There is absolutely no lag in yachting
events for the New Year, as the
exclusive Superyacht Challenge (SYC)
kicks off from January 25 – 27, 2013.
This small, intimate yet ultra chic regatta
is created for the ‘Superyachts’, meaning
those mega vessels measuring more
than 100 feet in length.
Started back in 2009, the event has
been a success with a growing number
of competitors who help to bring
a significant amount of business to
restaurants, taxis and yachting business
establishments throughout the English
Harbour area.
The exclusivity of the SYC is made apparent
by these exciting, yet friendly pursuit races
which are open to a maximum of 12-15
yachts. This way, everyone is guaranteed
the comfortable use of the facilities in the
beautiful and historical English Harbour area.
The adjudication of the races is serious
business! The regatta uses ratings and start
times as determined by The Bucket Rating
System, a popular scoring system used in
the Newport Bucket and St. Barths Bucket
Regattas.
Competitors of SYC also enjoy many
private parties which only add to the fun
and relaxing atmosphere of the regatta.
Over 250 people participate with mostly
an international crowd, mixed with those
locals involved in the business of yachting.
Superyacht Challenge Antigua Committee
Head, Stan Pearson, explained that, “the event
is a successful one which brings a significant
economic impact to the country.” This year’s
regatta is expected to be as successful, if
not more so, as previous years. With eight
competitor yachts already confirmed and
three showing interest in competing, SYC
Antigua 2013 should be one super exclusive
yachting experience!

Beaches...Prove it! Finding 365: Beach Counting
in Antigua and Barbuda

bays and beaches, particularly along the Leeward side (east coast) of
the island. Longer stretches of stunning beaches are predominant on
the Windward side (western coast) of the island; the coast that is most
likely of volcanic origins with steep-sided hills with peaks rising upwards
of 1300 feet.
To be fair in proving this claim, one should include the beaches found
on Antigua’s outer islands (Long Island, Guiana Island, Crump Island to
name a few) along with those stunning stretches of pink-sand beaches
in lovely Barbuda for any beach-counting expedition! But we’re sure,
that there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Antigua and Barbuda is
blessed with a unique wealth of stunning beaches and unrestricted,
scenic vistas of the sea. The multitude of beaches and bays on our
islands is something quite peculiar in the Eastern Caribbean, especially
so in the smaller surrounding islands that make up the Leeward Island
grouping.
Though there is much suspicion surrounding the claim, we don’t know
of anyone who’s actually counted them all (sounds to us like a tough yet
rewarding job to have). But really, who’s counting? Relax and enjoy the
rays and the clear blue seas on whichever of the 365 beaches you find
yourself. Just rest assured that there’s a lot more where that came from!
And if when you hear the phrase, ‘the land of 365 beaches’, you think of
us in Antigua and Barbuda, then we’ve done our job!
Beach-Counting Tours – 365 Beaches? Go ahead and Count the Ways!
Just as Dominica boasts 365 rivers, our claim to having 365 beaches
is not one that is taken lightly. This claim incites a challenge for locals
and tourists alike to try and discover all the beaches. There’s just
something terribly appealing in having a different beach to go to on
each day of the year.
However, the task is somewhat daunting as a number of the beaches
are only accessible via boat. But that’s not usually the immediate
problem people face. Many end up falling in love with one or two
specific beaches and always choose to go there to soak up some
sun, totally forgetting to go exploring for others.
On the flip side, explorers at heart tend to keep the whereabouts
of the more secluded places to themselves, just to avoid having to
share with too many people.
Nevertheless, do not be discouraged. Here’s a challenge:
Take a shot at drawing the island of Antigua, as close to the actual
shape as you can possibly get. Students on the island can attest to
the difficulty associated with this popular Geography class activity.
We’ve heard many describe the aerial view of Antigua as an inkblot.
Some also see it as a trapezoid, some as a triangle; you take your
pick! Whatever shape, examination of the Antigua coastline leaves
many in comprehension of the mythical 365 beaches claim to fame.
The predominantly limestone geological formation of the islands
and its jagged shoreline have left the impression of many indented
Some people may balk at the idea of 365 beaches on our small, but breathtakingly beautiful twin-island paradise, but don’t let the size
fool you. Despite being only 170 square miles between the two islands, Antigua and Barbuda holds within itself many hidden gems
of the whitest sand and bluest waters this side of the Eastern Caribbean.
7
There is a large offering of land and/or sea tours on island to satisfy
anyone’s curiosity. If you still want to try and double check the
impressive 365 beaches, then try one (or three) of these tours listed
and count away!

Spa Spotlight
T ucked away on Antigua’s Western coast
is one of the island’s best-kept secrets in
Spas! The contemporary Sugar Ridge Resort
boasts the first Aveda Spa in the Eastern
Caribbean, offering a complete range of top-
class Aveda treatments
and products.
Aveda (pronounced ah-
vay-da) was founded in
1978 and today is part of
Estée Lauder Companies
Inc., based in New York. In
1970, Aveda founder Horst
Rechelbacher, on a trip to
India, was introduced to the healing properties
of Ayurveda
(the traditional
Hindu longevity
medicine) and
aroma, and
suddenly his
vision for his
company (thus
the name Aveda)
was born.
The Aveda brand vision, “connecting beauty,
environment and well-being,” aligns with that of
Sugar Ridge Resort and Spa, as it seeks to offer
high quality accommodation and service to its
customers.
On a recent visit to the Aveda Spa, it
became apparent almost
immediately that the
transformation to Zen
was inevitable, as the
contemporary feel was
well balanced with the
properties needed to
send any stress-magnet
into a state of calm. Many
Caribbean spas take advantage of the dramatic
vistas and the sounds of nature, and so the
indoor concept was a new one for our team,
and well-carried by Aveda. The treatment
of choice was the Caribbean Therapy Body
Treatment, which started with a dry exfoliation
that was followed by a smoothing, detoxifying
seaweed masque and wrap. In a few words,
this treatment was the perfect combination of
invigoration and relaxation!
At the Aveda Spa at Sugar Ridge, you can
beautify yourself from head to toe, as the
facility features an extensive Retail Shop, Hair
Salon, state of the art Manicure and Pedicure
stations and Massage and Treatment rooms.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Airport Administrative
Charge in Full effect.
Ratified and initiated in the month of November, Antigua and
Barbuda’s Departure Tax as we know it has become a thing of the
past. The more streamlined process has already contributed to the
improvement in the visitor departure experience at the V.C. Bird
International Airport, requiring only check –in, immigration and
security checks before boarding.
How does it Work?
Passengers are quoted the Airport Administrative Charge on all
flights operating into and out of Antigua (ANU). The charge is
administered on all legs of a journey that includes an international
arrival or departure to or from Antigua and Barbuda. The average
round-trip journey costs travellers $75 USD in taxes, provided that
there is one entry into and one departure out of the state. Taxes
are collected by the airline, and transferred to an IATA managed
account, which then remits those payments to the Antigua and
Barbuda Airport Authority.

from December 23, 2012, and CanJet (sold and marketed as Air

Montreal every Sunday starting January 6, 2013.

to Antigua, and then continuing from Antigua to Kingston, Jamaica.
The return (BW459) backtracks all of the islands visited on the
northbound BW458 journey. From Friday January 18 – February 1,
BW458 – BW459 adds Barbados to the routing which will now reflect
Trinidad-Barbados-Antigua-Kingston on the northbound BW458 leg
and Kingston-Antigua-Barbados-Trinidad on the southbound BW459
leg. Caribbean Airlines operates a fleet of Boeing 737-800 series
aircraft on all of its twice weekly flights from Trinidad and Kingston to

Cutting the waves with million-dollar precision, sailing is an
intense pastime that attracts sea-babies from near and from
far. Antigua and Barbuda does it a little better though, with blue skies,
warm seas, constant winds, smiling locals and an abundance of skilled
on-ground support services. We are the proclaimed ‘Yachting Capital
of the Caribbean’, and there is no doubt about that. But how is the
industry faring thus far, and what are the plans for 2013?
The Tourism E-Blast team set out to get the scoop on yachting in
Antigua and Barbuda for the coming season from various yachting
stakeholders on the island.
Here’s what they said:
tourism e-Blast: What are some major factors for
the growth in the industry?
John Duffy: China! And it will be growth. There are now more
millionaires in China than the rest of the world put together. Chinese
millionaires are just beginning to spend their wealth on yachts.
Construction of super/mega yachts is just beginning in China, as is
the development of marina facilities. Over the next decade or so,
China will have a major impact on global yachting. Although taking a
dip over the past few years, the smaller yacht market has continued
to grow and will be a considerable factor in tourism as the wealthy
middle classes, who started taking to leisure yachting in the 1980s,
continue to do so.
tourism e-Blast: How do the yachting industry
stakeholders feel about the season?
Alison sly-Adams: All indications look good for a strong season!
While the total number of boats was down in the charter show,
the service businesses have been as busy as ever. For the season
generally, the advent of the new Jolly Harbour Valentine’s Regatta
and Rum Festival, the Oyster World Rally and the new Caribbean
Christmas Rally mean that we have new life being breathed into our
event calendar, but the existing events are not suffering. The RORC
Caribbean 600 reached a record 30 entries pre-Christmas this year
and has an all-star line up for the February event, and they think it
will be their biggest year yet!
tourism e-Blast: How has support been from the
Antigua and Barbuda tourism Authority (ABtA)?
Alison sly-Adams: The ABMA’s* membership view is that we
are taking some significant steps forward in our working relationship
with ABTA and ABTA’s understanding of the importance of the
sector. We recently received an article written in Practical Boat
Owner Magazine by its editor, and even in that, the editor refers
to our self appointed strap line, ‘Yachting Capital of the Caribbean.’
The message we are sending is being heard. We can still have room
for improvement as we attempt to co-ordinate more with the
overseas offices and work together to ensure that we maximize all
of the opportunities, but there is no doubt that the joint marketing
campaign is having an impact and giving industry stakeholders more
confidence in the ABTA.

About our Contributors:

Alison sly-Adams is in charge of Marketing, Sponsorship Liaison
and Shoreside Organisation for Antigua Sailing Week.
Kathy Lammers is the Chairman of the Regatta Organising
Committee for Antigua Sailing Week.
tourism e-Blast: talk about some of the preparations
for sailing Week. How is registration coming along?
How are things looking?
Alison sly-Adams and Kathy Lammers:
So far we have 33 entries which look good and we’re still waiting
for the charter companies to put in the bulk of their entries for
this year. We have worked hard over the summer to spread the
word internationally in the US, Canada, the UK and Germany and are
getting an excellent response.
We have a brand new event on Lay Day, the Nonsuch Bay RS Elite
Challenge. Top skippers, by invite only, will race to win a one-week
stay for two at Nonsuch Bay Resort with unlimited use of their
sailing facilities and equipment. The skippers are very excited about it.
Party plans have now begun and will be sharing those plans soon.
There will be no significant changes to the racing this year – all of the
changes made over the past two years have been very well received
so except for a bit of fine-tuning, there will be no major changes.
The Yachting World Round Antigua Race will return once again and
we expect the Guadeloupe to Antigua Race will be well subscribed
as always.
tourism e-Blast: In terms of the headliner entertainer
for Antigua sailing Week 2013, can you say who it is?
Who is being considered? Can you at least give us a
hint?
Alison sly-Adams: Afraid no
hints yet!

Works at: LIAT, the Caribbean Airline
Does: LIAT Cabin Crew and Cabin Crew Trainer
Special Distinctions & Awards: Antigua Hotel and Tourist Association (AHTA) Tourism Employee of the Year 2012
LIAT’s Crystal Wing Award for service excellence during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007
What sets Kemberly Apart?
Her calm disposition. Using her wealth of knowledge and experience, she often finds a win/win situation which enables her passengers to
leave with a positive impression of LIAT and go on to enjoy their time spent in Antigua.
What keeps her going? What is her Motivation?
An Antiguan and Barbudan by birth, Kemberly views herself as an important ambassador to her country and the Caribbean, and strongly
believes that first impressions should be lasting ones, as every business can benefit from
repeat customers.
What does being an Antiguan and Barbudan Hospitality Ambassador mean to her?
A 12 year Hospitality veteran, this former Antigua Homecoming Queen 2005 sees being acknowledged as a Hospitality Ambassador as
confirmation that she’s on the right track to providing excellent quality service while performing the job that she loves.
It’s near extraordinary, to have your hospitality nationally
recognized, when your charm and work ethic extend way beyond
the borders of home; when in fact, your job requires you to
comfort and support hundreds of passengers, many thousands
of feet in the air across the Caribbean island chain. Kemberly
is one of the few that has the pleasure (and the challenge, no
doubt) of coming into contact with hundreds of tourists on a
daily basis on the short island hops across the calm blue seas of
the Caribbean, as LIAT Cabin Crew. What sets her apart is her
ability to lead and work with others, to collaborate in creative
endeavours, to innovate and inspire without dominating any
undertaking. Ms. Greenaway was grateful and happy when she
was awarded the Antigua Hotel and Tourist Association (AHTA)
Tourism Employee of the Year 2012 distinction, for her excellence
and contribution to the tourism industry of Antigua and Barbuda.
Nominated for consideration by her company, Kemberly floored
the judging panel made up of tourism stakeholders and officials
with her attitude, knowledge and commitment to the building
of the tourism industry. But interestingly enough however, many
usually take a moment to associate Kemberly’s profession

with the tourism industry, until it finally clicks. Flights involve
the movement of people, from home to a business meeting,
from the beach back to work, to a relative’s wedding, or to
that island’s carnival celebrations, everyone a tourist in their
own sense. And Kemberly does her part by offering the true
warmth of our people, in times of stressful air travel.
No doubt, LIAT’s girls & guys (as they are often called across
the region) have a certain flair to them. They bring back style
from the glory days of air travel, almost totally lost in North
American air transport. They are always immaculately dressed,
well spoken and gracefully carried, the subtleties in service and
style that those foreign to our region often marvel at within the
small cabins of the Dash-8 aircraft.
Kemberly exemplifies the Antiguan and Barbudan spirit, her
warm smile will make you feel right at home from the moment
you board the aircraft. Her happy passengers and her willingness
to go above and beyond only hint at the effort and pride that
Kemberly takes in her work.
Tourism Antigua and Barbuda appreciates the work of this
hospitality ambassador, especially when her Antigua-bound
passengers disembark her flight happier and more relaxed,
making for a good start to their visit to our paradisiacal islands.
Congratulations Kemberly! Keep the flag of Antigua and
Barbuda flying high!
