EDITOR'S COMMENTSSelling a product in the highly competitive days of

early radio had to be a challenge. After all, print wasthe major medium, as even radio had not realized itspotential for direct selling. The kind of advertisingthat saturates us today was not part of the picture.So a catalog, like Buscher's, the subject of our leadarticle, was a vital marketing tool for a manufactureror supplier, and, no doubt, the cover had to be aneye-catcher.

That must have been why the Buscher catalogleapt to mind when we were preparing Jack Gray'sHopalong Cassidy radio article for publication. It isone of over 100 catalogs in my collection, but I musthave remembered it because the cowboy graphicdid a good marketing job. Eighty plus years after itspublication, the image has had lasting effects.

Of course, the question arises - why did C.A.Buscher use this image when it had no direct rela-tion to his products? We have to conclude that hewas sold on it when the artist presented him with therearing horse, the cowboy with headphones, thelassoed letters, and the radio waves. He must haveseen this as a unique way to get the attention of hispotential customers.

Certainly, that was the goal of Arvin Industrieswhen that company made the happy connectionwith William Boyd, the actor who controlled the rightsto the Hopalong Cassidy character. Thanks to JackGray we have the story of the two versions of theHopalong design on the front of this 1950 Arvinradio. In addition, Jack is offering for sale the foilfronts in both styles to restorers of the Hopalongradios. These are not repros but new old stock -agreat find for any collector.

Great finds are a way of life for Richard Arnold.This time Richard started out to write about his RCAModel T-10-1 which he had acquired almost 20years ago. But, a 1935 ad for the Model 10-T, whichsuperseded the T-10-1 within a year, caught hisattention. Richard compares the two, accepts thesuperiority of the updated version, but remains firmlycommitted to his older set.

That kind of commitment is part of every collector/restorer's thinking. In Claude Chafin's case, he care-fully evaluates a set's chance of making it back to its

original condition before committing time to a repairjob. For the Fada Model 290C, the subject of hisarticle, he did not have to address electrical or me-chanical problems, as with other sets he has writtenabout for A.R.C. Instead, he had to deal only with thecabinet, a major undertaking in itself. He offers manygood tips and techniques that will be useful to allcabinet restorers.

Steve Auyer's article, Glow -in -the -Dark Radios,in the April issue prompted Loren Ashworth to re-mind us about his similar set pictured in the July2004 Photo Review. Though both are GE sets, Lorenpoints out significant differences. We're always gladto have an article extended to yet another level ofdiscussion.

Estes Auctions, of course, as reported so well byRay Chase, often take us to several levels in varietyand price. The Larry Flegle collection offered aninteresting variety of items from traditional radios tophonographs, military equipment, parts, and evencitizen band sets. Highlights were the numerous Scottsets, of both E.H. and H.H. varieties. The E.H. mod-els were from the chrome -plated, classic radio era,while the H.H. sets were part of the early hi-fi era.

Among the top prices were $1,600 for the E.H.Scott 32 Philharmonic side -by -side and $6,000 for aMcMurdo Silver V in a Clifton cabinet. The totalproceeds were over $60,000.

And to add to my trip down memory lane with theBuscher Catalog, an AC Dayton Radio sign in thisauction really jumped out at me. The name on thesign "J.H. Orr, Jr." took me back 25 years to a luckyturn of events that led to my attending the auction ofthe J.H. Orr collection in Opelika, Alabama. Thatwas such a significant moment in my midcollectingyears that I felt compelled to write an article about it..

We seem to be into cowboysand horses in this issue. The fol-lowing article makes the connec-tion. Unfortunately, the illustra-tions here are of poorer qualitythan usual because they had tobe reproduced from an 84 -year -old catalog. (Editor)

We've said it before - onething often leads to another in thepursuit of radio history. The foilimages of Hopalong Cassidy andhis horse in Jack Grays article inthis issue jogged my memoryabout a catalog in my archives.Of course, the search was on,and a 1923 Buscher's Radio Cat-alog surfaced.

The catalog's cover drawing ofa cowboy on his rearing horseappears on this month's A.R.C.cover because, though there isno direct connection to Hopalong,it is an interesting parallel. It sug-gests that images of dashing cow-boys had sales appeal from thevery early days of radio, to the The home of the C.A. Buscher Co. at 1219-1221 Locust Street,midcentury popularity of William Kansas City, Missouri.Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy, totoday, when collectors still seek out the 1950 Ho-palong Cassidy radio.

"BUY FROM BUSCHER"

The slogan "Buy from Buscher' heads everypage of this excellent early catalog. To excite prod-uct interest from the start, the cover artist presentsa man of action whose steed is raring to go as helassos the letters in the word "catalog." We wonderwhat he's listening to on his headphones.

Radio waves electrify the air as a backdrop to

the cover title and even under the horse's hooves.Obviously, the artist did not have William Boyd'sconcern that such a pose for the horse might beconsidered animal cruelty, as suggested in JackGray's article.

A "Personal Message" from C.A. Buscher to his"friends in the Retail Trade" introduces this RadioCatalog No. 5 extolling the products of his compa-ny, which was located at 1219-1221 Locust St.,Kansas City, Missour. Business via catalog musthave been good because this is the fifth Buscher

In it, Buscher claims to offerone of the largest stocks outsideof New York. He gives the exam-ple of 21 different styles of head-phones waiting on his shelves fororders. He also calls attention tothe inclusion of diagrams to facil-itate hooking up parts for suchsets as Atwater Kent breadboardsand A.G. Dayton products.

In addition, dealers would finda dictionary of radio terms and alisting of broadcasting stationsuseful in their transactions withcustomers. Furthermore, theycould show this catalog to cus-tomers because prices are quot-ed at list, and a separate dis-count sheet would guarantee theirprofit. One caveat is that pricescould not be guaranteed.

A 1923 TREASURE

Looking through this catalog,we were moved to say, "Wow!"What a great thing it must havebeen in to know that such a rangeof supplies and information wasavailable in the relatively earlydays of the radio industry. In ad-dition to Atwater Kent and Day-ton products, among the otherproducts offered are those ofEchophone, Busco, Federal,Atchison, and Day -Fan.

A Little Gem crystal receivingset priced at $6.50 is so easy toinstall and operate even a childcan do it, or so says the catalogblurb. Crystal sets by Kleerton, Radioceptor, Fulla-tone, Busco and Atchison are also offered. Thelists go on: vacuum tubes and sockets, rheostatsand potentiometers, variable plate condensers anddials, panels, binding posts, contact points, andswitch levers, loud speakers, antenna equipment,soldering irons, etc., etc. -a veritable radio smor-gasbord.

In today's world of instant information, we mayfind it hard to imagine how valuable such a catalog

must have been in 1923. C.A. Buscher perhapsthought only of his sales, but maybe he had aninkling of the contribution his catalog might make toradio hstory.

Hopalong CassidyThe Radio and the Actor

The image of HopalongCassidy on his white horsehas been around for so longthat it is almost an Americanicon. The popularity of Hopal-ong from the 1930s throughthe 1950s and even beyondmade him a natural to be in-corporated into the design ofa radio in this period of themedium's greatest growth.Jack Gray brings us that sto-ry, and, as his A.R.C. ad says,he has now made replacementpanel foils for the radio avail-able. The Arvin Model 441-T or"Hopalong Cassidy" radio,originally priced at $16.95, was Figure 1. The original foilfaced cabinet front shows Hoppy's horsemanufactured in 1950 using Topper with both forelegs in the air.two styles of embossed, pa-per -backed, aluminum foilfronts. One "Hoppy" frontshows his horse Topper rear-ing with both forelegs in theair, as shown in Figure 1. Theother style, shown in Figure 2,has Topper with one foot onthe ground and the other inthe air. The Topper with twolegs in the air version was theearliest design and was or-dered by Arvin on February22, 1950.

However, this front designhad not been reviewed andapproved by William Boyd, theactor who had bought therights to the Hopalong Cassi-dy character after havingplayed the role in several films.My information indicates thatBoyd felt that this pose could Figure 2. The revised design foil with Topper stand-ing with one foot in the air was approved byBoyd and was ordered by Arvin on August 21,1950. Having followed sales of these radiosfor several years and having personally re-stored quite a few of them, I believe that there

is little difference in scarcity, value, or desir-ability between these two styles today.

HOPALONG CASSIDY

William Lawrence Boyd was born in Cam-bridge. Guernsey Cc., Ohio, on June 5, 1895.

He moved with his family toTulsa, Oklahoma, in 1902, andto California around 1918.

By the 1920s, William Boydhad already starred in severalsilent films. He made his firstcowboy feature in 1931 andhis first Hopalong Cassidymovie in 1935. It was "Hop-py," derived from the novelsand pulp stories by C.E. Mul-ford, who would come to de-fine the Ohio native's career.Always dressed in black anddecked out with silver spurs,he rode his trusty horse "Top-per" and became the leadingcharacter in many "B" movies.

The "Hopalong" monikercame about due to Cassidy'sbeing injured in a shootout. InHop -A -Long Cassidy (Para-mount,1935), the first film ofthe series, Boyd/Hoppy is re-covering from a gunfight, andis asked about his wound. Hisresponse is something like "I'llmanage to hop along."

In 1937, William Boyd mar-ried Grace Bradley (his fifthwife), and at the same time,he acquired a new white stal-lion. He asked his new wife toname the horse. At the time,Grace was reading a series ofbooks by Thorne Smith, andthe series was called "Top-per." Thus, Grace asked Bill to name thehorse after her favorite book, and that's howTopper got his name.

William Boyd and Grace remained marrieduntil his death in 1972 at the age of 77. Graceis 93 and lives in southern California. Sheparticipated in the 16th annual HopalongCassidy Festival in Cambridge, Ohio, in May2004. I found that she had logged on to her"My Space" blog today (1/28/2007), while I

was writing this article.Boyd bought the rights to the Hopalong

Cassidy character in 1948. He released edit-ed versions of the films (totaling more than100 by the time he retired) to the then youngmedium of television, first through KTLA inLos Angeles and then nationwide throughNBC. Additional new episodes were shot aswell, with Hoppy's popularity increasing allthe while.

Hopalong Cassidy sagas were also on theradio from 1950 to 1952. A long -running Ho-palong Cassidy comic book series, publishedby Fawcett, added to this marketing successstory.

In fact, Hopalong Cassidy merchandisingwas more than successful and varied in scope.Pajamas, bicycles, watches, toy guns, cow-boy hats, cowboy outfits, candy bars, pocket

knives, bread, butter, cookies, milk, other foodproducts, toothpaste. wallpaper, and literallythousands of other items were produced forhis adoring public. My research shows thatHopalong endorsed some 2,400 items, manyof which are still being marketed today.

RCA Models T-10-1 and 10-TBY RICHARD ARNOLD

You acquire a particular model, and, if you're lucky,fellow collectors lead you to more information, not onlyabout that model but also about the next one. Onceagain Richard Arnold shares his discoveries. (Editor)

I acquired the RCA Model T-10-1, shown in Figure 1,some time in 1989. A friend who owned an auctionbusiness used to either bring me radios or call to tell meof some radios that he had at his storage buildings. Hebrought this particular radio to my office one day, and Iremember his saying that he wanted $100 for it. But, onsecond thought, he said, "No, give me $75 because itdoesn't work." Needless to say, he got his $75.

I suppose what impressed me the most about thisradio when I first saw it was its near mint condition. Thenext thing that impressed me was its size. Measuring19" x 161/2" x 131/2", it is a very impressive looking radio.The Model T-10-1 was RCA's top -of -the -line table modelfor 1936.

While researching the Model T-10-1, I came acrossan RCA advertisement in a November 1935 edition ofRadio News magazine. The title of the ad is, "AsThings Ease Up." I suppose that it was referring towhen the hard times of the Depression (1929-1939)were "easing up."

The ad goes on to say that you should get an "up-to-date RCA radio, with all RCA Victor's new and strikingdevelopments in radio engineering." The ad asks, "Isyour present radio an old war-horse? Battle scared andworn from too many hours of playing? If you are likemany people, that's the case. Yet programs are moresparkling than ever... and the newest radios give a liftto even the finest programs." The RCA T-10-1 musthave been one of those sets.

THE RCA MODEL T-10-1

The RCA Model T-10-1 is a 1936, 10 -tube. 3 -band,superheterodyne that covers the frequency range of540-18,000 Kc. This very large table model tunes thedomestic, foreign, police and Amateur bands. Back in1936, it sold for $69.95.

The set has five Bakelite knobs including a combi-nation low frequency tone control and power switch, atreble tone control, a volume control, a tuning knob,and a range selector. The range selector has threepositions with red, green and white band indicators.Red is the standard broadcast band (540-1800 Kc),white is shortwave (1800-6,000 Kc), and green is Am-ateur, police, weather and aircraft (6,000-18,000 Kc).

The RCA T-10-1 uses an 8 -inch electrodynamicspeaker and delivers 8.5 watts of "undistorted power."The grille cloth on my set is original.

The tuning drive ratio is variable by means of apush-pull clutch arrangement. A tuning ratio of 10:1 or50:1 may be selected. The tuning dial also includes avernier pointer for logging and fine-tuning stations.

former capable of operation on a wide range of linevoltages.

The tube complement consists of metal tubes, ex-cept one -a glass 5Z3 full -wave rectifier tube, whichwas housed in a black oerforated metal can. RCA washaving problems developing this tube, and the metalversion was not ready when the new line of radioscame out. Perhaps the Type 5Z3 tube in a can was anattempt to hide the fac" that it was not one of the newmetal tubes.

The other tube types in the radio are the following:two 6F6 push-pull power output tubes; two 6C5 audioamplifiers; one 6J7 oscillator; one 6H6 second detec-tor and AVC; two 6K7s, one as an RF amplifier and theother as an IF amplifier, and one 6L7 first detector.

COMPARING MODELS T-10-1 AND 10-T

The October 1936 All -Wave Radio magazine con-tains an article which compares the Model T-10-1 withthe later 1937 Model 10-T, shown in Figure 2. The claimis that the two models were subjected to technical andaccurate laboratory tests in order to illustrate the de-gree of engineering advancement made in a year andthe increased value per dollar in the 1937 model

Having reviewed the Model T-10-1 in a previousissue, the magazine justifies comparing it with theModel 10-T on the basis of their both being tablemodels, employing the same number of tubes. Theyalso sold at around the same price and were designedto fulfill the same general reception requirements and

employ much of the same mechanical design. Howev-er, the Model 10T has a more distinctive appearance,in the magazine's opinion, (not mine).

ADVANTAGES OF THE MODEL 10T

The 10T has the advantage of an electron -ray tun-ing indicator and an improved dial mechanism havingratios of 20 to 1 and 100 to 1. Although the tone controlis the same on both models, the 1937 model has a 2 -position selectivity switch or "Fidelity Control," notpresent on the Model T-10-1.

The circuit diagram of the Model 10T shows that ituses the following tube types: a 6K7 RF stage, a 6L7converter, a 6J7 oscillator, a 6K7 1st IF amplifier, a 6K72nd IF amplifier, a 6H6 detector & AVC, a 6F5 audioamplifier, a 6E5 tuning Indicator, a 6L6 audio output,and a 5Z4 rectifier. This 1937 model also has a built-inantenna coupler and wave trap. One improvement ofnote is the use of a 6L6 as a beam power output tube,instead of the push-pull 6F6.

The Model 10T provides continuous coverage from530 to 60,000 Kc, plus the new X band coverage from150 to 410 Kc, well over three times the frequencyrange of the T-10-1. The 10T also has a provision forelectric phonograph operation; the T-10-1 does not.

The 10T has two new Magnetite (special iron -core)IF transformers, whereas the T-10-1 has but one aircore type. This feature produced better selectivity. Thenew 6L6 power beam tube supplies almost as muchpower as two 6F6 tubes in push-pull.

One point of interest here is that the chassis used inthe 10T is also used in the Model 10-K, a console.However, the console has the Magic -Voice feature notfound in the table Model 10T.

CONCLUSION

I'm sorry to say, but it is clear that the additional newand striking developments in the 1937 RCA Model 10Tmake it superior to the 1936 T-10-1.

Nevertheless, the RCA Model T-10-1 is a beautifuland well-built RCA radio. It seems to be hard to find. I

have been collecting radios since the summer of 1985and up until a few years ago when it began to show upon eBay, mine was the only one that I had ever seen.They are a prize and sought after by many collectors.

Well, after all of that, I will have to say that I am stillproud of my "very distinctive" looking RCA T-10-1.While the 1937 model 10T may have more whistlesand bells, the T-10-1 is still one of my favorite radios.

I keep my T-10-1 in my radio room where I can seeit all of the time and where I can play it on a regularbasis. Heck, it picks up all of the stations that I want tohear. I sure am glad that Mr. Carpenter brought it intomy office that day back in 1989.

METAL TUBES

Metal tubes first appeared in the new Allwaveline of General Electric sets at the end of 1935.They were manufactured by RCA for GeneralElectric and others. Six of the original 10 -tubetypes made were the 6A8 as a pentagrid convert-er; a 6C5 as a detector amplifier triode; a 6D5 asa power amplifier triode; a 6H6 as a twin diode; a6J7 as a triple -grid detector amplifier; and a 6K7as a variable -mu, triple -grid amplifier. Four morewere Types 6F5, 6F6 and 6L6, and 6L7.

Some ads that I have come across say thefollowing about the new metal tubes:

"Sealed in steel - Made like a finewatch." "Metal tubes - The sign of an up-to-date radio." "1935 goes down in radio history as offer-ing a new, revolutionary and permanentimprovement - Metal Tubes - Alreadyadopted by the vast majority of radio man-ufacturers. Progress cannot be stopped, getwhat you want -a new radio -a ModernRadio -a radio with Metal Tubes!"

Metal tubes were already on the market inEurope for some time prior to the American tubeannouncement. The Catkin tube was made inEngland. It had a different construction, howev-er, and the American tubes were considered agreat improvement.

Refinishing a Fada Model 290C CabinetBY CLAUDE CHAFIN

The 1937 Fada Mod-el 290C is a 9 -tube, 3 -band radio. It featuresvernier tuning, a tuningeye, selectivity switch-ing, off -on tone control,and a hi-fi 12 -inchspeaker. Photos of therestored console areshown in Figures 1, 2and 3.

I found this radio inBoone County, Missou-ri. It had been cornplete-ly recapped with an am-ateurish restoration job;in other words, it playedwell but looked pitiful.

I had never seen thisradio here in the Mid-west, so I thought I

would buy it and restoreit to showcase condition- all new lacquer, ton-er and black lacquertrim, just as it had beenoriginally.

THE PROCESS

Refinishing a consoleis quite an undertaking.There is a lot of surface area to strip off andrefinish. But, if you are up to the task, then startby stripping it in sections; i.e. top, sides, etc.Use 150 -grit sandpaper to get down to thewood, and use a wooden block so you don'tsand unevenly. Once the old finish is removed,allow the cabinet to dry for 24 hours.

Check for cracks, missing veneer, or poorglue joints on and under the veneer. A host ofdifferent glue clamps is handy to have at thispoint. (When I am out collecting, I always lookfor glue clamps.) Be sure to sand off anyexcess dried glue.

The next step involves a sanding sealerwhich seals up the pores in the wood prior toapplying the lacquer. Otherwise, the lacquerwill soak right into the wood. This is how you

get that "piano finish."Use 0000 steel wool toget the dried sandingsealer smooth. Thenapply the lacquer andtoner. Once the lacqueris applied and dried, buffit with a buffer polish toget that smooth glossyfinish. Since this radiohas black lacquer trim, Idecided it would be agood idea to do the blacksections first.

Always avoid usingoils and furniture polish.They will soak into thewood and the lacquerwill trap it there forever- not to mention turn-ing everything white.

REPLACING THEGRILLE CLOTH

I tried to restore theset as close to its origi-nal state as possible.The only thing not origi-nal is the grille cloth. Theoriginal cloth was too fargone to restore, and I

didn't like the originalcloth style anyway. I

used a swirl type repro-duction Zenith cloth forthe new grille cloth.

Centering the swirls tothe grille is a tough job.

To do this, I reinstalled the grille board withoutthe cloth to see first how it centered up. I drewa line around the outside so I could see wherethe edges were after I removed it again. Be-fore removing it, you should mark on the backwhich edge goes to the top. (This is importantlater.)

Now it's easy to see where your cloth is to beglued down. Use a fast -tack adhesive verysparingly and a bit of Elmer's Glue around theedges. Once the cloth is glued down and dry,take a pencil -pointed soldering iron and burnholes through the cloth where the screw holesare located. This prevents the screws fromsnagging on the cloth or even small fiberswhen installing the grille board. Burning thoseholes is very important. If you do it any other

way you're asking for trouble. (I learned thehard way.) Your mark on the back tells youwhich edge is up before installation; if you got itbackwards, the screw holes won't line up right

Glow -in -the Dark Radio Follow -UpBY LOREN ASHWORTH

Steve Auyer has a great article in the April2007 issue - Glow -in -the -Dark Radios. The rea-son I am writing is that I have a GE Model 501ivory clock unit, shown here in Figure 1, one ofthe several mentioned in Mr Auyer's piece. Hefeatured the GE Model 64, shown here in Figure2. My radio appeared in the Photo Review sec-tion of A.R.C. in July 2004.

The Model 501 appears to be identical to theModel 64, except for the cabinet, which is adifferent color, and has a different design andspeaker grille arrangement. Also, the Model 501doesn't have the hour marks on the inside diallike the one in the article, and it has Romannumerals. Using a flashlight in a closet, I con-firmed that only the hour and minute nands glowin the dark.

The ivory -colored knobs appear identical onboth sets. GE must have purchased only ivory -colored knobs.

Also, there is a subtle difference between thehands on the two models. A close look at thehands on my clock reveals that they are ratherdark, not at all as light as those on Steve Auyer'sset. Also, under a magnifying glass, the glowcoating seems uniform - sort of the consistencyof fine sandpaper, but no spots. The Romannumerals and dark tipped hands are evident inthe photo.

Estes Auctions - The Larry Flegle CollectionBurbank, Ohio - December 9, 2006

This auction was primarilythe collection of Dr. Larry Fle-gle from the Atlanta, Georgia,area. It was held at the ExpoAuction Center in Burbank,Ohio, which apparently will bethe site for all future Estes auc-tions. The collection containedmany Scott, Silver -Marshal,and McMurdo Silver radios.Viewers ought to have haddark glasses handy to offsetall the chrome -plated chassison display.

Other good items were forsale as well, including niceHam gear, advertising andphonograph items, and theusual good assortment of bat-tery and 1930s radios. A largeselection of novelty radios wereoffered. Some of the betterones were scattered throughthe main auction while manyof the later transistor modelswere dealt with at a side auc-tion that I prevailed upon mygood wife to record.

Additionally, there was an early auction oflow value goods that seems now to be a regu-lar event at Estes auctions. This is a good wayto deal with the bottom -end stuff that is alwayspresent and a lot of fun, but does not warranttaking up time at the main auction.

During the main auction, some of the papergoods were sold "choice" and I could not recordthem. Also there were several side auctions in

There had been a snowstorm on Thursdaypreceding the weekend that left several incheson the ground, and the weather was quite cold.Nevertheless, a good crowd turned out andhung in there until well into the afternoon. Veryfew additions came in on Friday evening orSaturday morning.

Since this was a few weeks before Christ-mas, one might have assumed that some col-lectors would be buying themselves an earlyChristmas present, but surprisingly, there werequite a few bargains left here. Perhaps theywere there to purchase the Scotts, Silver-Mar-shalls and McMurdo Silvers and passed up theother items. Maybe they held back the moneyin order to do the family holiday shopping. Still,the prices of these Scotts and others havebeen falling over the past few years, as moreof them have come into the marketplace. Itseems to be a very good buyer's market.

Whatever the case, it was wonderful to seeand touch so many of these grand old radios,especially the very rare and seldom seen Mc -

Murdo Silver Masterpiece inthe Clifton console that soldfor $6,000. I never seem to beable to judge the mood or elec-tricity of an auction crowd, andthis one was particularly diffi-cult to gauge. Anyway, it wasa pleasure to be in the compa-ny of all these fine high -endradios and I hope that the newowners get as much pleasurefrom them as Dr. Flegle proba-bly did.

I recorded about 550 lotsand stopped note -taking at 5P.M. with maybe another 20minutes to go. The total sale ofthe main auction was some-what over $60,000, not count-ing the early auction, the sideauctions, or the novelty auc-tion. The three featured brandsaccounted for nearly 40 per-cent of the main auction sales.

A separate novelty radioauction of 73 items totaling$475.50 was recorded by EdithChase. A number of noveltyradio items, apparently thehigher -value ones, were alsoincluded in the regular auction.All novelty radios are combinedin the auction listing.

where the sold items are normally accumulat-ed during the main auction. This arrangementwas certainly more pleasant than standing inthe rain as has happened at one or more of theAuction Barn sales. It is basically a "stand up"or "walk around" auction, and there were about75 lots offered that sold for a total Df somethingover $550. I have no: provided a cetailed list ofthe sales.

The early auction was the place to be if youneeded parts sets, or if you like a challengingrepair job, or even if you have a bit of openstorage space that needs some radio detritusto fill it in. While the average lot sale price wasabout $9, two-thirds of the sales went for $5 orless, and 19 lots scld for $1. Sometimes lotswere combined, and I noted four radios thatsold as a lot for $1 cr 25 cents each. The mostexpensive item, a McIntosh tuner that drew abid of $90, must have gotten in this group bymistake. Anyway, a lot of 'Lin and a good wayto wa-m up the crowd before the 'big stuff' wasrun across the auction block at 10 A.M.

The A.C. Dayton Ra-dio sign that was sold atthe Estes auction of theLarry Flegle collectionbrought back memories of25 -years ago - an auc-tion of the John HerbertOrr collection that I attend-ed in Opelika, Alabama,in November, 1982,

Although for nearly 20 -years prior to 1982 I hadbeen picking up an occa-sional radio at a New En-gland antique shop or fleamarket, my collection wasvery modest. The year1982 changed that - Ibecame hooked for good!

By 1982, I had sub-scribed to several radiocollecting publications, I

had found the book, Vin-tage Radio, the "bible" forbattery set collectors,and I had made contact with several local radiocollectors. Attending my first radio meet - theOctober, 1982, AWA Conference in Canandaigua,New York - was the beginning of my conver-sion. It was the first time that I realized tnat lots ofothers were interested in collecting old radios,too. Walking the flea market, seeing all thoseradios, viewing the contest exhibits, and talking toother collectors was an amazing expenence.

Then, I noticed an advertisement for an upcom-ing auction in Opelika, Alabama - over 900 oldradios and phonographs were tobe sold. Sometimes luck is onyour side, and this time it was. Ihad a business trip scheduled toGeorgia just before the auction,and a side trip to Alabama waseasy to fit in.

I arrived at the preview andhad plenty of time to peruse thevast display of old radios and pho-nographs. And, I met and talkedwith collectors, all of whom werenew acquaintances then, but I

still know them today.I had targeted one item in the

auction to buy -a Federal Mod-el 61. I was successful! To take ithome, I wrapped it in rug pad-ding, fitted a box around it, andchecked it as baggage on myreturn flight to Boston. Fortunate-ly, it arrived in fine shape. Myrecords show that I paid $650 forthe Federal 61, and it is still a

featured set in my col-lection.

It is interesting to lookat the change in valuesfor some of the sets overthese last 25 -years. Sur-prisingly, many sets areworth only what they soldfor in 1982, cr even a bitless. For example, in theOrr sale, an RCA RadiolaIII sold for $6C' and a Cros-ley 51. for $100.

Today, some of the rar-er sets are worth two tothree times their sellingprices in 1932 when anAtwater Kent 50 sold for$450, two Model 10breadboards for $350 and$400, and a Model 12breadboard for $700.

Very rare sets are sell-ing today for five -times ormore what was paid in

1982 when an RCA Radiola VIIB sold for $600 anda Western Electric CW-938 sold for $1,000.

I will never forget the experience of my first bigradio auction, what I learned there, and the won-derful collectors that I met. Only foul years later, Ibegan publishing this magazine, now in its 23rdyear, and my collection now numbers over 800items.

PUBLISHING RIGHTS. Unless other arrangements are made: (1) All received materials (ads, articles. letters, correspondence.e-mail, photos. artwork. etc.) become the property of k R.C., may be edited, combined with other material, published, and will notbe returned. (2) For all received materials, A.R.C. is granted publishing and reprint rights in all forms of media including the monthlyprinted magazine, Internet, etc. (3) Publication is subject to approval by A.R.C. and to time and space constraints.

MAILING OF ISSUES. U.S. subscribers can receive A.R.C. by First Class or Periodicals mail (Periodicals is the way mostmagazines are mailed). The mailing of First Class copies is staggered with faraway copies mailed before local copies. Non-U.S.copies are mailed on the first day. Periodicals copies are mailed on the last day. Mailing dates change each month, but mailing isusually completed by the 27th of the month. First Class copies usually are received by the 5th of the month; copies by Periodicalsmail, by the 10th.

ETHICS. No person involved in the production of A.R.C. is to act on any information in the magazine until the first delivery dayafter local copies are mailed.
