Another important fact was the huge reduction (around 56%comparing 2002 to 2001) of aluminum products imports.

Domestic offer reduction added to this imports decreaseresulted in the lowest “per capita” aluminum consumption in thedecade (28% below that of 2001 and 55% lower than that of1998, the highest of the considered period).

Mercosur commercial trade also showed a strong decrease.Beyond the critical economical situation of Argentina during thefirst 3 quarters of 2002, the fourth showed some stabilizing inthe main factors like the rate of exchange and a decrease insocial conflicts which allowed to expect a slight activity recovery,a trend which luckily continued during the first months of 2003.

We trust that with the government change which took place lastmay and with convenient economic measures aimed to encour-age the market demand, it will be possible to revert the deep anlong recession in which we are immersed since almost five years.

Alfredo Lurati

Therefore, our sector suffered an extremely complicated situationdue to a big sales recession and economic, financial and creditconditions which prevailed during most of the considered period.

2002 showed a fall in aluminum consumption which was thelowest in the last 10 years (a 27.5% decrease in relation to 2001)following the sharp decrease in the Gross National Product.

The most important demand reduction affected extrusion prod-ucts (with a fall above 30%) because of construction sectorstagnancy and that of rolled products for packaging (carbon-ated beverages and beer cans) with a decrease over 60%which produced a market shift to other types of material suchas glass, PET, etc. in order to reduce packaging costs.

The low consumption of aluminum cans produced an increasein the recycling percentage of used cans as collecting systemkept working normally. As a consequence of the change in the relation peso vs. us dollarand also the decrease in industrial activity, this increase in thescrap collection produced a strong export trend which derived in adomestic lack of this raw material used for manufacturing second-ary alloys needed to produce pieces for the automotive industry.

Figures shown in this statistical yearbook reveal the serious situa-

tion faced by our country during 2002 in which the economic

measures that were taken at the end of 2001 derived in a

process that ended in the country’s debt default declared at the

beginning of 2002.
