About Our Company

Diamond Refrigerators was started in the year 2000 in a small 30 foot by 40 foot building by James Miller, an Amishman, who had previous experience with compression refrigeration. His idea was to fix propane refrigerators in RV’s and motor homes for the many tourists that visit the state of Michigan each summer and repair refrigerators for the local Amish community and other Amish communities surrounding them.

Business was brisk the first summer and the following year Omer Schrock, another Amishman, joined James in a partnership and business continued to pick up with each consecutive year. There was one problem. The business was seasonal. After all, who wants a vacation in Michigan in the wintertime. During the summer months, business was great, but when winter rolled around, with all the extra time on their hands, James and Omer thought how they might be able to keep busy year round.

They started by calling other RV repair centers wondering if they could buy non-working refrigerators that they had replaced with new refrigerators the previous summer. They found one place that had about 20 refrigerators that they could have, free for the taking. They quickly snatched these up and by using good parts from the different refrigerators, they were able to repair and fix a few of the refrigerators. These refurbished refrigerators sold very well. They continue this practice for a few years.

By 2003 James and Omer had built a much larger manufacturing facility, hired 3 more workers, and purchased a tubing bender and started rolling out their own, newly designed cooling system that they installed in new electric refrigerators that were stripped of their compression refrigeration system. This was a major success and got them started. There new design was not without flaws and over the following years changes were made that produced better results.

In 2011 James left the business to pursue other interests and Omer took his place as the primary owner and Senior Partner. An even larger manufacturing facility was added in 2011 that greatly improved efficiency.

Today we have 10 employees and have 15,000 square feet of manufacturing/warehousing space. We have built over 14,000 refrigerators that have gone to the United States, Canada and seven other countries throughout the world. Since July 2014 Diamond refrigerators are CSA certified for your assurance of performance and safety.

All of our staff is Amish and we use Diamond refrigerators in our own homes for our only source of refrigeration. We are all committed to producing a top quality product and the customer service that goes with it. We have total confidence in our product and back it up with a 5 year warranty.

Gas Refrigeration:How It Works

It all starts with a small flame which heats the boiler. Ammonia gas is boiled out of the water solution and moves up to the condenser. In the condenser the ammonia gas cools to form a liquid, releasing its heat. The liquid ammonia moves to the evaporator where it expands to a gas and at the same time becomes very cold. The evaporator is found on the inside of the freezer and refrigerator sections. The ammonia gas moves down to the absorber where it is absorbed into a water solution. The water solution moves to the boiler, where it is heated again and the process repeats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much will it cost to run my refrigerator?

A: Your refrigerator will run approximately 55 hours on a gallon of propane. Divide your propane price per gallon by 55 and that will give you the hourly cost to run your refrigerator.

Q: How often will I need to clean the burner?

A: Cleaning the burner is a very important part in performance of your refrigerator. Under most circumstances cleaning the burner every 6 months is sufficient unless the refrigerator is in a dusty environment. Any time the burner flame has a yellow color, the burner should be cleaned.

Q: How often will I need to defrost my refrigerator?

A:Ambient temperatures and refrigerator usage dictate the rate of frost buildup on the fins. All frost comes from moisture in the air that comes in contact with the cold fins when the door is opened or from a defective door seal. Frost levels can be drastically reduced if hot foods are allowed to cool to room temperature and condensation is wiped from containers prior to their placement in the refrigerator. One easy way to defrost your refrigerator is to turn the thermostat down to the “Minimum” setting in the evening and leaving it set there overnight. The next morning, turn the thermostat knob to its previous setting. If this is done weekly, all the frost should be gone in the morning. Remember: You must set the thermostat to its previous setting.

Q: Can I lay my refrigerator on its side for transport?

A: Yes. Unlike electric refrigerators, propane refrigerators can be transported on their side. The best side for transport is to lay the refrigerator on the burner side. (usually the left side facing the refrigerator) If you lay the refrigerator on the burner side, you can set it upright and light it immediately. Otherwise, you can usually start it after about an hour of standing upright

Q: What if my fridge quits working and I live in a fly-in camp. Will I need to fly it out to fix it?

A: All parts on a Diamond refrigerator can be changed in the field, should something fail. Also, our friendly, knowledgeable tech support is only a phone call away to answer any questions you may have regarding your refrigerator.
