Experience New Frontiers . . . as we continue our travels through the Romantic

period and on to the “New World” of music.

    Creatures of

    Prometheus was

    Beethoven’s only

    full length ballet

    and his first theater

    work. It is the story

    of Prometheus, “an

    exalted spirit, who

found the humans of his time in a condition of

ignorance, refined them through science and art,

and brought them to civilized manners, customs,

[and] morals.” Lewis H. Lockwood, considered

the leading American authority on Beethoven,

calls the music “easier and lighter than music for

the concert hall. [It] shows Beethoven exploiting

instruments and coloristic orchestral effects that

would never appear in his symphonies or serious

dramatic overtures.” He later based the fourth

movement of his Eroica symphony and his

Eroica Variations (piano) on the main theme of

the last movement (Finale) of this ballet.

The lusty sounds of Hungarian folk music with its

unique gypsy scale, rhythmic spontaneity, and

direct, seductive expression are next on the

    program.

Brahms offered two volumes of Hungarian

    Dances for piano duet in

    1869. These were

    brilliant arrangements of

    Roma tunes he had

    collected in the course of

    the years. They vary from

    about a minute to four

    minutes in length. They

    are among Brahms's most

popular works, and were certainly the most

profitable for him. Hungarian Dance No. 5 is a

mix of precision and spontaneity, arranged for a

wide variety of instruments. Number 5 was

based on the csardas by Keler Bela titled "Bartfai

emlek" which Brahms mistakenly thought was a

    traditional folksong.

    Composed by Liszt in

    1847 and dedicated to

    Count László Teleki,

    Hungarian Rhapsody

    No. 2 was first

    published as a piano

    solo in 1851. Its

    immediate success and

popularity on the concert stage soon led to an

orchestrated version, arranged by the composer

in collaboration with Franz Doppler. In addition

to the orchestral version, the composer arranged

a piano duet version in 1874. There is more of an

emotional theme flowing throughout the piece,

    building organically.

Following intermission, it is the influence of

Native American music and African American

spirituals that we hear in Czech composer

Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, widely

known as the New World Symphony. Dvorak had

been influenced by both Beethoven and Schubert,

and the music of his native Bohemia. But while

visiting America, he became captivated by its

music, calling spirituals “the folk songs of

America” and “the product of the soil.” Leonard

Bernstein called it multinational in its

foundations, and the symphony has proven

    popular all over the world.

    From the Maestro

    At the mid-

    point in our

    journey this

    Season during

    the transitional

    period between

    the Classical

    and Romantic

    eras of music,

    the February

    concert program

    illustrates the

    relationship between Beethoven and those

who followed. Haydn and Mozart took music

to the apex during their time. Then,

Beethoven made it possible for music to reach

the depths of our emotions and psyche.

    Beethoven’s Creatures of Prometheus was

selected to begin the program because

Beethoven is the “Prometheus of Music” and

all of the composers that followed are the

    “Creatures of Prometheus.” As Prometheus

was a Titan in Greek mythology who took the

fire from Mt. Olympus and gave it to

mankind, so Beethoven, took the ‘fire’ of his

creative genius and made it possible for

musical expression to move forward by leaps

and bounds. Our concerts this season are

truly a journey of how the fire spread and

    developed throughout the musical universe.

    Music Director and Conductor

    Piano Concert Rescheduled

Terry Readdick Sunday, March 12, 2017

4:00 p.m. Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica

Due to the disruption caused in October by

Hurricane Matthew, the piano recital by Terry

Readdick has been rescheduled. Join Mr. Readdick

on March 12th as he tells the stories behind each of

the program selections … the love lost, the passion,

the love unfulfilled, life in the European countryside.

Then listen as those stories are expressed through

music. The recital will include selections bridging

200 years of classical music from Scarlatti to a mid-

20th century Brazilian composer. Also included will

be Beethoven sonatas and works by Brahms, Chopin

    and Debussy.

Note: Tickets purchased for the October performance
