IOctober Chapter Meeting I

Meeting attendance was more or lessback to normal with 25 present, (28 if weinclude the 3 Rescue Randy dummiesseated right up front). Visitors indudedDan Lloyd and Dad Tim Eriksen, alsoAnthony Ferrario who fell asleep beforehe had a chance to display his rubberstick model in the Show & Tell session.
Maybe next time we will move the S & Tearlier in the evening. Tim Eriksen joinedSAM 27 later in the meeting. Tim is ac10ckmaker from Novato and has justrecently got into modeling (see S & Tlater herein). Welcome Tim, we hopeyou and Dan become regular attendees.It turned out that Dan was a fom:er
student of Rocco Ferrario and they hadn'tseen each other for several years. Alsoattending were Stu Bennett of theOakland Cloud Dusters, NFFS/SAM 27'sFred Terzian and Bill Vanderbeek who
never come empty handed, but alwayswith raffle goodies. Thanks fellows!!

Prez Rod Persons advised he still has
plenty of FREE carbon fiber towavailable. Phone him prior to a meetingand he will bring it, or --- send him aSASE and he will mail the requestedquantity.
Stu Bennett announced that Indoor Flyinghas been arranged at the Cow Pa~ce forSunday, November 12. Any indoor modelmay be flown. The featured events arethe Bostonian, both 7g and 14g. Flyingstarts at 9 AM and into the mid afternoon.
Those flying are asked to contribute $10toward the rental fee.

JR orr REPORT
Rocco reported that with the newsemester just starting things are prettywild at school, the family's temporarydomiciling while their new house is beingbuilt, and activities related to his FlyingPhysics business have all slowed downhis efforts rela!j~lo actLv~y Qfomonngthe Jr orr program. Rocco hopes to getmore going soon. Prez Rod expects toschedule a future meeting at Napa inRocco's classroom which should attractsome of the Juniors. Rod also advisedthat Rocco's model/education efforts had
been written up in the Newcomers columnin the November issue of AMA's Model
Aviation magazine. Check it out.
Prez Rod reminded us that at the June
meeting we allocated the $345 collectedfrom the Silent Auction of much of Gene
Mathieu's legacy, to be used to further theJr orr Program. Members are asked tothink about ways this could best beaccomplished. Additional funds for thispurpose are expected from the Rafflebeing arranged of the Citabria Pro modeldonated by Bill Kast.
OLD BUSINESS
Crash & Bash
CD Ed Hamler reported on the verysuccessful 19th Annual Crash & Bash
held two weeks prior at the SchmidtRanch in Elk Grove. The weather was
PERFECT and good thermals for thosesmart or lucky enough to pick the righttime and place. There were 48contestants, only 3 less than last year,
which was an all time record. Event
entries totaled 151 and 374 flights wereposted. Eut Tileston was the winner ofthe 1995 Hooks Memorial SweepstakesTrophy. The CD recorded 3 Crashes, 1Bash and 2 Flyaways. The spectacularBash belonged to Eut Tileston with hisClass A Weathers Westerner which,
during climb out in the f1yoff of theAntique event, shed the wing and part ofthe cabin disabling the engine shutoffresulting in a power dive to the side of theroad just beyond the Schmidt Ranch. Nota pretty sight. Our condolences to Eut.One of the f1yaways was Don Bekins'Ramrod which he launched without the
Rx being on. The FF climb out went toan estimated 2000' followed by a perfecttransition to a large circle driftingdownwind. The model was later found
with only minor damage.
SAM 27, All of the contestants, and otherattendees thank Loren and Miriam for
their legendary hospitality, the fantasticFriday and Saturday dinners and themanicured grounds and flying area. Aspecial thanks to Mary Hamler and theother ladies who, with Miriam, efficiently
and graciously ran the food service. Ohyes, we can't forget the expert hamburgerflippers, Rocco and Rod. And last but notleast our unflappable Contest Director EdHamler who is one of the most organizedpersons on the face of the earth.
To show our appreciation to Loren andMiriam, Mary and Ed Hamler suggestedthe Club authorize the purchase of anadditional industrial size chafing dish anda new electric roaster (all of the meetshosted have just about done in the oldone). This proposal met with unanimousapproval. The presentation will be madeduring the John Pond Commemorative onOct. 21-22. Prez Rod proposed making asmall floral gift to each of the ladies whocontributed so much. This was approved;Rod will take care of this.

Financially we made about $300 less thanlast year but still came out ahead about$700. Following are the approximatefigures in each category:

Christmas Party It was agreed to hold anXmas Party again this year and Sunday,December 3 was chosen. Arrangementshave been made to again use Papas'Taverna for this event. Because of floor
plan changes we will not be able to reservethe upstairs glass enclosed deckpreviously used, but instead will be in thedownstairs ballroom which will give usplenty of room. Last year we had about 40members, family and friends attending.Lets make this bigger and better. We willhave the usual raffle of mainly nonmodeling prizes and the participationoptional special (White Elephant) rafflewhich most seem to enjoy last year. Thosewho wish to participate should bring awrapped gift in the $5-$10 range. Anumber is given to each participant and
~llel1 his/her nl!mber is drawn a gift isselected and unwrapped. 'Ihe nextnumber drawn may select a wrapped gift or"steal" one from a prior winner. Theperson whose gift is "stolen" selectsanother wrapped gift and the raffleproceeds. A separate notice appearselsewhere herein.

to inG!ude !r-!.the newsletter. Suggestipn~_included tips on modeling, stories ofparticular models, reminisces of boyhoodmodeling, historical notes regarding SAM27 including past Crash & Bash Contests(Ron Keil?). Think about it guys and sitdown and write. You will have your ownbyline for posterity!
1/4 A Texaco Postal Meet Ed Hamler had
received the trophy for this 1995 Contestwon by Sam 27 (for the third time!). Detailswere given in the last A-F. Ed proposed,that (World Champion) Dick O'Brien be thecustodian for the next year. This wasapproved and the handsome trophy nowresides (we assume) on Dick's mantle.

COLLECTAIR A November 18 (Sat.)special tour has been arranged for SAM 27members and guests, at SteveRemington's ColiectAir Aviation Art Galleryand Museum of Aircraft Recognition atReid-Hillview Airport in San Jose. A writeup on Steve's unique establishmentappeared in the May 1995 A-F. We aretargeting 10 AM for the beginning of thetour. Carpools are encouraged. A map tothis facility appears below.
1996 Crash & Bash Raffle Prize John
Hlebcar offered for the Club's purchase anR/C Zipper model he had purchased fromthe Don Parmenter estate. This beautifullyconstructed model is finished in red, whiteand blue and is powered by an essentiallynew Torpedo 29 engine. John has $350invested in the model and a NIB radio and
is offering the package to the Club for$275. It was agreed that Don Bekinswould test fly the model and a decision
O&R T-Shirts and Decals We only soldone T-shirt at the C&B. To date we have
sold about 2/3 of the gross ordered,leaving a profit to date of about $250.Future sales are 100% profit. Efforts willbe made to have the 50 or so remainingavailable at Contests and Collectos. Weare completely sold out on the O&Rdecals. Information regarding a possiblereorder is expected to be available at thenext meeting.
1/4 A FF Nostalgia Meet A date for thefourth Tim Younggren 1/4 A Memorialmeet was discussed. This will be the finalmeet for 1995 of this now annual event. Itwas agreed that it could be flown at theNCFFC #4 meet at Waegell Field on Nov.5. Those not able to make it to WaegellField may fly at the Lakeville field on Sat.,Nov 4. Depending on the wind, the 2 min.max (10 sec. run) may be reduced to a 11/2 min. max (8 sec. run).

Rick Madden showed his new field boxmade from a combination stool/toolbox
purchased at Orchard Supply. Rick hasmodified it to include provisions for a 12 vbattery, tool and part storage, and anelectric panel.
Don Bekins showed a Weathers Westerner
he had purchased by mail in an estate saleby a Canadian SAM Chapter.Unfortunately it was only after receiving themodel that Don discovered it was built to
7/8 original size preventing its entry in thePure Antique event, and limiting it to ClassC OfT. Don recovered the fuselage withSAMSpan to improve rigidity and made anew fiberglass cowl using the balloonmethod (Don says this method needs morethan two hands). The 40 glow engine wasreplaced by an Ohlsson Sideport and Donreports it is a very good flyer.
Messerschmitt Me-17 made from Model
Builder plans as was Ken Low's which tookfirst place in the 1/2 A Scale Texaco eventat the recent SAMChamps. The original1925 full size aircraft crashed into a tree
during takeoff, apparently due to the lack offOlWard visibility. Ray says the model wasvery difficult to fly until he added about 1/4in. washout to the outer wing panels. Rayalso showed how he had modified the
battery tray for one of his transmitters topermit the use of 1800 mah cells whichgives him practically all day use withoutrecharging. This is particularly useful when

The rear of the fuselage wastapered to reduce tail weight and allow ashorter nose moment by moving the wingforward, and the fuselage cross memberswere changed to diagonals resulting in avery rigid structure. Wing modificationsinclude a change to polyhedral and anundercambered airfoil. All the model
needs is covering to make it ready for theNov. 5 Meet at Waegell.
Fred Terzian passed around a souvenirbook containing many photos and resultsof a 1949/1950 Meet at Dallas, TX. Also acopy of the 1993 NFFS Year Book whichfeatured many color photos of models andcontestants.
Collectors Journal. Thanks Bill! Alsoshown was a 1/2 size Drone Diesel
purchased at the SAMChamps Collecto.The .037ci engine is manufactured by ArneHende of Sweden and is said to turn a 6x3
prop at 8700 rpm.

1996 Officer Nominations Ed Hamler
reported that in the past certain Clubmembers got together during the Crash &Bash to elect new officers. Thenominations were made and the election
held while the nominees were flying. Thenewly elected officers were notified uponlanding. The last couple of years thissneaky procedure has been replaced bynominations and election during a regularmeeting. The Officers for 1996 are:

SHOW & TELL
Club Name John Hlebcar noted that SAM27 had no distinctive name other than
"Northern California Chapter". John hadread a book about a group of VWV2German Me 109 pilots who had formed tofly replica/ restored Me 109's for fun and inair shows. They had selected the name of"Gray Eagles" and John thought this mightbe appropriate for consideration by SAM27. Pete Samuelsen suggested "BaldEagles" might be equally appropriate. Itwas agreed we should have a contest toselect a name. More discussion next
meeting, but in the meantime think aboutsuggestions.

(Don made some minor ignitionmodifications and test flew it on Saturday,Oct. 21 during the John PondCommemorative Meet at the Schmidt
Ranch. Don was super enthused about itsperformance, his only complaint being lackof visibility at altitude.)
Bill Vanderbeek showed a product herecommends for DfT lines and pull-pullapplications. The very flexible and lowfriction line is made of nylon coated,braided stainless steel strands and was
originally intended for stringing beads. It isavailable in 7 str. (.018" dia.) and 3 str.(.015" dia.) at shops specializing in beads.Bill donated a spool of this line to the raffle
as well as a many-drawered plasticfield/parts/tool box and an Engine
World Champ Dick O'Brien showed the 1/2A Anderson Pylon he flew to first place inSAM 27's winning team in the recent postalmeet. The model was up for total of 51min. in two flights. Dick credits thecoaching of Don Bekins and theencOuragement of the others present. Hesays Don taught him the benefits of flyingon trim only.
Rav Me Gowan displayed his 1/2 A
Tim Eriksen displayed a partially
completed, self-designed, scratch built,approximately 6' span, 40 R/C sport model,his entry (or re-entry?) to modeling. Hisbeautiful workmanship is probably a resultof his c10ckmaking background. Tim willsoon be looking for a test pilotlinstructor.
