links it with his own journey on the spiritual path. The Lotus marks the second theme of the KOAN
series.
THEME SEAHORSE
For the third theme in the KOAN series, we dived deep into the ocean and came up with one of the cutest and most fascinating creatures found there – a SEAHORSE! Did you
know that Seahorses are a symbol of Patience, Friendliness, Perspective, Generosity, Persistence, and Contentment? So here comes a splash of blues and aquas with our
Aquatic Theme!
THEME HUMMINGBIRD
Appearing out of nowhere the Hummingbird springs joy in the heart. Iridescent colours shimmering in the breeze, she pauses mid air to to drink in the sweet nectar that the
flower so generously provides her. Hummingbird is a symbol of all things good. This forms the fourth theme of the KOAN series.
THEME BUTTERFLY
Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a Butterfly! The butterfly theme is the fifth theme in the KOAN series that seeks to bring about a warm,
summery feel though the use of bright yellows and blues in combination with sombre browns.
PRODUCT SERIES - CHAMPA
Imagine a courtyard in a contemporary house. Or a framed view of a garden from a house. It will not be surprising to find a beautiful Champa (Plumeria or Frangipani)tree planted strategically as an accent or focus of the space or the view. A perfect combination of sculpture and nature the Champa tree is a favourite ofcontemporary designers. Attractive to people for the fragrance of its flowers, the Champa captured our imagination as a very graceful and elegant structure. A Champa leafwas the inspiration for the first product range by OBL/QUE. We were really inspired by the structure, shape and size, and growth pattern of the Champa leaf, and the productsare our interpretations of the same.
PRODUCT SERIES-CHAMPA SERIES
CHAMPA SERIES
“Autumn” tries to capture the beauty of fallen leaves in autumn season through a set of 10 life-sized Champa
leaves. These stainless-steel leaves are etched using traditional artistic methods and can be mounted at any angle.
This allows one to create very interesting compositions using single or multiple sets.
Size: Each leaf is between 195 mm to 295 mm in
length.
Technique: Made from laser-cut stainless steel, the
leaves are not flat but curved, and the veins are etched manually using traditional artistic techniques.
CHAMPA SERIES
Halo is a blown up Champa Leaf capturing the finer details of its form and surface through traditional etching
techniques. A powerful light source behind it illuminates the wall on which it is mounted, highlighting its silhouette.
The stainless-steel leaf is made in 3 sizes so that they can be used in combinations to create visually powerful
compositions on large surfaces.
Size: 1050 mm x 373 mm, 800 mm x 286 mm, and 550
mm x 197 mm
Technique: Made from laser-cut stainless steel, the
leaves are not flat but curved, and the veins are etched manually using traditional artistic techniques. There is
a simple assembly for housing the light source behind.
CHAMPA SERIES
One of the most irritating moments in our daily life is when the person next to you on your bed turns on the light to
read a book when you are feeling the sleepiest. Designed in two versions, wall-mount and table-mount, ‘Bad Light’
is an artist’s initiative to tackle the issue through a leaf that can be adjusted at various angles to function as a
reading light as well as an ambience light.
Size: Wall mount – 188 mm x 385 mm x 145 mm, Table
mount – 163 mm x 392 mm x 120 mm
Technique: Laser cut, machine bent and welded
stainless steel assembly with options of front surface textures
CHAMPA SERIES
Mask is a versatile light box that can be overlaid with a screen of your choice, and the permutations and
combinations of the screen positioning can create endless possibilities of generating interesting illumination for a

The lotus, emerging from the water and standing above it – undrenched and unsullied – has come to be accepted as a symbol of enlightenment and purity of mind. Not only
is the lotus in bloom a pretty sight, it evokes positive thoughts in one who links it with his own journey on the spiritual path.
