Dear readers,Welcome to the new issue of our magazine. I think it will help you broaden your view of the activities our company devotes itself to. It will show you some unconventional solutions and introduce you to another region and interesting people. In short, it will tell you more about the company where we spend most of our time. One of the themes of the current issue is support for young talent. It may be collaboration with students or the options for career growth that we offer our colleagues. Early in the year, our Excellence Center held training for university students. Our HR team did a splendid job and provided plenty of interesting information. Many of the fifth-year students had never experience practical applications, most of them didn´t know our company much before. Some could refer to „multinational company that makes compressors“. They experienced that Atlas Copco has a pleasant working atmosphere and a friendly team. They admired the interesting work, the options for professional growth, and the environment that motivates us toward further learning and self-improvement.I am greatly pleased with the image the students have of us. After all, they are our future colleagues, maybe managers, or customers. And their feedback fills me with optimism that we have something to look forward to.It may be worthwhile sending those students a copy of this very issue. In the interview with Tomáš Pasovský, in fact, they would see that their expectations are on target. Supporting young talent is one of our priorities. We would rather cultivate our managers internally than look for them elsewhere. In his interview, Tomáš describes his beginnings as a salesman, the programs he participated in at Atlas Copco, and the path that led him to a management position after nine years at the company. It wasn’t easy, but he certainly didn’t expect it to be. It was full of challenges and new experiences that enriched him regardless of his career path. All of Atlas Copco’s activities are done with the end customer’s satisfaction in mind. To provide them continuously with new solutions for their operations, we have created two new segments. The teams will be more narrowly specialized and have more room to get to know their customers better. The first segment focuses on metal fabrication, and the second on energy customers.Eager for travelling and experiencing the beauty of our neighbours? Maybe the introduction of other country in our region - Montenegro - will inspire you to plan your summer holidays. I hope you will enjoy the following pages and perhaps find inspiration in them. I wish you an enjoyable read! Sincerely, Cyril

What made you apply for the Challenger program? Atlas Copco is intensely dedicated to developing young talent. It offers them a chance to participate in a joint six-month project. That was a big challenge for me and a chance to learn something new. I was also attracted to the chance to get to know the company headquarters and new colleagues from every corner of the world.

Did the program meet your expectations? Absolutely. I got a good overview of Atlas Copco’s work in the individual divisions, at the headquarters and in our Swedish production plant for industrial tools. It was hugely beneficial to exchange experiences with colleagues from other countries and fields than I’d worked in.

Challenger is known for being rather demanding. Is that true? Even during the program, I had the usual daily duties of my job as a supplier to the automotive industry. It wasn’t easy to combine this work with the tasks from the Challenger assignments. I was in a team with colleagues from Mexico, Sweden, Russia and China. Just scheduling our teleconferences was a challenge because of the different time zones. Not to mention their different work habits, mentality and previous experience.

How do you look back on this experience? Very positively. I learned a lot, and it opened the doors to management positions. Right after the Challenger program ended, I got a chance to develop my career in a new product marketing team that was forming.

What was your job there? At the time, Atlas Copco sales were growing very fast in Eastern Europe, and it was necessary to support them with marketing. It is well known that Atlas Copco places a lot of emphasis on customer feedback. We like it when they describe their needs to us and give us their ideas for improvement. This allows us to focus our innovation on what the customer really values. So my task was to build a strong team to make sure our customers’ demands and requests made it to the development centre in Sweden. It got up and running, and every year we can introduce innovative products to the East European market that allow our customers to continuously improve their competitiveness.

It wasn’t just customers’ ideas that made it to Sweden, but you too. What was your impression? It was really interesting to be right there to see new products develop and to communicate with global teams. I was even more fascinated by the country itself. Sweden is a beautiful place, full of greenery, small islands and friendly people. It’s easy to rent a boat and relax with friends on the ocean or just take a walk in a city park.

Did anything surprise you there? For six months, I was in Sweden to sub for a colleague on paternity leave. My job was to support global products for fastening applications and also development of new products for market introduction the next year. I was surprised at how big the Atlas Copco team is and how many separate development projects go on at the same time. Here at the local customer centres, we just see the results of their work. The tip of the iceberg. But from the first idea or drawing, a new product travels a long way, and an unbelievable number of people are involved. They are smart, determined professionals whose common goal is to help our customers improve the quality and efficiency of their production processes.

Your other challenge is the position of BLM for adhesives in our customer centre where you’re now starting to work. Are you excited? I like new work challenges and love to learn new things. The IAS segment (industrial adhesives solutions) is brand new and opens a lot of opportunities to us. Thanks to the integration of two new brands, SCA and Henrob, we will be able to offer automotive customers a full array of assembly solutions. That will include tightening with Atlas Copco tools, adhesive fastening with SCA and riveting with Henrob products. I look forward to building a local sales and service team, and I think that

ANYONE CAN WORK THEIR WAY UP – ATLAS COPCO HELPS EMPLOYEES GROW THEIR CAREERS

Continued from page 1

with our new brands we’ll come up with the best offerings. So that local customers will also benefit from the synergy of all our brands.

New experiences obviously open the doors to further career advancement. Do you have any idea where you’d like to go in the future? Right now I’m fully focused on developing the new IAS sales unit and on full integration of the SCA and Henrob brands into the Atlas Copco structure in Eastern Europe. In the future, I’d certainly like to go farther, but I’d rather wait. I’ve got interesting work ahead of me, full of challenges, and there’s no reason to rush off somewhere else.

Next year will be your 10th anniversary at Atlas Copco. Have you thought of looking around at other companies? For now, I don’t see a reason to. The Swedish corporate culture, which has spread even to the local customer centres, provides plenty of opportunity to develop a career, both in a given region and in global positions. I like the fact that Atlas Copco doesn’t hire managers from outside, but develops its own employees. It’s clear that “first in mind, first in choice” isn’t just a phrase made up to support sales — it’s a philosophy that flows through the whole company and even works internally. What’s more, after these years, I’m convinced that Atlas Copco acts fairly and responsibly and strives to create a pleasant work environment for all its employees.

So you can see yourself at the company all the way to retirement? Definitely. But I hope that won’t be for quite a while.

TIERP WORKS ON THE PATH TO LEAN ASSEMBLY

Some years ago the management team at Tierp Works began looking for ways to keep the plant’s competitive edge. As a result, in 2011 the LEAN project was started in the Assembly Department, focusing on Group 6 who assemble LTV tools. A project team was given the task of creating a takted assembly line (see box) built on LEAN principles.

Challenging the existing system Mattias Holmstedt, Project Leader for LEAN Assembly: “After intensive discussions focusing on the principles of LEAN, the team were encouraged to challenge the existing production system and contribute their own ideas. In time they found it was possible to work in a takted flow.

Transforming Tensor production During 2015, the factory has worked with LEAN in the Tensor group. This group consists of approximately 40 employees, 17 product families with 750 article numbers, and it manufactures more than 30 000 tools per year. Production Leader Fredrik Johansson: “During education sessions everyone has been given the chance to talk about what LEAN actually is and what is meant by the different LEAN concepts. The aim is to create a culture / tradition in the group where small improvements are made continuously, and the enthusiasm shown has been fantastic.”

Discussions important Mattias: “Group discussions are very important. We have discussed time management, identified areas of waste, reviewed our movement patterns during our work, and discussed how we can improve the line layouts.”

Seeing LEAN in a new light The Tensor group members contributed their own suggestions throughout the project. Hasena Memic, Ove Melin and Malin Sagström admit that there was scepticism and fear of change at the beginning, but this soon disappeared and they all agree that they now see the takted production line in a new light. “With more knowledge, you get a better understanding of how things work. We have taken part in all the thinking behind this and been able to question the way things are done.”

Spreading LEAN thinking Mattias: “Four production lines have now been transformed: Line 6 LTV in 2011, Ergopulse in 2013-2014, Tensor in 2014 and Battery Tools in 2015. The challenge for the future is to build takted lines for the rest of the assembly groups. Then it is a case of designing a complete factory layout and not just isolated lines. “For every line that we build we free up about 30% of the floor space, which means we can accommodate more production in the form of assembly or machines. In the future we hope to spread LEAN thinking throughout the organization.”

What is a takted assembly line? The concept Takt specifies the production volume per unit of time. The workload is balanced between the stations and the takt time and results are visualized on displays. When you have a problem in a takted line you light a signal for assistance. Takt reduces stress and helps to identify bottlenecks.

By applying LEAN principles to an operation it is possible to improve production flow, ensure more predictable and accurate deliveries, and operating cost reduction. In the Assembly Department at Tierp Works there are now four LEAN production lines and the transformation continues.

NUTRUNNERS CAN DO MORE THAN TIGHTEN. NO ONE KNOWS THIS BETTER THAN THE PRODUCTION OPTIMIZATION TEAM

The factory in Nošovice produces manual transmissions for Hyundai vehicles. During their assembly, checking the torque of transmission input shafts is key. This was previously done automatically during comprehensive testing at the end of the assembly line. However, the check was time-consuming and didn’t detect all errors reliably. “The previous routine held up production and decreased assembly efficiency. The customer asked us for a new solution,” explains Michal Kilián of Atlas Copco.

The manufacturer asked that the torque of the input shaft be checked independently at one of the assembly stations. Now the test is done by one of the line operators. “The line takes the transmission to him in neutral. The worker puts our nutrunner with a special adapter on the input shaft, performs the inspection process, and then everything is repeated in gear,”

Kilián describes. After each phase of the inspection process, the control unit of the Atlas Copco nutrunner signals the result of each phase to the line’s PLC. If the whole test comes out perfectly, the transmission continues down the line.

The solution is completely original. Tools that commonly tighten a joint to a specified torque can very sensitively and precisely evaluate changes in torque when the transmission shaft is moving freely. “It was basically a new way of using the tools. For that reason, it was very important to us to test the functionality and to see the test report showing the correctly chosen strategy and final installation,” Kilián explains. However, the Production Optimization team that was in charge of the project started from scratch. “First they had to figure out what kind of tightening strategy to choose in order to replace the previous inspection mechanism.

LDM’s assembly shop underwent a big reorganization last year. This was to help solve problems with unstable tightening torque and improve operator conditions. Atlas Copco technicians proposed a solution that did it all. Plus, it quickly improved productivity.

LDM, of Česká Třebová, has made industrial fittings for a quarter century. Its offerings include a wide range of valves of various sizes. Assembling them requires different tightening torques, ranging from 20 Nm to 450 Nm. Until recently, they relied on pneumatic or electric impact or pulse nutrunners, most of which didn’t allow tightening torque adjustment. “The customer had problems with unstable tightening torque, which was mainly caused by poor-quality air in his network or to errors by the operators themselves,” explains Ondřej Valášek, who was in charge of the project. In addition to poor reliability, the customer also complained about how uncomfortable the tools were to use. “The nutrunners were very loud and heavy. Other problems included the tools’ vibration and demanding maintenance,” Valášek adds.

And that is why the company turned to Atlas Copco. “We needed to improve quality in the tightening process, limit the number of tools at the facility, and improve working conditions

for line workers,” says Miroslav Kašpar, the employee responsible at LDM. The solution was to rebuild the whole assembly line to make the process more efficient. On his own initiative and the recommendation of Atlas Copco experts, the customer reorganized the entire production facility. Torque reaction arms were built, along with trolleys for easier handling of the valves, which significantly sped up assembly. Tensor DS direct electrical nutrunners with a control unit handle the tightening. They offer 10 different tightening programs and tightening speed selection.

In Česká Třebová, they praise the investment for increasing productivity in some sections of assembly. It has increased tightening quality, and thanks to the variable nutrunners, decreased the number of tools needed for production. There was also a decrease in the noise that had bothered the operators. An unexpected bonus was free space in the production hall after the renovation. All the improvements convinced the company’s owners to gradually replace the equipment at the rest of their production sites.

FITTINGS MANUFACTURER IMPROVES EFFICIENCY WITH FEWER NUTRUNNERS

Atlas Copco nutrunners do a very non-traditional job in a car factory in Nošovice. The Production Optimization team proposed a way to use ordinary nutrunners to sensitively monitor transmission shaft rotation. The solution is original, and the customer is happy. It saves time and significantly improves monitoring of assembled parts.

Also important was choosing the right tool that could perform the test quickly, precisely and independently of the operator,” he adds.

The customer is pleased with this non-traditional approach to his demanding request. It has increased inspection reliability – the process takes less time, plus the inspection data on every transmission is automatically stored to a database.

At the beginning of the year, students at the University of Žilina got an unprecedented opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge to work. As part of quality management, Atlas Copco gave them training on lean principles. They got practical demonstrations of assembly technology and practised on a demo line. For many, it was their first practical experience. The young technologists received very non-traditional instruction. At the Excellence Center in Bratislava, they didn’t just visit classrooms, but training centres and a demonstration line. And the latter made the biggest impression. “The demonstrations let us merge our theoretical knowledge with practical application. We got a good idea of how to use our classroom knowledge,” a student was heard to say after the course. They also valued the chance to meet lean principles close up and get their hands on modern technology. The goal of the course was to show students how lean principles can be applied at an assembly facility, and to show visually how they affect the efficiency of the whole work process. “The biggest takeaway from the

whole course was s that they understandably explained the basic approaches to applying lean management. And that we could immediately transfer that theory to practical tasks,” says Juraj Šidlík, one of the participants. For many of them, it was their first practical contact with assembly. And besides that, they got out of the classroom desk. “I’m in the fifth year, and this was my first practical course. I think that for a future graduate, there is no substitute for this personal experience,” says Monika Ďobeková. She and her classmate agreed that the course’s completion certificate is just as important to them as the experience. And that the Atlas Copco visit will go into their professional résumé. “I’ve already got it in my LinkedIn profile,” Ďobeková smiles.

At Atlas Copco, they were also satisfied. “We would love to continue collaborating with the universities in the future,” says Tomáš Pasovský. “We’d like to transfer our experience to students in technical fields, and also provide them with a chance to see modern assembly technology with their own eyes,” he adds. However, they

wouldn’t like to limit themselves to courses at the Excellence Center. For example, Atlas Copco experts could help teach professional subjects and cooperate with the school on thesis input.

They were also surprised by young people’s interest in a job fair that Atlas Copco was involved in at the University of Žilina shortly after the course ended. “We were surprised at how our course had reverberated around the school. Students knew about it from their classmates. And that gave them a much better idea of what our company does,” says Monika Pagáčová of the HR team.

The unique demonstration line at the Excellence Center in Bratislava has been serving Atlas Copco customers and employees throughout the region since 2012. It is based on a successful concept introduced at the company’s headquarters in Sweden. The sophisticated training system teaches Atlas Copco employees and sales partners to fully exploit the potential of Atlas Copco products. If collaboration with universities strengthens, technical students could also benefit from the demo line. The interest is surely there.

Our region

A country with a long tradition, the meeting point of different cultural and religious influences on the border of Orthodox East and Catholic West, today’s Montenegro is a multi-confessional and multi-ethnic environment functioning in perfect harmony.

The first evidence of Balkan civilization dates back to 7000 B.C. The Illyrians settled in the area that is now called Montenegro in 600 B.C. This country, for its size has a very complex history. It was situated on the front lines of, among others, the Romans, Ottomans and Napoleon‘s troops. Of course, the occupation of a part of Montenegro by the Venetians and Austria-Hungary has also contributed to a mixture of architectural and life styles. By the way, the last occupation has provided Montenegro with an extensive ‚road network‘, the first in the western part of the country.

What to see Kotor Located along one of World‘s most beautiful bays is Kotor, a city of traders and famous sailors, with many stories to tell. The town of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site squeezed between the sea and steep cliffs. Don’t miss its spectacular 4-km long chain of ramparts built from the 9th century onwards and continuously restyled up until the 19th century. A never-ending flight of irregular steps takes you up to St Ivan’s Fortress, sitting 250 m above Kotor. The walled town is criss-crossed by a maze of narrow streets and small cobbled squares. Visit St Tryphon cathedral (1166), with its Baroque façade and traces of 14th century frescoes.

Ostrog Monastery This monastery is located in the vicinity of Nikšić, built in the steep rock overlooking

the Bjelopavlicka Plain. This monastery is the most famous pilgrimage site in Montenegro. It was founded by the Herzeg Archbishop Vasilije in the 17th century. He was buried here and canonised as a miracle-performing saint.

What to eat

Cuisine in Montenegro has multi-cultural influences from a variety of sources thanks to the country’s historical past. These range from Italian and Mediterranean to Turkish and Hungarian. Along the coast, seafood obviously dominates and the quality is generally excellent. Inland, cheese and meat dishes are more common.

You will find the basic European cuisine in restaurants, but what you should try by all means is: lamb or goat roast meat under sac (izpod sača), pivski kajmak (a special milk cream from Piva), kačamak (weighty dish consist of mashed potatoes, wheat and corn flour, served with cheese and milk), cicvara (buttered corn porridge), fried carp and smoked bleak. Then sample Vranac or Krstac wine and accompany it with something sweet like cheese cake, peach or water melon; then relax in the afternoon with Nikšicko beer, and in the early evening invigorate yourself with rakija (grape brandy), along with Neguski pršut (smoked ham), kožji sir (goat cheese) and tomatoes. If you opt for a slap up dinner you can add some surmuletts in the frying pan or a grilled greater amberjack.

OUR COUNTRIES: MONTENEGROThe pearl of the Mediterranean, unique in many ways, is situated in the south of the Adriatic. Nowhere else can you find, so much natural wealth, beauty, mild beaches, clear lakes, fast flowing rivers, and gorgeous mountains in such a compact area as in Montenegro. In the morning you can wake up by the beautiful Adriatic coast, have lunch on the banks of Skadar Lake, and enjoy an evening walk in the Montenegrin mountains. Montenegro cannot leave you feeling indifferent.
