Solutions for Time-Critical Remote Sensing Applications

The recent use of latest-generation sensors in airborne andsatellite platforms is producing a nearly continual stream ofhigh-dimensional data, which, in turn, is creating new pro-cessing challenges. To address the computational require-ments of time-critical applications, researchers have begunincorporating high performance computing (HPC) modelsin remote sensing missions. High PerformanceComputing in Remote Sensing is one of the first volumesto explore state-of-the-art HPC techniques in the context ofremote sensing problems. It focuses on the computationalcomplexity of algorithms that are designed for parallelcomputing and processing.

A Diverse Collection of Parallel Computing Techniques and Architectures

The book first addresses key computing concepts anddevelopments in remote sensing. It also covers applicationareas not necessarily related to remote sensing, such asmultimedia and video processing. Each subsequent chapterillustrates a specific parallel computing paradigm, includ-ing multiprocessor (cluster-based) systems, large-scale andheterogeneous networks of computers, grid computingplatforms, and specialized hardware architectures forremotely sensed data analysis and interpretation.

An Interdisciplinary Forum to Encourage Novel Ideas

The extensive reviews of current and future developmentscombined with thoughtful perspectives on the potentialchallenges of adapting HPC paradigms to remote sensingproblems will undoubtedly foster collaboration and devel-opment among many fields.
