Have you wondered why it takes a minute to say hello and forever to say goodbye? Isn’t it is because of the fond memories and attachment you share ?

Be it the zestful Holi celebrations or the countless discussions over the mess table, each one of you would have had some experiences to take away from your stay here at H1. Should you choose to reminisce about your life at IIT think about these incidents. Think about the favorite IPL team you supported and the excitement in the TV room when your team won. Think about friends you made and the funny incidents you shared. Cherish the memories of playing football under floodlights. Go back in time to the late night birthday celebrations and the canteen treats that followed. Remember the sad times, the happy times and when the nostalgia is at its peak, smile in comfort that these memories can never be taken away from you.

We would like to thank all the the inmates for their contributions, helping us put together this magazine, Anubhooti, a souvenir, reminding you of the roller coaster time you enjoyed here at H1 and at IIT Bombay.

On behalf of the H1 family, wish you all happy reading.

It gives me great pleasure to write this message for ANUBHUTI 2010, the yearly magazine of H1. It is indeed very gratifying to note that this activity has become a yearly event in H1 and is released during the Hostel Day. The magazine captures the experiences of the inmates during their stay in H1. It also gives an opportunity for the inmates to showcase their talent to reflect their thoughts. I would also like to thank the council for their selfless work to manage and take care of the hostel. The work of the council is challenging wherein they have to heed to the demands of the inmates and also manage their academics. It was indeed heartening to note that, as in the past, the current council also gave their full support in running the hostel affairs smoothly. This year a major change that was seen was the shift to adopting private mess in H1. The inmates have accepted

this change gratefully and hopefully are enjoying good food. I take this opportunity to wish all the passing out inmates best of luck for their future journey in life.

I am sure that the graduating inmates will cherish the

ANUBHUTI copy that they will take with them. All though they are moving out of H1, they are always welcome in the future to H1 to remember their stay

and association. Finally, I would like to appreciate

the effort and dedication put in by the editorial team

of ANUBHUTI 2010.

Message from Warden’s nominee

I am thankful to the council 2009-10 and the Warden of H1 who had shown their

confidence and honored me as Warden’s Nominee to serve my beloved hostel. It was indeed a great pleasure to contribute to the hostel affairs consecutively for two years, firstly as a Maintenance Councilor and now as Warden’s Nominee. Being a part of two councils, it was a nice experience to see two different ways of approaching the same goal – betterment of H-1.

Over the years, H-1 has raised its reputation as an active hostel in the institute. H-1 is a mix of both worlds; it has peaceful, calm environment as well as it has cheerful environment during cultural and sports activities. I always consider myself fortunate to be in H-1, which is my second home.

During the tenure as Maintenance Councilor, work involved overall administration and obviously the maintenance of the hostel equipments & facilities. This responsibility unknowingly enriched my personality with

qualities like tremendous patience, leadership, risk

taking ability, decision making, and source of

motivation.

This year, I worked with the new council as a Warden’s Nominee. It was great, to see

the zeal & dedication with which the council

members worked to make H-1 a proud place. Their

efforts are truly commendable.

I would also like to appreciate the efforts of Anubhooti team. All credits to the enthusiasm and their dedication to bring out this magazine.

To summarize, I simply say that the stay in H-1 was certainly the very good phase of my life. These memories would be cherished life-long.

Regards,

Biswajit Panda

Message from the General SecretaryMy Hostel : Hostel One : Queen

of the campus

H1 has its own place in the history of IITB as it was the first

hostel to come up in the IITB premises. Decades gone by, H1 stands proud amongst all the other hostels as having a distinct vibrant , interactive and a serene atmosphere, ideal for housing research students both in Masters and PhDs.

I was very impressed with the culture of H1 when I first got the hostel and soon I cherished a dream of leading my hostel in the coming days. Today as I write this report, a sense of satisfaction grapples me, I feel proud of being the representative of a hostel which houses brightest minds in the country who, with whom I lived as a family from the time I got admission in this great institute. I thank all the inmates and alumni, who through their continuous efforts for H-1’s improvement, made the hostel reach a level of enlightenment that

it is today.

The friendly and supportive nature

of inmates made working for the hostel a pleasant e x p e r i e n c e . Personally I learnt a lot from

the experience and it will be my

one of the most cherished memories

I shall carry along.

Addressing and interacting with inmates, facilitating council meetings, managing mess workers, managing budget, inviting quotations through a formal process, organising functions, celebrating victories, festivals, organising workshops and orientations, encouraging inmates to participate etc, all of these have only brought out the best within me.

After the elections, the elected members took charge of the council on 23rd April 2009

Page 14: Anubhooti - Indian Institute of Technology Bombayhostel1/downloads/anubhooti...mess table, each one of you would have had some experiences to take away from your stay here at H1. Should

institute, depicted through comic illustrations, was handed over to all the fresher inmates.

On the cultural front, H1 soon got into the groove with celebration of Independence day followed by Ganesh Festival. Ganesha celebration witnessed participation from large number of inmates for Eco-friendly Ganesha Idol making, strotra chanting, daily poojas, and finally the visarjan saw all inmates dancing to the drum beats on their way out to the Powai Lake .

This set the trigger for enthusiasm among the inmates and soon hostel witnessed overwhelming participation in Dussera, Deepawali and many other festivals that followed.

To identify H1 talents and to encourage participation a Freshie Cultural Night and a Hostel Idol competition was held. There was participation from the hostel in almost all the cultural GCs with H1 standing second in the PG Cult GC ranking.

Also four institute level workshops: one in Fine Arts and three for music were held.

Among institute events like Swar Sandhya, Kaladarshan etc., H1 inmates got a platform to showcase their talent. Also, PAF too saw inmates’ participation in fine-arts,

with already some experience of working for the hostel as a part of the welfare team for the previous council. Also we were already looking after the delivery of the equipment like washing machines, geysers, aquaguards and other items purchased by the previous council under the funds given by the institute.

The foremost problem to hit us was the voluntary shifting of elected members of the council from H1 to H12 and H13. That left the council stranded as the Web and Alumni Secretary, Mess Secretary and Cultural Secretary prepared to leave. The onus was on the remaining council to fill the vacant council positions. Finally the council nominated people for vacant posts of Cultural Councillor, Mess Councillor, Mess Secretary and Computer Secretary.

We started off with the aim of increasing participation and awareness of the inmates regarding the institute level workshops and General Championship events.

Hence a thoroughly planned Freshie Orientation was conducted for the freshers batch of 2009, with each council, including the General Secretary coming up with their plans aided by a presentation. Also, a rule book describing the rules of the hostel and the facilties offered both by the hostel and the

prod and dance.

In the intercollegiate events, inmates participated in IIMB’s cult fest Unmaad and IIMA’s cult fest CHAOS.

A new Octapad and an Electronic Tanpura in the music room, new books in library and two new notice boards were procured. Also all the library books were catalogued.

I would like to thank our Cultural Councillor Rohit Kamath, Cultural Secretaries Vishal Vispute and Amol Dani, Library and Literary Secretary Krishnan Pandalai and Music Secretary Anand Pratik for the efforts that they took.

The cultural scenario has never been such vibrant before, thanks to their efforts.

On the Sports front, the determination of the Sports Co Tej Vohra and Secys Iman Mukherjee and Bhushan Virkar saw H1 sports enthusiasts brought to various sports camps followed by regular practising for the GCs well ahead in time. Consequently H1 approached every GC it participated with aggression which saw it making a mark in all of the 12 GCs it participated. Sports Co’s vision of resurrecting a Hockey Team for H1 was well achieved with H1 participating in both Sophie Hockey and Hockey GC with 16 players

overall.

Also, 5 players from H1 made it to the inter IIT sports training camp. During the tenure, a Basketball full court was constructed. A full Hockey kit comprising of Hockey sticks and protective gear, a new bench press for the Gymnasium, a multi-purpose exercise machine, weighing machine, twisting machine, bench press, weights and a Pool table were procured by the sports council. The Sports Council’s hard work did fructify and their efforts have resulted in unprecedented surge in participation in various sports from the Hostel.

They say it takes a good diet to remain mentally, physically and psychologically healthy. Hence comes the importance of mess. When we took charge our mess was still run by central government employed mess workers. Initially the mess burden was all onto our mess secretary Teja for more than two months .Then later he was joined by Mess Co Sachin and another Mess Secy Amit. Still, managing the non complying Mess workers was a big challenge. Finally our Council decided to go for privatisation and by december end our mess became a fully functional privatised mess with V.N. Caterers

given the contract as per the legal process of tendering.

Mess Council introduced many new measures both before and after the mess privatisation like introduction of Chaas, Cocum and Rasna in the summers and wheat bread in tiffin. Also many new cuisines were introduced. Several polls were taken to induct the feedback of inmates regarding various items. Overall a balanced, nutritious and tasty food menu was strived for. Also despite of high inflation, the mess council successfully maintained the monthly mess bills within bounds.Kudos to them for their hard work.

Maintenance Council comprising of Maint-Co Nikunj Bhagat and secretaries Abhijeet and Rahul undertook the task of maintaining H1 hygienic and clean. Also the council did a great job in maintaining gardens and aquarium considering the fact that it went without a Garden and Aquarium secy throughout the tenure.

To curb the injudicious use of resources like water and electricity, maintenance council created awareness amongst inmates by putting up posters calling for saving precious resources. Also electronic timers were inducted in Geyser circuit to save electricity. Random checks of hostel rooms

were done periodically to nab those guilty of wasting electricity. The housekeeping personnel, along with the supervisor were kept on strict vigilance.

The start of the tenure saw purchase of Tata Sky Dish TV connection for inmates to watch matches hassle free and uninterrupted. Also new washing machines, aquaguards and geysers were procured. Recently a vacuum cleaner and speakers for TV room were purchased and the PA system was repaired. I guess all inmates will agree to the hard work put up by the maintenance council.

Computer Councillor Sanket and Computer Secretary Gautam were one of the busiest council members throughout regarding the frequency of tasks they undertook. Old worn-out switches and connections ensured that the computer council rush to inmates’ rescue whenever their internet connectivity went down. Finally LAN renovation was done in H1 and new computers were procured for the computer room. Thanks to the Computer Council’s efforts, H1 boasts of one of the best computer rooms in the institute.

On social front, the council did its bit by collecting voluntary donations from the inmates for the orphanage VATSALYA. Also hostel inmates including council members

regularly attended sessions for NGOs like UDAAN, KRITAGNYATA and ABHYASIKA.

Our council throughout our tenure tried to maintain transparency in our working and minutes of meetings were regularly posted on forum and notice boards.

I hope inmates have found the working of the council hitherto satisfactory.

My Best Wishes to all passing out H1 inmates for their future. Hope they keep in touch with the inmates and with this Hostel.

From the desk of Cultural Council

This was a splendid year for the overall cultural scene of H1. While institute

level competitions brought out the competitive spirit and team work abilities of the people, festivals celebrated within the hostel gave the feeling of being at home. We have tried our best to keep a very good balance between both type of events and H1 junta has actively participated in both. When we took over as the cultural council, our first target was to motivate people to actively participate in various cultural events in the institute and within our hostel. Due to busy schedules, H1 inmates hardly find time for extra activities and when they have time they hardly keep track of the cultural events. So we focused mainly on publicity of the events.

We had a motivating orientation session for the new entrants of H1, introducing them to the various cultural activities and their respective clubs. Data related to the interests and hobbies of each inmate was collected which proved to be very useful in identifying the right talents during GCs. This was followed by fresher’s welcome party where the new inmates were

given an opportunity to showcase their talents which included

dance performance, singing, poetry

and jokes recitation by many. This triggered the

hidden energy within them and

as one of the inmates mentioned that they were

back to enjoying the student life. Orientations were also held for individual genres of cultural events such as Dramatics, Film making, Music, Debating, Dance and Fine arts.

Due to sudden break out of swine flu and due to restrictions from the institute we could not celebrate Dahi Handi. But this did not stop us from celebrating our Independence Day with full enthusiasm and patriotism.

As a tradition Eco Ganesha idol was made in H1 by our inmates and Ganesh utsav was celebrated in full swing for five days with bhajans and Atharvasheersha recitation from inmates. Nashik dhols were

Page 19: Anubhooti - Indian Institute of Technology Bombayhostel1/downloads/anubhooti...mess table, each one of you would have had some experiences to take away from your stay here at H1. Should

arranged for and inmates forgot their submissions/tensions while dancing in the Visarjan procession.

H1’s first ever drama team was formed and they brilliantly performed in the sophie prod event of dramatics. The same play written

by Surinder Pal Singh was selected among top six plays for the national level drama competition held at the fest Unmaad of IIM Bangalore.

Since H1 had no participation in debating events a work shop was organized and a mock debating competition was organized in coordination with Hostel 12. Very good debaters were identified in both Hindi and English sections

who won almost all the rounds of debating and H1 secured 5th position overall in the debating league.

On the day of Dussera, H1 saw a Ravana effigy burning as a symbolic gesture of the good conquering

over the evil. Many people volunteered to prepare Ravana effigy. As per the tradition of H1, a beautiful ‘Pookkalam’ (rangoli of flowers) was prepared by our Keralite friends, on the occasion of Onam.

By this time the Monsoon had arrived and it was the best time to visit the Raigad fort, the king of forts. We left the campus at 2am

Page 20: Anubhooti - Indian Institute of Technology Bombayhostel1/downloads/anubhooti...mess table, each one of you would have had some experiences to take away from your stay here at H1. Should

and reached the fort at 6am. The scenes of hills covered by clouds were breath taking. We couldn’t believe our eyes if what we could see was reality or some fantasy land from the movie LOTR. While it was raining heavily, we had our lunch of hot Pitla Bhakri with spicy chutney in a small hut. It was a memorable trip and we were back in the campus by 9:30pm for dinner.

H1 was clubbed with H12 for the dance GC. The theme of the p e r f o r m a n c e was humorous where Ravana tries to go back in time and win over Sita in a swayamvar but ends up in ‘Rakhi ka Swayamvar’. Sachin Randhive and Aavish Naik were among the lead dancers supported by Badri Narayan, Viral Thaker and others in acting. The team, which also included a few council members, gave an entertaining performance in the convocation hall and won the third prize. H1 also participated in the movie making GC with a short film titled ‘Our Mess’.

Festival of lights Diwali was celebrated by decorating the hostel with traditional lamps. Pooja of Goddesses Lakshmi was also performed followed by bursting of crackers. Carols were sung by the

inmates to celebrate Christmas and also had delicious snacks and cool drinks. New Year was celebrated in a new way. Music was arranged in the footer ground where few of our inmates came forward to showcase their DJing talent. It was a fun filled celebration where we had hot samosas and Jalebis and danced to the music around the camp fire.

On the Republic Day, we had a flag hoisting ceremony followed by Associate Warden’s address to H1ites. The program also saw enthusiastic freshers voicing their views about India and our responsibilities

towards her betterment. This time we gave a new definition to our patriotism - we initiated a money collection drive to help an orphanage. People contributed whole heartedly and H1 made a contribution of around 16000 rupees for the orphanage, ‘Vatsalya’.

Indian classical music workshop was organized in coordination with the music club Saaz. All the music lovers attended and learnt different technicalities of appreciating the Carnatic form of classical music. For the first time Word games GC and Painting workshop was conducted in our mess to increase

the participation from H1. Twelve members participated in each of this event.

H1 won more GC points for the year when Jai Narayan and Nitin Soni

won the third prize in the creative writing GC. This was followed by Krishnan S winning 4th position in the 2nd round of photography GC and Manav Kataria winning 3rd position in the 3rd round.

The singing competition of H1, The Hostel Idol, was organized in the month of March. Our very own Abhisekh Sankaran judged the event and Iman Mukherjee became the new hostel Idol. Holi celebration stood up to its expectation, where

along with natural colors, one could see people’s clothes flying around. One could not stop the energetic H1ites from dragging unaware people, just out of their sleep, right into the mud pond. T-shirt design

competition was held. Though the response was less, we got a very vibrant design for our hostel T-shirt.

We encouraged people to participate in other institute

Events such as Swar Sandhya and Kaladarshan. More than ten paintings and many photographs by H1 inmates were exhibited in Kaladarshan. This year also we had significant participation in PAF.

Two in dance and many others participated in Fine arts and Prod of PAF.

We have procured an Octopad, a guitar processor and a Tanpura for the music room. This will further enrich all genres of music in H1. H1 library has around 1000 books distributed among many genres. The library was not a very popular place, due to which it was somewhat in a state of neglect. Now it has been cleaned and all the books are arranged according to genre and the library is functional again. The library remained open for 3 days a week which encouraged many people to visit it and issue books. Many new books have also been procured to cover wider tastes of the readers.

At the end, we would like to thank our Warden and Associate Warden for their valuable suggestions and moral support throughout our tenure. We would also like to thank all the inmates especially those who contributed in multiple genres of Cultural activities and made our experience a memorable one. It was a very good learning experience for all of us and we hope that in future H1 performs even better on the cultural scene of the institute.

From the desk of Maintenance Council

The Maintenance Council took charge in April 2009. The three of us, still in

our first year then, had little idea of what lies ahead. Faced with the challenge of managing an entire hostel with over 300 inmates, seemed tremendous. But the belief we had in each other and our desire to do something good for the hostel helped us sail through. The contr ibutions given to the hostel by the previous Maintenance Team was commendable and our main role was to preserve what’s already in place and to add our bit to make the hostel a wonderful place to stay. At the outset, we arranged for the renovation of 2nd floor bathrooms in the 3rd wing, which were in utterly unhygienic conditions. Initiatives were taken to ensure that the housekeepers have the necessary amenities like naphthalene balls, scent balls etc. We have revised the schedule of the daily work of the housekeepers keeping in mind the hostel maintenance requirements and the inmates’ availability and above all we made sure that duties are rendered on time.

As and when the new batch arrived, we mobilized ourselves

to make them aware of the hostel facilities, culture, rules and

regulation. The entire council got involved

in preparing for the Freshie O r i e n t a t i o n , which was quite a success

the new atmosphere. Freshie Orientation also helped us to pick out enthusiastic people, who wanted to volunteer for H1 maintenance activities and would probably be our successors next year. We cashed this opportunity to spread awareness among students about energy and water conservation, through posters and by sending mails on the forum. The efforts were appreciated by the inmates but they weren’t effective in curbing the enormous electricity that the hostel consumes. Still, our hopes were high and we tried to reduce the usage of power hungry geysers by installing electronic and mechanical timers in some wings. This effort was highly commended by the Head of Electrical Maintenance but could

not be pursued further, because the institute has decided to install solar water heaters in our hostel within a couple of months.

This year the institute started Technical GC events. We motivated the students to participate in these events and also funded their activities. It was a moment to cherish, when our hostel stood second in the event Transformers. To revive the zeal among the students for Tech competitions, in the GBM we proposed for the creation of a post of Tech Secretary, which was unanimously accepted.

We took the initiative to organise the long neglected cycle stand, it was a real mess with no order and discipline before we intervened. We must say it was one of the most difficult tasks that we handled during our tenure. It was really difficult to induce sense of responsibility in few residents and the cycles were always parked out of place which created a lot of obstruction for the others. Apart from few glitches, we received a lot of support and co-operation from the students, which kept us always motivated all along.

During our tenure, we equipped the hostel with extra washing machines, geysers, new public announcement system, a home theatre system and vacuum cleaners.

We wish to thank our

housekeepers (Asif, Suresh, Prakash, Prashant, Gautam, Dheeraj-ji, Powar, etc) for their meticulous work throughout the year to keep H1 neat and tidy. It was their commendable dedication that they always turned up right on time for their work, be it any day or festival and hardly gave us any chance to complain. We must also call for a special round of applause for our Hall Manager, Mr. Prasad Matkar and Verghese-ji for helping us during all the highs and lows throughout our tenure. Their contribution to the hostel functioning is absolutely invaluable. Lastly we wish to thank the H1 residents for giving us a chance to serve this hostel and for making our stay in IIT a memorable experience.

Before signing out, we would once again like to request all the H1 residents, current and future, to use the valuable resources like electricity and water judiciously. We must always remember that what we take for granted may not be even available to others.

From the desk of Mess Council

Mess is the place where food is served and food is essential

for survival. So the responsibilities of the mess council are perhaps the toughest in any hostel. Even the smallest of issues, invites loud reactions from the inmates. Also managing the mess workers is another pain in the neck. We decided to join nevertheless and tackle problems as they come. And so we have a story to tell.

When we took charge, situation of mess was far from proper. So our first task was to improve the status of the mess. It took us around a month to regain discipline in menu, working of mess, workers shift, etc. Later we were faced with inflation related issues. So, after careful analysis we could find some drawbacks in the then existing system. So firstly, we introduced a card system which helped us in regulating the consumption of food & in turn to maintain the mess bill in spite of inflation. Also we modified raw material purchase system which helped us buy commodities of daily use at lower prices that helped to reduce mess bills by a reasonable amount. Similar initiatives were taken up in optimizing

consumption of non-veg dishes. Maintaining weekly stock register,

daily count, wastage register and monitoring rebate

register also helped us to control

mess bill.

D e c i d i n g the mess menu

was a very tedious task. Maintaining a menu

that satisfied every inmate from every region was very difficult. But regular polling helped us to reduce disputes about mess menu. We introduced seasonal items, new vegetables, salads, new chat/fast food items, cold drinks in summer, various kinds of sweets, wheat bread etc.

Due to change in institute policy, H1 mess was privatised in the later half of the academic year.

The council faced tough times during this process. The initial task included formation of a tender document, meeting with the various bidders, inspecting their establishments and ensuring that

Page 26: Anubhooti - Indian Institute of Technology Bombayhostel1/downloads/anubhooti...mess table, each one of you would have had some experiences to take away from your stay here at H1. Should

our concerns were given proper attention by the hostel co-ordination unit. After the finalization of the contractor, council had to ensure proper handover and stock audit of the mess. However, along with the G Sec., all this was done smoothly. A grand farewell party was organised for

the mess staff.

The council along with many other things faced a lot of criticism and even a hunger strike. However, like the saying “the show must go on”, the council worked relentlessly to ensure that their inmates get delicious and healthy food.

From the desk of Sports Council

A healthy mind resides only in a healthy body.

With this as our motto and inspiration, we took charge of

the sports affairs of H1 and immediately got working. To begin with, a lot of follow-up was done. A new pool table and new s o p h i s t i c a t e d gym equipments and weights were procured immediately. Also an intra-hostel cricket tournament “Googly” was conducted in May and was a big success. The start of the new academic year brought along with it a new set of unforeseen challenges. The whole structure of sports GC was revamped. On top of it, with most sports stars of H1 passing out or shifting to other hostels, the council was left with the task of identifying new talent from amongst the new inmates of H1. So we set about this task seriously and with 5 players making it to inter IIT camp, we believe that we have succeeded in this task.

This year H1 participated in 12 sports GCs – badminton, tennis, table tennis, squash, water-polo,

volleyball, board games (carom + chess), volleyball, cricket, football,

basketball and hockey. We especially take pride

to state that H1 made it to the quarter finals of water polo and hockey.

Many players made it to the

round of best 16 and further, in badminton,

carom, chess and table tennis. Also, H1 participated for only the second time in hockey GC since its inception.

Back home, a new basket ball court was constructed near the volley ball court. With this, H1 is the only hostel in the institute to have its very own full basketball court. Also, high quality acrylic boards were acquired for the same. New lights were installed at the footer ground as well as the volley + basky court and all the power hungry, short living halogen lamps throughout the hostel were replaced by the brighter and more energy efficient metal halide lamps. This has increased the enthusiasm of inmates as now

they can practice even at night. The gym is now up to date with the addition of pull up bars, weighing machine, weights and associated accessories, the new sophisticated multi purpose exercise machine,

bench press and twist machine. The old and dilapidated TT rackets were replaced by new high quality rackets. The cricket kit was made complete with the addition of new protective gear and a bat. New poles were installed at volleyball court. Also an entire hockey kit was procured with specialised sticks for different playing positions and protective gear. Towards the end, with IPL fever catching everyone, another intra-hostel cricket tournament – HPL was conducted. It was an unprecedented success, with participation of 10 teams.

As mentioned earlier, 5 players from H1 made it to the inter IIT sports training camp. Krishnan S (cricket) even made it to the team. The others are Abhijit Joshi (table tennis), Munniappan N (hockey), Russell Q and Praveen (volleyball). We hope that this number increases

in future.

From the desk of Computer CouncilThe 2009 -10 was a very

interesting year to be in the computer council

of Hostel 1 as a lot of changes happened for the best, in that year.

Before get into that, let us explain how things were and the journey forth, to how things are now.

W h e n we first got the reins of C o m p u t e r Council, the situation was as follows.

The computer room had four computers, most of them not working properly due to hardware defects. People who wanted to use the net after 12 am (due to LAN BAN) were seen with their laptops inside. The ethernet cable structure of Hostel 1 was prone to a lot of problems. In fact there was also an infamous 23:40 LAN Shutdown problem that persisted for many months.

IP conflicts were on the rise, computer bombardments would result in many people losing connectivity. To add a moot point, there were only two of us to handle it (Though we should have had another Computer Secretary as per

constitution norms).

Our Journey starts here. The first thing

we did was to fix the existing

computers in the computer room. And a new server

machine was bought. But we

were back to square one because of the older

machines, which were so bad, that we could not repair them beyond a point.

Then we along with other hostels residents met the members of CC(Computer Centre) and MLC(Middle Layer Committee). Luckily a new draft was underway. Two major developments saw the coming of a new age in the computer council in the various discussions.

The first was the network revamping. It was decided that the old Ethernet cable network would be replaced. The plan was to include software controlled switches with VLAN capability, 1 Gbps possible connectivity, new

Page 30: Anubhooti - Indian Institute of Technology Bombayhostel1/downloads/anubhooti...mess table, each one of you would have had some experiences to take away from your stay here at H1. Should

cables in the infrastructure and 2 ports per room. We ensured that this transition went as smoothly as possible and after 3 months to till date we have a very robust wired network in Hostel 1. We also fixed the loose ends as far as revamping was concerned and after it was done, we haven’t received a single complaint as far as network is concerned. Also the infamous 23:40 LAN problem vanished due to this!!

The second development was the sanctioning of new computers in Hostel 1. The CC agreed to make the procurement on the condition that the MLC members are allowed to inspect the rooms and discuss how many new computers are required and the security arrangements be looked after. We and the MLC members came to a mutual agreement that 9 computers (Including the server) should suffice for our room, given the space and necessity constraints. So we called the carpenter and decided on the cabinet designs. After 3 months, the cabinets were ready (We are making this sound easy, but there was a lot of misunderstanding here and there which we had to handle). Then we spent our time setting up the machines. This was no easy task as we had to set up each and every machine and set up the NIS, NFS, FTP servers on them. Also

the security arrangements made it difficult for us to easily repair the machines if the need arose. Still we persevered and after setting up NIS logins, attaching USB cables and cleaning the room, we got an excellent computer room.

In addition to this, we procured a few tools to maintain the machines including a star screwdriver set, LAN Tester, SMPS tester etc.

So in this one year, a lot of problems that existed were solved and we ended up on the greener side of the grass. A few things we could not do due to lack of time were to hold a LINUX awareness session and to scrap the old machines. Hopefully this will be on the new council’s agenda.

So all said and done it seems quite a lot. There were times when we had to choose between our academic work and council work. However with a sense of enthusiasm and responsibility, all went well as far as we were concerned.

Wishing the new computer council the best during their tenure.

the most powerful being on the planet.

Elemental and other forms of magic called Ninjutsu are a common tool that are frequently seen in the series in addition to a variety of other techniques. Hell, there is even a technique that allows you to bind an opponent by manipulating his shadow of all things. But this is not alone what

makes Naruto so addictive and so interesting. In the rest of the article, I’ll explain as a die hard Naruto fan why I like Naruto and why it is rated as #1 on the web. And I’ll do my best not to spoil anything.

First of all it is the amazing technique or Jutsu list. It is very very large with different characters having different techniques. The techniques may be physical fighting(taijutsu), illusionary techniques(genjutsu) and magical techniques(Ninjutsu). Each ability has it own strengths and weaknesses. Some weakness/strengths are obvious. eg. Earth beats water beats fire beats wind beats lightning beats earth. Its like a rock – paper – scissors kind of a thing. Not all are elemental however, some involve basis hand to hand fighting with some spice. Some techniques are mind blowing including the Sharingan(an eye technique) but to tell anymore would be to spoil the story which I wouldnt want to.

Next is the amazing character development. Not just Naruto but the other characters are also developed quite well. In fact it was revealed that Naruto was not the most popular character of the series. With different characters having different abilities and when you see how they mix and match up, you get to see some class A

fights. In some cases you will see a character having strengths that almost make him invincible and you ask yourself “Man how the *#%$ are they gonna take him down?”.

Then later on a weakness is revealed and you get to see how they take the character down, how they discover his weakness and what strategies they employ etc. This alone keeps the viewers hooked for a while. Also as it is a

weekly series, only a little of the story is revealed at a time keeping you in suspense for the rest of the week.

Bad guys really aren’t that bad in Naruto. You get to see how they work and yes, you sometimes sympathize with them. Yes... you actually do show sympathy. The author likes to show the Bad guys in shades of grey(and not just black) and except for a select few, most are really just misguided individuals. But the philosophical discussions that take place are mind boggling

“In fact the toughest thing for an author to do is to probably kill his best character”

and really force you to see things from a completely different angle. This leads to even more interesting fights as you sometimes don’t want them to happen. Believe it or not I was once sad, not because a good guy was killed but because a bad guy was.

Good guys die. Why would this be interesting? Because in Naruto, good guys dont always win. In fact the toughest thing for an author to do is to probably kill his best character. This happens many times in the series. But the battles are generally epic and worth the cost. This is to show that such things will happen in the Naruto universe and in a shinobi world.

The Strategies: I have already covered this, but the strategies and games played by the characters on each other is probably worth mentioning again. Even seemingly inescapable situations are escaped from using some presence of mind and alertness.

This alone keeps you hooked onto the series. In fact there is a character called Shikamaru who specializes in strategies. I cant reveal anymore, sorry, but to me, this character alone kept me hooked on.

The different plot twists are also equally appealing. And that adds to the charm of the story already so well portrayed. And the

series continues.

Well having said this much, “Why wouldnt you like Naruto?” is a better question. Unfortunately I cant think of a reason. You have to watch it to see if you like it. If you dont like it, well... I dont care. I like it and thats important. For those interested in reading the manga, you can read it(along with zillions of other Mangas) on www.onemanga.com. Every week it is updated. For the anime, there are sites which give it for free as well. Also note that it is more fun to watch the Naruto Anime in Japanese with English Subtitles. Makes it seem authentic.

For the fans: Even I am waiting for Pain vs Naruto battle on the Anime. Its gonna rock.

perennial problem of poverty?

Drought is, beyond doubts, among the more serious problem this country faces and drought ‘relief’ almost equally beyond question, is rural India’s biggest growth industry. Functions of drought ‘relief’ involve laying roads, digging wells, sending out water tankers, building bridges, irrigation channels, repair tanks. And could you imagine the money that goes into this industry? ‘The rich state of Maharashtra spends over 2000 crores on emergency measure in combating drought and on other water-related problems. During 1995-1996 over 5000 crores were allocated to deal with the water-problems of only 3 districts of Orissa – Kalahandi, Balangir and Koraput.’ [1] (Some of the poorest districts of the country).

The system of classification of drought prone areas according to Government is done by a scheme called Drought-Prone Areas programme (DPAP) which includes hundreds of villages like Kalahandi, Balangir, Koraput etc. On the other side, analyzing the rainfall data in these areas, you will be astounded to know that regions which have

Quite contrasting to all the articles contributed to the hostel magazine,

I felt like sharing my views on some national issues more useful than boasting about my work as the hostel council. I will consider my work discerning, if it awakens even a single soul to put his country before his region and religion. This article is a result of some of the books and editorials I have gone through on this topic.

From the age of liberation from the British Raj followed by Congress rulers’ “License Raj” Indian economy has come a long way crossing myriads of barriers and ‘licenses’ to become one of the fastest and consistently growing economies in the world.

Nevertheless, before we could get any far along with our optimism – problems like double-digit inflation have hit us. And looking beyond the ‘Headlines’ and ‘Breaking News’ of the present day TRP - crazy media; gives us an actual insight about the impediments in the path of India.

The paramount question that India faces today: Have our economies taken heed to the

their average rainfall well above the ‘normal’ rate have still been enlisted under the DPAP programme. For instance, in the past 20 years lowest rainfall Kalahandi has been 980 mm, which is way above what some districts get during ‘normal’ monsoon months. Annual rainfall in Lonavala seldom falls below 3000mm and still it is enlisted as a DPAP block. Same goes with some of the poorest districts of the country. And the credit for enlisting such blocks, goes to all the ‘stakeholders’ who ‘fight for the cause’ ensuring they get a fruitful share of the profit. The Contractors and Politicians who take up ‘the cause’ (to get a better share of the benefit) by complaining that – ‘our block got far less funds than the others, the Collector is ignoring us’, thereby embarrassing the Collector, who pitches in for the state government (also to get a better share), which in-turn pitches at the Central Government for more funds…thereby completing the circle or rather hierarchy of fraud.

Equally farce is the Public Distribution System announced by the Centre which spends lakhs of crores in providing subsidised amenities – which after having reached the hand of the poor crossing innumerable hurdles, becomes a source of income to the poor, who sell it at a price of

just few rupees more than what it cost them – came to be known as ‘subsidized rice income [2]’. Apart from this, the poor have been chased by the development in the name of Dams (which could seldom manage to generate not more than few tens or in rare cases hundreds of MW), mining projects etc.

Since 1951, about 26 million were displaced by various projects out of which 40% are Adivasis, with false assurances of providing them a better livelihood. For instance, Chikapar – a village in Koraput District of Orissa has been thrice chased in the name development amidst false assurances of rehabilitation. The impact of such migration which deprives the scores of families of their livelihoods has only increased their dependency on loans, leaving no money for medical expenses. ‘Today, one in two Indian children is malnourished, the world’s worst rate’ [2]. Tuberculosis in India is killing two persons every three minute, nearly 1,000 every day [3]. Over three-fourths of all the tuberculosis cases that exist at any time world- wide are in this country. [1]. Infant Mortality

Rate (IMR) figures indicate India among the first 30 nations out of 250 nations participated in the survey [4]. There are more poor in India today than was the population of the country in 1947

give us a trivial image of unending woes of India’s poor. Though the percentage spending of GDP in such areas has increased over the years, these woes have remained unanswered in successive budgets. Only then will the meaning of India’s ‘growth’ be complete when it will fight its way out of the quagmire and consider ‘Inclusive growth’ as the paramount objective. And it alone cannot be achieved without its

citizens becoming socially responsible, and feel fortunate enough to the country, which gives you an opportunity to serve; because as Swami Vivekananda says: “The social worker should never believe that

she or he is actually improving the world, which is, after all, illusory. Service should be performed without attachment to the final results. In this manner, social service becomes karma yoga, the disciple of action that ultimately brings spiritual benefits to the server, not to those being served.”

This article addresses only one of the several problems faced by the nation today: poverty, but we are one billion strong people, and imagine the revelation that could be brought if each of us, take up a

[1], yet the government celebrates the swift decline of poverty.

Primary education in the rural areas has seldom shown any sign of improvement. The actual gap between SC/ST literacy levels and those of the non-SC/ST population grew worse till the end of 2000. The all-India figure of literacy among Dalit women is just above 10%, which is about 8% for tribal women.[1] Fewer SC/ST students (which dominate the India’s poorest districts) are enrolled in the first place, but their drop-out rates are even higher. Of non-SC/ST students nearly sixty of every hundred enrolled drop out in classes VI-VII. For dalits that figure is seventy and for tribals, eighty. So those who most need an education largely get filtered out by class VII [1], and still we find Government boasting about the achievements of reservations, which have over the years splintered the actual purpose of reservations by politicizing it. Rather than ensuring that truly disadvantaged actually imbibe the fruits of primary education which is every citizen’s right according to Article 45 of the constitution.

“The social worker should never believe that she or he is actually improving the world, which is, after all, illusory.”

I believe everyone of us learnt the proverb - “The pen is mightier than the sword” way back in our elementary school days. And this creature used to turn up now and then in our history textbooks in chapters like Renaissance, French Revolution and many times in the Indian independent movement as well to cite examples where fiery literature formed the basis of revolution.

Internet traces its origin to the 16th century. According to urbandictionary.com the statement means the following - “The pen is mightier than the sword means a pen (literature) can cause a change in the public opinion on a large scale peacefully, whereas, though

a sword can change a person’s opinion by force, the result is temporary and unsatisfactory.” But the author feels that there is much more to this proverb than just this definition. So he (no gender bias intended. I am a boy and hence the ‘he’) would like to share some of his ideas with the universal intellect.

As far as the citation of examples in historical texts are concerned, they are in accordance with the definition stated above. But there are other strange situations where this proverb fits perfectly. However it may not

ANUBHOOTIimagined what would happen if the pen itself falls in the wrong hands? The author is afraid that it already has and the results are being felt all around. But firstly who are these “wrong hands”? They are none other than the class of neo-journalists (this is how the author terms them). All biased and ignorant, these people have created ruckus and confusion and chaos all around. Armed with a pen (implies newspaper, magazines and TV journalism), these people

constitute a singular community which is responsible for needless pain to countless of people everywhere in the world. And there is no escaping them as nothing is “mightier than the pen”.

A few examples should make the allegation clear. Let us first take up sports issues. It is very well known that extreme and needless criticism

comply with the definition. An IITian would agree that he/she is at IIT because luckily the “pen” is mightier than the “sword” (read political or other external influence or threats). Similarly, to a local Don’s son, the college examiners pen (often the one with red ink) is considered more powerful than the biggest and scariest knife of his father. In both these cases, we are nowhere considering any change in opinions of any kind. Yet the phrase fits perfectly as claimed.

But apart from this, the author feels that there is a whole new dark and hidden (and more relevant for the current scenario) meaning to this ever popular proverb. It is accepted beyond arguments that the pen is indeed mightier. But have we ever

“It is very well known that extreme and needless criticism has affected adversely many sports players”

ANUBHOOTIhas affected adversely many sports players. Take the case of 2008 Olympics hockey qualifiers. Indian team played very well but lost out in the finals narrowly. Newspapers all over the country started bitching about the team. But in all of this pandemonium the real reasons for failure were never discussed as the critics were ignorant fools who did not know anything about the game and consulted the very people actually responsible for India’s non-qualification. Result - India lost one their best coach ever (he resigned) and since then the team is not able to reach the level they had achieved two years back. All this due to ignorant and unmonitored journalism. Let us look at another example. If somewhere in the world, communal riots or natural calamities take place, the media is suddenly charmed by this opportunity. All the news media are full of it. And the descriptions are so graphic that many people are exposed to needless trauma. But this is nothing compared to what is done on-site. The mourning victims (already in a traumatised and tragic condition) are interviewed and asked horrid questions like - “how do you feel about the loss of a family member?” by these metal hearted people on the pretext of “bringing reality to public”!

In fact a question intuitively comes to Tsar’s mind - is this is any

different from terrorism? If you are holding any position of repute or are popular in public, then you are vulnerable to these pen terrorists who can defame you anytime anyplace. In fact people may have already started taking up defaming contracts like contract killings. And above all there is nothing much you can do to stop the pen. So this, the author feels, is the dark and hidden meaning of the proverb which, he believes, has come into prominence especially in the last decade. So how does the intellect react to this? The author eagerly awaits the answer.

Another Disclaimer (!) : The author in no way is against the mass media. He is only disappointed at the misuse of its power by a few.

stone-age to the renaissance to the modern period. The history of scientific progress is filled with such questions and a lot has been written about it. But as with everything, asking why questions also has a limit, especially when it comes to science. Because at some point of time the why questions push the answer away from science and towards Philosophy. For instance repeated why questions about physics would finally lead to the question “Why Universe exists?”, which unfortunately is not answerable by science, at least for now and is the domain of religion and philosophy.

But, doesn’t it point out that why questions only push the limit of science like in the previous example? Yes, but only if the right people ask that question, i.e. if I

The core of science is introspection. As Kipling’s poem summarizes, asking

questions is the fundamental way to improve thinking abilities. The questions of where, what, when and who, are concerned with information enrichment. The how question allows to understand a flow of an event, a process, or a thought. But it is the why question that stands foremost in the exploration of the rationale and reasoning behind an understanding. That is why most of human beings’ intellectual achievement come out of why and its complement why not.

The Dilemma of Why:

There is no need to illustrate the whys and why nots that humans have asked, from the

ANUBHOOTIhave to ask ‘Why Universe exists?’, it should be after I understand the answer to how, what etc. for the same. If not, it would only yield an answer that is same as received by why questions that politicians throw at their opposition parties.

So when do we stop asking why? And how does it matter if unqualified persons ask why?

When do I stop asking why?

To answer this question we need to introspect how does why

question improves a person’s knowledge. When a person asks why, say to understand a new concept, he/she tries to map it to his/her existing knowledge. It is beautifully put by arguably the greatest science teacher 20th century has seen, Richard Feynman, in the series of short lectures on science, “Fun to Imagine” (available on Youtube). Feynman remarks to a question on “Why magnets attract?” that “If you are physics

student, I can explain it based on some fundamental theories, but for a layman, it is impossible for me to explain magnetism based on what you already know. Sorry! You just have to accept that it attracts due to some force, that’s all”.

So I need to stop asking why, the moment there is a need to learn more, to understand the answer to my question. This comes by experience, but examples are aplenty. Like in case of educational

systems, we have these ideas of “prerequisites”. For instance, a PG course will have a UG course as a prerequisite and so for a person to ask why question in a PG course, he/she should have understood the UG course. Hence the moment to stop asking why follows.

Simply put, people need to be qualified to ask why. What qualification depends on the type of why question.

Epilogue:

Kids ask lots of why questions and the elders don’t know how to answer them based on what the kid currently knows. So they either give an arbitrary belief system based answer (like folk tales, religious beliefs etc.) or would shut them up. As a grown up intellect, it is important to tell the kids that they have to learn more before understanding their answer to their why question and give them direction towards learning such prerequisites. We should not shut up the kids, but rather we should know when we should shut up ourselves.

PS: Article inspired by Feynman’s explanation in the “Fun to Imagine” series and author’s introspection of bad and good question.

Krishnan Srinivasarengan

How does it matter?

How does it matter if unqualified people ask why questions? It creates bad impression, sometimes on the person asking question, sometime the one answering the question. First to the person asking questions: If he/she continues to ask why beyond the above said limit, then a knowledgeable crowd will only look down at the person.

Not able to know when to stop asking why questions is usually attributed to superficial thinking abilities, that the person doesn’t want to dwell deep, but rather just graze the top.

Second, to the person answering the questions: He/She would try to give answer based on some prerequisites which the person asking question doesn’t have. This will continue to prolong the why question. Not many people have the capability to identify the validness of a why question, like Feynman does. Hence, in this case, a not so knowledgeable crowd would look down at the person answering the question.

If the discussion is one-to-one, then the discussion will drag until one of them gives up, invariably thinking that the other person is wrong.

can’t reach. But could it spurn popularity of a sport? I don’t think so. It is rather due to the versatility that cricket offers that people play cricket and make it popular. Wait, did I say versatility? Isn’t that cricket requires a huge oval ground to play or that it requires exquisite equipments which on a man resemble a warrior going to the battle field ? No. If you leave those who have grown up playing cricket only in big lush green grounds with well laid pitches and practised inside 3 sided mosquito nets, others would recall at least 10 different forms of cricket that they have played in their life.

Exquisite equipments and big ground? Rethink:

It is well known that, in India, the so called “tennis balls” are used the most not for playing tennis but for playing cricket. So much so that there are “tennis balls” manufactured exclusively for playing cricket. Indians respect Tradition, so we have left the name

Prologue:

Let’s accept. Cricket is the most popular game in India, at least for the sake

of this article. But is it possible to imagine that in a still developing country like ours, that a posh looking, celebrity filled, infrastructure hungry and equipment wielding sport as the most popular one? It is well known that the cricketers are making forays into arenas like advertisements which are the stage for actors and models and this pushes up their financial rating. And all these give an illusion that cricket is in the league of elite games (like golf, pool) far beyond the reach of common public of this country. Or is it so? As a person grown with cricket all around different forms, I beg to differ, even in my whimsical times, like when I was writing this article.

Some attribute this popularity to watching cricket on TV. Agreed, that thanks to many wonderful schemes (like the free TV scheme by the TN government), the idiot box has reached places where even water, food and clothing

cricket with their appropriate balls (e.g. Baddy cricket). And if not anything we have our palms which could act as bats for most type of balls. I remember the childhood days when we hunt for bats and end up looting the firewood stock, nor can I forget the bat we made for our own, carved out of a wooden scrap lying on the road side. Long before the mongoose bat that Hayden used ‘for the first time’, I have used mongoose, raccoon, rat, mouse, beaver and similar bat species. Yeah, may be my sixes were never farther than 25 meters, but Hayden cannot claim to be the first.

The ball:

Are there balls beyond tennis/rubber and cricket balls (beyond those ‘pink’ balls that MCC is planning)? Practically infinite, I say. How can we forget those weightless, gravity defying plastic balls, which can be hit so well that it makes you feel like Yusuf Pathan. Then there were those cork balls, which resemble sober and calm, but can hurt as much as a cricket ball. And even the ball need not be actual spherical rubber stuff but something that is small enough to be hit for a distance by the so called bat. Very many different candidates come to my mind. I still have vivid memories of playing in the streets of Madurai with the Coconut tree trunk as the bat and Hing ka dubba

of the ball with tennis. Along with a bat, we can take to any place and start the game. In narrow lanes between houses, in the balcony and inside the house (not inspired by Dhoni), inside class rooms (to impress class mates), on the road (especially with the next door beauty watching), between two wings in a hostel (Yay!), tennis court, hockey ground, and so on (yeah, include cricket ground). During one of my visits to a hilly village near Kumily in Kerala, I found that cricket was played on a barely flat surface, where the slope was more original and truthful than the mythical slope in Lord’s pitch. The bowlers had to literally run down the hill climbing down and up several meters during an over. Not just hills, even the beaches are not left out, for it gives a great opportunity for people to show off their diving skills.

The bat:

What if we don’t have a cricket bat, which might be expensive to many people? No worries!! All that is needed is some structure with enough width and height and can make balls run in all directions. It can be made of wood or steel or iron or cobalt or nickel or gold, doesn’t matter. Then there were those writing pads which became bats in the class during the recess time. There were the racquets of tennis, badminton, so as to play

ANUBHOOTI

One of the main reasons for cricket being popular is because it falls under the category of Calvin Ball. As with Calvin ball games, it doesn’t get constrained by rules. Wait, aren’t there bodies like MCC, ICC regulating how cricket is being played? Heck, who cares? Not even BCCI cares, then how can you expect the Indian public to worry about them. We can change the rules at will to suit the climatically, geographical, political, horizontal, and vertical and many other arbitrary conditions. Think of this great feasibility. Depending upon a variety of factors, like the number of people available, the type of equipment available, the kind of place, the amount of time, you have a version of cricket. And the rules of the game generally depend on who argues best and who has the power.

What is a game of cricket if it doesn’t have fights about rules. Most people find it joyful to spend more time arguing about rules rather than actually playing itself. You start the game with bare minimum rules and the rules for sixes, fours, wides, noballs, wickets, catches are argued upon as the game goes by. Hence there are multiple strategic breaks like in IPL, just that these breaks don’t have boring commercials rather than interesting fights.

This freedom from rules gives

as the ball with the electric post donning the role of stumps. In fact, for a long time my highest score in a cricketing innings was hit when the ball was a rubber toy stolen from our neighbour’s kid. Then there are always ‘quick to make’ paper balls (rolled paper), which most often are made out of the Exam question or answer papers and form the vital part of the cricket played inside the class room during the recess time. The list here would go on.

How about stumps? Any set of wooden sticks held up with stones, an electric pole (even if the street dog has marked its boundary there), wall paintings (of stumps), cooldrink tray, a chair, an array of bricks and many other such innovative reusuable structures can form stumps. So the next time you say that cricket requires exquisite equipments and infrastructure, think again.

Cricket is a Calvin ball game:

(Calvin ball is a fictitious game invented and played by Bill Watterson comics’ characters Calvin (6 year old kid) and Hobbes (Calvin’s pet tiger). Calvin hates to play the typical sports filled with rules that constraints your joy and creativity. They want to play games where rules can be changed dynamically so as to suit people, especially Calvin himself so that he could win.)

catch, you change rules to have one-pitch catches. If you can’t at all run, then remove runs from the rules and make the number of balls a batsman bats without getting out as the score. It’s so flexible, you see. Given the different versions of roles that people can play in the team, sometimes you wonder how they can ever be part of a team. For instance, how can we imagine people like Venkatesh Prasad doing the roles for India when they can’t even bat against a 6 year old bowling or field a slow moving tennis ball. But they did, because of bowling excellence.

Other forms of cricket:

Is that all, you ask? No, I say. If everyone goes off and you are all alone, you still needn’t lose hope. Open up your computer and start playing for Dhanier, Tenhelker, Sehway. EA Sports cricket apparently doesn’t have the rights to use Indian players’ names and hence has some above mentioned completely unrelated names. Though Sachin Tendulkar might have hit the second two hundred in an ODI innings (after Belinda Clark), there have been innumerable number of quadruple centuries that my friends have hit against hopeless teams in EA Sports cricket. And not to forget those other wonderful versions of games like Anil Kumble cricket,

cricket the ultimate joy to people master games with specific rules. For instance, the worst player in the regular cricket played in Hostel-1, would be the best player in the box cricket played in the same place. As Calvin would say, “Down with the rules”.

Who can play cricket?:

Cricket offers a good balance between the ultra fast paced sports and the ultra slow paced ones. It’s slower than those “you blink, you miss sports” like the legball, and it is far faster than those “games played outdoors”. As with most sports, cricket also is beyond the segregations of region, religion, caste, community, species, genus, family, etc. But unlike other sports cricket fits everyone in the league i.e. there is a place for everyone in some form of cricket or the other.

Let me give an example: Can you imagine to play a sport when your leg is injured? You may say golf, but I consider golf as one of those “games played outdoors” rather than a sport. Here you spend most of the time moving around huge lawns on some kind of lawn mowers rather than ‘playing’. So all sports will ditch you, but cricket won’t. You become a keeper and make a rule to rule out runs behind the wicket. While you bat we will have a bye-runner.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t

cricket’s popularity, it is necessary to note that a lot of comparisons have been made largely to make fun and nothing really serious (except may be about golf). I have been part of the various club and institute cricket teams over the last 14 years and have had an urge to write this for years based on what all have I seen. And also I have enjoyed being part of and playing Football, Basketball, Hockey at various levels and do appreciate and understand those sports well. So it is best to take the article lightly. Signing off for now,

Alan Border cricket etc., apart from those coming in different mobile phones.

And even if the Electricity board plots against you and cuts the power, even if you don’t have any equipment to play cricket, you still can be with cricket. For this gets us to one of the simplest, purest and easiest form of cricket: “Book Cricket”. All you need is a decent enough book and may be a pen and paper for scoring i.e. if you bother to add score. It is suspected that the term ‘’bookie’’ for those who are involved in gambling in cricket comes from book cricket. For you can easily mark those pages with ‘0’ and ‘6’ and open those pages as you wish to suit the need of the player. For instance, after watching India loose the 1992 World Cup match against Australia by just 1 run, I resorted to book cricket and made India thrash Australia by more than 400 runs, with even Venkatapathy Raju scoring a 50.

Epilogue:

The next time you see an enthusiastic chap walking along the corridor practising a shot without a bat or bowling without a ball, you will realize the impact of this sport. Unlike other games you don’t even need to play cricket to be with the cricket. It is that simple and that flexible.

Well, I don’t want to get into the long patriotic speech of the kind which goes on blaming forever and suggests nothing concrete. The point is that we are force to learn our history as told by the foreigners. So the history might be manipulated; at least the one written during the British Rule. What we learn or read today is based upon the English texts based on original Indian texts. Historical texts are mainly regional Indian languages or what are known as PRAKRIT languages. But there is a whole lot of our documents are written in Sanskrit and very few people understand the language. It is the mother of all Indian languages. Ashwagandha”. Many news of such kind often appear in the newspapers and we just forget about the news after reading it. This is our attitude towards our heritage, though we pledge in our school-days that “I am proud of India’s rich and various heritage”. And that is not a wonder, because in the British Rule, several Indian generations were forced to think the way British wanted us to think, the reason was simple - we were slaves and they wanted to continue ruling us. British strategy for education in India was based on the some principles. One of them lies in Lord Macaulay address to the British parliament on 2nd February 1835: “I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old

As an example you may visit the site of Kyoto University of Japan or say that of Heidelberg University of Germany.

Now one may ask, what is the use of all this? Everything boils down to “slave-mindedness” as I would like to call it. And the immediate effect is evident: in form of “patents”. Imagine USA claiming patent for a theory which originated here. The same thing happened with Ashwagandha, and a few years back it happened with Turmeric or Haldi. So we awake only after something disastrous happens. In this respect I remember one more incident quoted by Jairam Ramesh, our Environment and Forest Minister for States. As he said we need indigenous solutions to our problems. If we depend on others then it is clear that they will try to cash such

preserved in the Sanskrit but also astonishing evidences of scientific studies in India are in Sanskrit. Clearly it is necessary to look at the available texts in Sanskrit for the knowledge of scientific heritage. And such work is going on in the very institute that we are part of, IIT Bombay. The centre is called CISTS - Cell for Indian Science and Technology in Sanskrit.

The research at the centre is mainly in the areas of Astronomy and Grammar of Sanskrit and many interesting things have come up with the research; e.g. the MADHAVA Series. We are familiar with the Taylor’s series which expresses a function at a point in terms of values of function and its derivatives at some other point. Now this is a thought provoking concept in its own respect. But a special case of Taylor’s series was proposed by Madhava, an astronomer from Kerala: the series for sine function. It’s now formally accepted internationally and you can search Google for the same. This is just one instance. It is due to the centres such as CISTS that this is possible. The other important organisation is Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) which is a collaborative project of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This library is mainly for the alternative medical sciences including Ayurvedic, Unani

we follow certain things from other countries. We as the learners of science should analyse the history of India for scientific traces before others do that and tell us. And let me be clear : I am not saying that we should follow the traditions blindly; I am not against development anyway.

opportunities. e.g. few years back, Indian paddy fields were blamed for excessive methane emissions, methane being a more dangerous greenhouse gas than CO2. Our scientists then had to disprove that thing. Now that is just one case. And it is good that we disproved it. But such an intellectual attack having vested interests would be quite common. And unless we develop a different mentality, these cannot be defended. If we bring the rich heritage that is embedded in various texts and think indigenously then only this can happen.

many leaders who fought against injustice and cruelty, and all of sudden we are now having an acute shortage of them?

Let me tell you what I think have happened. We became greedy. Earlier people had respect and concern for our values, we cared to help others, we valued honesty, we valued self-sacrifice and all of these now seems to be replaced by ignorance, greed and self-indulgence. Most of us are just too busy making money, having a good life and think everything else not concerning them can go to hell! The only reason that our political structure is disarrayed today is because the educated people have shied away from it, people don’t care enough about it. This has given

way to all the goons to enter politics where they can strive successful ly. Then it is not a big surprise to see such people

Let’s start with the question, “Why does everyone lately refrain

from taking responsibilities?”. I have seen a general notion among the people that politics is a “gutter” and try to keep distance from it as far as possible. But, shouldn’t we take a moment to think before we start mocking or blaming about the corruptness or incapability of a politician. All of us are waiting for one good person, one person who is selfless, one who will improve our political structure, one who will rid us of our miseries. In short, one who will clean this “gutter” for us? So, where can we find such people? Has, Indian soil stopped producing the brave hearts like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Bhagat Singh? No, I don’t thinks so, it hasn’t. Those people are right here, amongst us, maybe even you. But then what happened in last 60 years since independence, which has brought about such a radical change, wherein when we earlier had so

educated ones should step up and take up the responsibility to develop developing India.

Speaking of taking responsibilities, it reminds me of tough time we had in motivating people to bear the hostel level responsibilities. It is the time for electing new Hostel Council but unfortunately no nominations are being received. As one of my friend correctly pointed, “How can there be a post without work?” If you feel that taking a responsibility will distract you from your studies, then I must say you are so wrong. Taking a responsibility teaches you to become self-reliant, managing your time effectively and most of all helps you to build your character. These are invaluable things which are cashed on longer runs so I say to all my readers don’t be myopic in your vision.

It is really a shame to watch so many educated people in India just taking off every year, in search of new life abroad. But think of those people who have stayed back for the sake of the country. What would have happened to India had they also left it stranded. What would happen if we didn’t have army men guarding the borders? What would happen if we didn’t have highly skilled doctors in government hospitals, working at skimpy salaries? I am scared to

Very much the reason, the institute can boast of events like PAF (Performing Arts Festival), Mood Indigo, Techfest etc. which are, easily, the forerunners in their respective leagues when compared to their contemporaries. One of such amazing concepts is the Institute Football League (IFL). It is a tournament for encouraging football lovers and giving an opportunity to players, managers and spectators a common platform to celebrate the sport at its highest level. The format is quite similar to the other premierships and the champions league. Eight most popular clubs in the world take on each other in a round robin fashion. It usually is organized in the spring semester after the Inter-hostel General Championships. All aspiring managers and team owners use this opportunity to identify talent and sketch out their strategy for the auctions. All registered players have to pay a minimum amount for their jersey replicas. At the auctions, every registered player is bid for. Bidding prices vary from 1 for newcomers, to 450 odd for the famous inter-IIT team players. Teams are usually as big as 20 - 25 players so that at least a playing eleven can be made available on any given day.

Once teams are formed, the manager forms Google groups and/or sms groups to inform and update his team about practice slots and scheduled fixtures. He also analyzes the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses beforehand and accordingly instruct the strategies and formations during the games. It is also crucial to make the 3 compulsory substitutions during the IFL specified time durations of the game. Each half is 25 minutes and includes a 5-10 minutes break making it an hour for every game. There are 7 match days with 4 games scheduled per day so as to finish just before PAF.

the religion or something, I would advice them to think maturely.) It is said that he did not know his son Ganesh that well. On the fateful day when he was returning home, Goddess Parvati had gone for a bath (or some similar work). Apparently due to lack of doors at her house or for a similar reason, she asked Ganesh to guard and keep all visitors at bay till she completed her bath/work. So, the obedient son sat outside the house with a ’Gadaa’ (mace) to keep an eye for the visitors. When Shankar Bhagwan came home, Ganesh, not recognizing the person, refused to let him in. Shankar Mahadev was enraged and in one stroke killed the ‘meddlesome’ boy. After this, when Parvatiji made him realise what he had done, Shankar Bhagwan admitted his MISTAKE and brought back the child to life by fixing the head of an elephant on his body. (Keeping the Indian Penal Code in mind, Mahadev Shiv can be booked for murder as well as poaching. I still wonder why the innocent elephant had to be killed for Lord Shiva’s folly.) Now, Shankar Mahadev is not a human for sure (unlike Shankar

Surprised? Agitated? Find it boring?

If you have these kinds of feelings, then I would advise you to not make premature views.

As children (and in many cases, even as adults), we were always told (mostly by our english teachers), that “To err is human; To forgive is divine.”

The first part of the proverb is often given as an example to people who (apparently) make mistakes and are ready to accept it. It is also used, by some very smart people, as an excuse when they commit a blunder. The latter is often quoted as an epitome of greatness when someone is really angry on someone or is in a mood for revenge.

However, I think that the whole thing is quite the opposite.

Let us take the example of our Mahadev, the God of Destruction, Shankar Bhagwan. (Disclaimer: These thoughts are not meant to be demeaning to Hindu religion. I am quoting known incidents. So to those who find these as an insult to

he should have forgiven the child for failing to recognize his hitherto elusive father rather than cruelly

behead him. Again our s c r i p t u r e s are filled with many acts of

punishments meted out by the God, who is supposed to forgive. Compare this with the case of human beings. Once a Human forgives someone, he/she never thinks of punishing him/her eventually like God. So, isn’t forgiving more an element of the human domain? At least this what I think. All theories or conjectures are incomplete without stating the assumptions made. Here I have only assumed the literal meaning of proverb and have tried to make only literal correction. Also, I consider forgiving as a great act (no two thoughts about it) and erring as undesirable. And lastly, I do not, in any way, claim to be a non erring or all forgiving person. (That was for those who draw a character sketch of people from their writings and expression of thoughts.)

Conclusion: If what I have

Mahadevan). But he did commit a mistake, which by all means (I am sure people will agree) was a BIG one. We also have heard about Indra, the king of Gods, who attacked Hanuman by a... (Guess what?!) MISTAKE. (There are many tales about Indra’s mistakes). We also find many incidents in our scriptures about God’s mistakes. So erring, instead of being confined to the set of humans, can be safely thought of as a part of the bigger universal set comprising of humans, Gods, demons and all other creatures we know of. These things make me believe that to err is indeed divine, but because they are Gods, their blunders and mistakes are deliberately overlooked (They are supposed to set an example after all!). So this highlights the (apparent) flaw in the first part of the proverb.

While it is always stated that forgiving is a divine act, at the same time, we are also told to believe that everyone gets punished (eventually) by the God for his misdeeds. But hey! God is divine. Isn’t he supposed to forgive? Again taking the example of Lord Shiva,

While it is always stated that forgiving is a divine act, at the same time, we are also told to believe that everyone gets punished (eventually) by the God for his misdeeds.

“We were taught wrong english at school.” or rather,

“The Englishmen got it all wrong from the beginning.”

By the way, the author did recieve a comment which he thinks must be put up along with this article. It was from none other than our very own Makarand Kane. It goes :

“If that is your feeling about that proverb then I would like to say something:

1. The sayings like this are drawn from general observation. So rather one should say: Humans err more than Gods and seldom forgive as compared to Gods.

2. The Indian mythological stories are often adulterated infinite times before they reach to us. So it is not correct to draw any serious conclusions from such stories.

3. To err is human: Whenever you commit mistake don’t let the regret win over your self. To forgive is divine: Whenever you get angry then think twice. Revenge is bad. But if you forgive then you will be treated as divine.

The first point is to be remembered after error and the second point should be there at the

And let us soak in rain, but We are not complaining, because,

It’s still raining, We get new friends,

Whom we don’t notice, For we are busy with, Things from the sky, They climb our legs,

We drive them away, with Salt and tobacco,

And it is still bleeding, but We are not complaining, because,

It is dark and pouring outside, With the incessant rains continue,

As the stream nearby roars, We sit inside tents, shivering, And searching for a dry cloth,

For even the sleeping bag is wet, And we try to sleep, still wet,

With the wind blowing the tent off, And water tries to enter,

entrance of the fort where if you clap normally, the sound is heard very clearly far away at a hill top within the premises of the fort! Likewise from that hill top you could shout something with moderate effort and that would be heard far below down in some parts of the city! This was an ancient system of signalling. In certain places in the fort, you could speak something softly into the walls and at another end, it would be heard clearly! Probably this is one reason for the origin of the phrase ‘Deewaron ke bhi kaan hote hain!’.

The next day was a trip to Ramoji film city. The campus is a huge one with an area of 3000 acres! We first saw the use of pre- recorded/template scenes. In their demonstration was the scene from Sholay where Basanti is urging Dhanno to run faster to escape the bandits. A person from the audience was called and asked to sit on a cart without wheels but which had two sticks jutting out from the region of the wheels if they had been there. The ‘actress’ had to just hit a hypothetical Dhanno with a rope saying whatever she felt would be appropriate to urge Dhanno (like ‘Bhaag Dhanno, aaj

I had been to Hyderabad (University of Hyderabad in Gachibowli) during January’10 on a two week trip for a Winter School on Logic and its Applications (Well that shows how illogical I have been all these years that i went for a “school” and that too in logic :P). The trip was wonderful, more for the non-academic parts than the academic !! There were lectures throughout the day starting from 9am and ending at 5pm with 4 lectures on either side of lunch. Most lectures were spent either dozing off or trying to grapple with what was going on but not having much clue at the end J.

We were a group of 10, 4 from IITB and 6 from Kolkata and went around a lot. The article would further contain our field trips around Hyderabad to test out Logic.

Our first trip in the city was to the Golkonda fort, where the light-and-sound show in the evening aroused a sense of awe. After being ruled by Hindu, Mughals kings, the fort got deserted after the British arrival. There are some amazing things about the architecture of the fort. There is a place close to the

After this was a simply awesome virtual reality experience. We were taken to a small theatre for a computer generated ‘film’, which began with a view of Ramoji film city itself. The lift, from which the view was, began to ascend and we began to get a high level view of the whole campus. Suddenly the scene shuddered and we felt that too in our seats! An earthquake! Building after building began to fall from the distance and this ripple was travelling towards us. The lift was soon hit and we ‘felt’ it. The glass of the lift broke (this scene was just outstanding!). Soon the lift began to descend and it hit a water pipe which broke. And guess what --- water sprinkled on us! :D Fortunately, the lift didnt do a free-fall or else I would have had a heart fail for sure!

teri Basanti ki izzat ka sawal hai’!) and keep looking back regularly at hypothetical bandits. Another person (not in the scene) would be making one of the sticks go up and down which would essentially cause the cart to seem to be moving. And the full-fledged scene was live in front of us on the screen with bandits heatedly following Basanti riding Dhanno!

The next device was using simple instruments and tools for producing sound effects. The horse-hoofs’ sound was produced by striking plastic eggs :) Sound of thunder (for a different scene) was produced by rubbing a vertically hanging sheet of metal with another metal. Sound of rain was by dropping sand on a mike! All these were good old technologies.

they had collected lots of artifacts during their reign, now as museum.

Some interesting artifacts that we saw:

A statue which is a man from the front and the back of the same statue is a woman!

A big clock from the British times which neither works on electricity nor is its spring wound by someone. I am still clueless about how this clock works. But the interesting visual part of the clock is

that a few minutes before any hour, a man comes out from behind a door in the clock and as soon as the clock strikes the hour, the man beats a drum for sometime signalling that that hour has begun!

Finally I just made it in time to see an absolute sculpting marvel. This statue is called the ‘Veiled Rebecca’. The story goes that Rebecca was a beautiful young woman and a man fell for Rebecca and proposed to her. Her silent blushing reaction is what the artist has tried to capture. The statue shows a shy Rebecca with her eyes looking slightly downwards, a slight shy smile, with one hand to her bosom and the other slightly off

After the movie ended we found that the place where we were standing in the line to get into the theatre was all broken! The walls and floors had cracked, plasters had come out at places and there were pits on the floors. This wreckage seemed to be really caused by the earthquake seen in the movie. It takes a while to realise that this place is a copy of the original entry place where the ‘destruction’ was an intentionally created one! Amazzzing!

After this was the tour of the sets.

On another day evening all of the group went to Char Minar - an imposing structure right at the center of a street. The lighting and the different colours made for an attractive sight. This place is famous for pearls and there are pearl shops lining the streets. We went around looking at different types of pearls and oysters decorating the shops and bought some. After this, we had food in some restaurant and returned to Gachibowli.

Our last trip was Sahlarjung museum was by bunking a session. We could only see a little of Sahlarjungs who were kings and

A belongingness felt ... passing by her abode.. for every flower...leaf besides her hut spoke of life..

The winds swaying across the scarf that hung past the wall...

His heart throbbing faster as he stops.. There comes out she..and goes inside..having looked at the traveller..

The traveller stood silent...for the senses numbed by the moment..

Throws off hands in the air..thanking the boundless sky.

creativity? While the context of philosophy is not secluded from creativity, it gains a certain significance as it has been a potential tool in bringing a change in the mind-set of the masses. Hence the existence of various ideology based schools of thought, religions and political parties.

Philosophy relies more on wisdom. And creativity is above wisdom. It defies discipline. It defies conventional philosophies. Also it can be argued that philosophy is more of discussing ideas while creativity is more of generation and implementation of new ideas.

A question is asked, throughout the ages gone by during which Homo Erectus evolved to Homo sapiens archaic to Homo sapiens neandertalensis to the present Homo Sapiens Sapiens - what significance did these three attributes hold for him?

The early man, or more specifically Homo Erectus, discovered fire (as biologists claim) by rubbing stones out of curiosity and achieved the breakthrough. So one might wonder, whether creativity should be held supreme

Whenever we think of India’s struggle for freedom, the man who gave the slogan “Tum mujhe khoon do, mai tumhe azaadi dunga“ comes to our mind. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose indeed put-forth an example of the power of three attributes viz creativity, philosophy and discipline combined together. As a freedom fighter he was quite creative in his plans, being philosophical gave him the vision for a free India and the discipline of the troops provided the confidence and the strength to pursue his vision.

Creativity is best described as the power of human imagination and is mainly attributed to the thinking power of the right hemisphere of the brain.

Philosophy is the study of fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.

Discipline in simple terms can be explained as following a particular code of conduct and is self imposed for the grown ups.

But the question remains: Is philosophy not linked with

A cocktail of Creativity, Philosophy and Discipline

during a Press Conference in Iraq.

The disciplined ones are the most productive ones in terms of a fixed assigned task. But a staunch disciplined person becomes susceptible to getting mechanised, indecisive when it come to out-of-box thinking, getting fatigued by the same old mundane job and becomes insensitive to the various possibilities that may exist. Abdul Karim Telgi’s discipline with minting fake currency landed him in jail.

As per IITB’s lingo , extreme designations namely Fodu for a creative guy , Maggu for a Disciplined guy and Poltu for a political/philosophical guy are used. The one who fits the equation 1/3rd (Fodu +Maggu + Poltu) is termed as God. What equation do you fit into?

Note: The author suffers form acute indiscipline syndrome and his room (Room 222, H1) is a testimony to a perfectly messed up individual. So are the views expressed. Also the author is a self proclaimed philosopher and a creative God. The author got beaten up by a mob purely on philosophical grounds. The creativity of the author almost landed him in jail at one point of time in his life.

among the other attributes for human survival. Some may argue that the concept of a family and therefore society was also the brainchild of the Homo Erectus which led to the structured modern world of human societies and of interdependence of humans on each other. Discipline, on the other hand came later in human evolution after the Cro Magnon, but it holds its own significance as it helped the early man to sustain himself and get stability.

So in comparison to our primate ancestors, what balance of creativity, philosophy and discipline do we need as a modern man (Homo sapiens sapiens)?

Creativity as a matter of fact will keep opening hitherto hidden opportunities for man. But excess indulgence in it may lead to exclusion from the real world problems. To cite an example, M F Hussain suffers from hyper creativity.

Pure philosophical minds are the most active ones when it comes to society, humanity, human rights, and for whom the adrenaline rush never falls short of supply.

George Bush got goose-bumps during a splendid display of adrenaline rush by an Iraqi television journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi, a hardcore philosopher,

First, it all starts with IITB. I loved every second spent here. After a stint in industry, this was life at full throttle, of course with the studies. First year was hell busy; we all were neck deep in assignments, quizzes, and labs. The group studies, night-outs, lecture bunks, movies in labs…. everything was such a fun.The learning experience was awesome, I was fortunate to study under one of the best faculties across the globe [in IITB lingo, profs are GOD]. Frankly everyday I did look forward to attend lectures, obviously with some excep-tions, where bunks were essential ;-) The project in the second year, was like rediscovering self :-) Loads of lab hours, hardware phase of project…all are sweet memories. And then the Lab duties, TA work (correcting & con-ducting quizzes) was altogether a new and wonderful experience. [Wonder-ful because you get to be a demi-prof ;-)]Even the new learning on the linguistic side, just in the first month I en-riched my vocabulary with ‘fart’, ‘daya’, ‘god’, ‘muchax’ etc. Now looking

back, these are essential part of my daily vocab :-)H1 [Room No 33 & then 128]: Its been a very pleasant stay here. Very reli-giously I say this, I am proud to be a part of H1. First year I was part of cult welfare team. All the festival celebrations, GCs, cult events..I enjoyed a lot. These events were kind of break-aways from hectic academic schedules, they refreshed me a lot. The most important part H1 gave me was bunch of friends, the friendship which I will cherish life-long. H1 is always very cool & natural and the life here is never dull. Sports, cult events…all these activities bonded us very well. H1 gave me an opportunity to learn our national game Hockey. It was very memorable experience to represent H1 in Hockey GC. Also the cricket, footer games were essential part of the day. In the second year, I was nominated for the post of cultural secy. Being a part of council was quite hectic, but it indeed was good learning experience. My work saw me as, PFA Secy, Dance Secy & Social Secy. Organising festivals, motivating junta for Fine Art, night-outs for Dance GCs, Anubhooti, Valfi…all are the loving memories. I would go on endlessly to express feelings about my stay here, would be very nostalgic….So to summarise, IITB Rocks !!! H1 Rocks !!!

It is not easy to write down when the mind is overflown with memories. Staying in hostel with friends has been a really wonderful experience. I cannot do any-thing but relive those memories in my minds.

I am going to miss all night parties at H1 canteen, sharing funny moment at mess after classes (specially after DMT class), fight to complete assignment on last day but finally give up and copy paste from others, playing cricket at footer ground not even thinking about MTP and so on. The best things which H1 give to me are friends for lifetime. Now it’s about to be end of my M. tech here (in case I complete my project on time) and time to leave but it’s a part of life and we have to keep moving on. I am really privileged to be in IIT Bombay. It is indeed the best institute where i could interact with the best professor and get knowledge from them. I learned lot of things from them, both technical as well as about life in general. Life would not have been so pleasing doing PhD without staying in hostel-1, apart from being nearby to the department to reach easily for the academic purpose. Its also close to the SAC to attend all the cultural programs as well. And also close to the swimming pool and ground to do exercise. This made me never to change this hostel.Social ambiance here in hostel felt like one big family. Here we enjoyed every festival with verve in a traditional way.Made lot of good friends like Debabrata maji, Rahul shukla, Brajesh Pandey to name a few. Apart from having fun outings with friends , I could get lot of knowledge from other inmates , know their cultural background through their eyes. I would be really missing this hostel life after leaving , but he memories will be very sweet. Life moves on.

I have stayed in different hostels/rooms etc. in last 9 years (suddenly real-ized that it’s been real long!!), the stay at H1 is the most special. I have some of the most amazing memories from here.. I was a part of H1 even before I officially joined. The part (/122) in my room no. will tell you that :) ... The occupants of that room, which almost everyone knows is my “second home”, Bhooshie and Vijay (these two are only the official occupants, btw. The list of ‘actual’ occupants is a long one and not to be disclosed ;-).. ) have been two of my very close friends. This hostel has witnessed many impor-tant memories of my life. I have definitely learnt a lot of things here..When I entered H1 last year, I had to handle some very crucial things along with Bhooshi, Vijay and some other friends.. We used to have night-long discussions.. I think I lost some sleep and gained some wisdom in the whole process... :-)Had a very memorable stay for about an year. Enjoyed celebrating all the festivals - a trademark of H1 ! ... The two years at IITB have shaped my life very interestingly.. I have been a RSS-swayamsevak since childhood. But I got to learn a lot more things in

these two years about our work than before. Got exposed to a totally new dimension of working with college-students. Met a gem called Manoj. I really have no words to describe him... “Jeevan ke safar me raahi, milte hai bichhad jaane ko..” Separation is inevitable.. but I am sure the fragrance will be forever there ... Thanks a lot, H1.. Hostel 1 Queen of the Campus, this was really second home for me.It is difficult to write in words about my memory in hostel one. This was my first experience in Hostel. I never thought about such a sensational stay in hostel. Here i laugh, cried, played, fought, organized events and danced. I will never forgot the festival we celebrated here, cricket matches in TV room and on footer ground, Ganapathy pooja, Holi, picnic and many more. H1 gave me lots of memory and lots of friends which will be ever for my entire life.

The amount of time spent in my abode here at hostel-1 is indeed most fascinating though equally overwhelming ups and downs had happened outside hostel activities.I am thankful to the anubhooti team members for giving this platform to share and reach across you some of my thoughts. I did have a wholesome blend of life here at hostel -1 IIT Bombay as a me researcher i do my share of contemplating on tiny thoughts.Invariably a thought disturbed me which asked whether my stay here at H1 is the most productive thing i could do at this given time of my life.In other words i am here just by chance, an accident. Comrades! if i have learnt any thimng precious from this nearly four years of stay then this would be the answer to this intriguing question, well i am glad i found i am not here by chance and reason is you who also shares my fate. The reason for ny conviction is to knowing you and have had a meal around you and by your table. It is the fun of sitting around those carom boards and unceasing comments on the silver screen right in front of the round table council meetings. The ever table tennis enthusiast baddy part-ners and opponents, swimming companions, reading mates and my beloved

I do not want to sound cliched by saying how i enjoyed staying in H1 etc,But what i liked most about H1 is its proximity to maths department, I used to stay in H7 for first two years and at the top of that i used a bicycle to get to my department.Well don’t bother about these skeptical looks.Igno-rance is blissful as calvin used to say.The canteen (Satish) being an integral part of H1 that makes my stay worthwhile. The timing till 2:30 AM inspired me to go to another movie.Well i do not want to go through my elaborate list of friends. The few i hold precious know or should know how simply mere words would not justify the feelings/relationships

Memories at H1/IITB

I am here at IITB for my M Tech course as a sponsored candidate. I work with State Pollution Control Board, Orissa. I am married and I hv two daugh-ters.

I came to H1 on 18th August 2008 after 1 month of joining and since then I am in Room no. 182 with my partner Sudip. Due to study after a gap of 16 years(my present age is 39), it has been really a hectic journey for me and most of my time has gone for studying only. However I have been active in badminton and those having any interest in badminton in H1 must be knowing me. I have represented hostel badminton team in both the years and in 2009-10 I was top in H1, got defeated in 3rd round of GC. Also I have been a regular late night visitor of H1 canteen where I usually take Chicken manchurian rice. Canteen has been a nice experience and some people also demand a sabji which satish and all recognise as dillip sabji, patented in my name. Overall H1 life will be memorable and will be cherished upon.

My message to all the inmates of H1 is to enjoy life, which is definitely best

Myself, Sunil Kumar, doing PhD from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering. I am in Hostel 1 since my joining IIT-Bombay in January, 2006. I was very happy to know that I have been allotted Hostel 1, as many of my friends told me that it is the best Hostel in campus. Throughout my tenure in IITB/Hostel, I met with many inmates who helped me a lot in all areas. I am very thankful to all those friends specially my batchmates Kashy-ap, Rahul, Aswani, Anshul, Nithin, Navneet, Kamleshwar, Prashant Kodgire, Vijay R.P., Vijay H., and R. Bhide. I am not listing the other names because it will be a long list otherwise. I feel that Hostel 1 has very good environment/atmosphere for study. People listen to the other inmates problem and try to solve. I never feel alone in hostel. As H1 is a PG hostel having students from all streams, many times it helps a lot to discuss in field which someone is not expert. I was part of almost all festivals organized in the hostel premis-es. It is very difficult to get such homely environment. Playing with comput-er is my hobby. Whenever I find time, I try to explore various software like Adobe packages, Corel etc (even hardware some time). In future, I want to opt for a career which allow me to do research and teaching.

I was nominated as mess seceretary in june 2009 the i decided it is time to pay back to hostel that i got in previous year from hostel-1.During my work i was supported by mess manager ,hall manager and all inmates. In hostel i came in contact with many new people like Sachin,Tej Vohra,GPS Tej,Nitin Soni,Abhijeet and many more and they became my good freinds.I will always miss the evening cricket that we played at fotter ground. At the end i am very thankful to providing very special memory in my life which i will never forget.

My self ..tried to explore all for the first time in my life (apart from studies), for which H1 had been the best place for me. I feel I could not have done all of them with in my short drop of 2 years, if I have been in any other hostel of IITB. Thats how I kept my head in a range of different activities from sports to dance, music, PAF, Tech fest, Mood Indigo..and special of all Hostel council and Placement office. The only bad and good experience was when I was impeached from coun-cil...but that made me enter PO. The council and inmates kept moving me in all cultures of H1..HOLI, JANMASHTAMI, INDEPENDENCE DAY, VALFI etc..The things that I learnt from IIT, CTARA, H1 is proper management of TERM TIME, ENERGY, RESOURCES and MONEY..and giving preference in the same order...which will give the real success.Don’t forget that Indian people, as per vijay information (2008-09 G.Sec) >20 lakhs spent on each of us for 2 yrs. so we are in debt for this mother India. The only suggestion I can give..esp. to all IITian’s and inmates leave all your cloths of ego, regionalism and wear new fashions of Interaction, Love, spiri-tuality and patriotism..that will give all personal and social benefits...I will be in touch with H1 always..and will fulfill things I could not do esp. biogas plant for H1 mess and Alumini network of H1...H1!H1!

Anubhooti .... It is not just ‘experience’, it also refers to the feelings which have been inculcated and have become an integral part of who we are.

This Anubhooti’ reflects imprints of Hostel1 onto every resident!

This yearbook is an effort to fit ‘our anubhooti’ into these finite number of pages!
