Dengue Fever is a viral disease characterized by sudden onsetof fever of 38 C and above, lasting for 5 days or more. This isaccompanied by muscle or joint pains, appearance ofpetecchiae of the arms, body, feet and legs, positive tourniquettest and/or thrombocytopenia or low platelet count of less than100,000/cu.mm.
The most important way to prevent and control Dengue Fever isto eliminate favorable sites of the Aedes mosquitoes. This canbe done by maintaining cleanliness of the surroundings anddiscarding containers that collect water suitable for breeding.Fumigation and/or use of larvicides may be necessary to reducemosquito density in the community. Continuing health educationon the prevention, control and management of Dengue Fever, isas important as the other activities.
