“A BULL, A JUBILEE, AND AN
ENCYCLICAL WALK INTO A BAR . . .” Not really. . . but an explanation of these terms
which have appeared in our Catholic news this year
might be helpful! In April, Pope Francis issued Mis-
ericordiae Vultus: Bull of Indiction on the Extraordi-
nary Jubilee of Mercy, announcing the year of mercy
which will begin in December. In June, he issued the
encyclical Laudato Si!: On Care for Our Common
Home. What is the difference between a bull and an
encyclical? What’s a jubilee?
In the past two weeks’ bulletins we covered
the bull and the encyclical. This week, we feature
the Jubilee!
Unlike the bull and the encyclical, a jubilee is
NOT a papal document. In Judaism and Christianity,
the concept of the Jubilee is a special year of remis-
sion of sins and universal pardon. In the Book of Le-
viticus, a Jubilee year is mentioned to occur every fif-
tieth year. Slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts
would be forgiven and the mercies of God would be
particularly manifest. In the Catholic tradition, a jubi-
lee is a holy year designated by the Pope, a year
of jubilee is a time of joy, remission or universal par-
don.
The Vatican pointed out that the opening of
the “Jubilee of Mercy” will take place on [December
8, 2015], the 50th anniversary of the closing of the
Second Vatican Council in 1965. “I am convinced
that the whole Church will find in this jubilee the joy
needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of
God, with which all of us are called to give consola-
tion to every man and woman of our time,” Pope
Francis said. “From this moment, we entrust this holy
year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her
gaze upon us and watch over our journey.” http://

So now you have it. A bull, an encyclical, and
a jubilee walk into a bar. What happens after the
three get there we don’t know!
DID YOU KNOW THAT . . .
It takes 11 barrels of crude oil to make one ton of plastic grocery bags?
It takes ONE GALLON of water to produce ONE almond? Keep in mind that 99% of our al-
monds come from California
50% of what goes into land fills could actually be recycled?
How well are we using God’s gifts?

THE POWER OF A WARM WELCOME
AND GRATITUDE An alumnus of St. Helen School and Carroll
High School was in town this weekend and went to
Mass at St. Helen’s. She was so touched by the warm
welcome she received, particularly from Fr. Dave, that
as she sat at Mass, she felt she wanted to give some-
thing back. When she came into the rectory office on
Monday morning, she spoke of how grateful she was
for her Catholic education and how it took her many
years to realize its important effect on her life. She
made it a priority before returning to her home out of
state to make a donation to our Educational Endow-
ment fund. How awesome! Blessings on both sides!
THE LITURGICAL MINISTERS’ SCHEDULE FOR AUGUST 8 AND 9
Check out the Food For All in-
sert in today’s bulletin! To wel-
come Pope Francis to the United
States, the Archdiocese of Cincin-
nati is preparing a “Spiritual Bou-
quet” for him. Parishes and other
organizations are asked to
“multiply” the loaves and fishes by collecting 5000
letters to Congress advocating for protection of the
Child Nutrition Programs and pledging to collect
1,000,000 items of food during 2015-16. After the
Masses on Aug. 15-16, St. Helen parishioners will
have the opportunity to sign letters to Senator Brown,
Senator Portman, and Representative Turner. We hope
everyone will take a few minutes to advocate for pro-
grams that affect the well-being of children. Arch-
bishop Schnurr will bless the letters before they are
hand-carried to local congressional offices, and he
will send a letter to the papal nuncio informing the
Holy Father of our efforts. What a wonderful gift to
the Holy Father as he continues to reach out to the
poorest among us! Then stay tuned for Part Two of
the spiritual bouquet – we’ll be collecting St. Helen
parishioners’ pledges for a parish food drive to be
held during Thanksgiving week. How many items will
we contribute toward the 1,000,000 archdiocesan
goal?
You don’t want to miss this!

PRAYER SERVICE FOR PEACE Join St. Peter in Chains Cathedral,
downtown Cincinnati, on Saturday, August
15 at 10am for a Prayer Service for Peace.
World War II ended on this day in 1945.
Physician and scientist, Takashi Nagai, will
be especially remembered. He looked at the
horrible tragedy of the atomic bomb, and
through his faith saw this disaster as a sacri-
fice where hope and peace would be pur-
sued in the future. This saintly, Catholic
man influenced a number of people both in
Japan and in the world. At the Prayer Ser-
vice for Peace, a bronze statue of Takashi
Nagai, commissioned by local artist Barbara
Trauth, will be unveiled. All are invited to
come pray for peace in a world that so des-
perately needs it. Please contact Fr. Barry
for more information, 513.421.5354.

DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD!
Recently released videos in which officials of Planned Parenthood traffic in human organs,
tissues, and body parts from their abortion clinics are chilling and appalling. They display a cal-
lous disrespect for human life. Staff from the Family and Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese
took part in “Women Betrayed” rally at Planned Parenthood’s Cincinnati clinic on July 28 to pro-
test this outrage.
However, we need to do more than raise our voices. I urge Catholics and all people of good
will to write to their representatives in state and national government, asking them to stop the
flow of your tax dollars to Planned Parenthood. The United States Conference of Catholic Bish-
ops has supported defunding for many years. Planned Parenthood received more than $1.3 million
in state funds from Ohio and $500 million in federal funds in fiscal 2013-2014.
Please also support a pro-life pregnancy center that helps women in unintended pregnan-
cies, providing many needed services. You can find a list of them at http://
www.catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/family-life/respect-life/pregnancy-coalition-
resource-page/ If you have had or participated in an abortion and suffer remorse, please know
that the Church’s post-abortion healing ministry, Project Rachel, stands ready to offer compas-
sionate assistance. Learn more about Project Rachel at www.projectrachelcincy.com.
