Dr. Carney Matheson, Chair Department of Anthropology Lakehead University Thunder Bay, ON. Re: Adjunct Prof Status at Lakehead University Hello Dr. Matheson, Thank you for contacting me about my Adjunct Professor status, which has lapsed in June 2013. I request a renewal for another term, if agreeable with the faculty and administration. I have attached a copy of my CV. I have been a full professor in Anthropology here at Laurentian for over ten years now, and continue to do anthropological and archaeological research in northern Ontario. I also work fairly closely with First Nations groups and northern communities around the area between Georgian Bay and James Bay. Over the past years I have been contacted by faculty and students at Lakehead for copies of my publications, and copies of my book on Cummins Site and the Lakehead Complex . I have several boxes so am happy to provide free copies. I continue to do some collaborative research and share some data with other members of your department including Bill Ross. I plan to semi-retire from Laurentian after the next year, but hope to remain active in research as an Emeritus Prof. I have proposed to Scott Hamilton to send my Cummins site artifact holdings back to Lakehead, as they would be better located at your institution. Our other archaeologist Dr. Hawkins agrees with this plan. I have also agree to share in my northern and Great Lakes geological chert and other silicate reference collection. Our Anthropology program is now part of the School of Northern Development and we have hired two new Anthropology faculty, one in Medical Anthropology and one in Visual Anthropology, both are Aboriginal. I am a member of the graduate faculty here at Laurentian and would be willing to assist as a member of a graduate student committee if the opportunity developed. Thank you for considering this request. Sincerely, Dr. Patrick J. Julig

8. CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

Research Projects 1. The Speigel Site Project, with David Brose, University of Michigan. This is an

International collaboration to produce a book on this important site. This has been accepted by University of Michigan, Museum of Anthropology

2. Geochemical sourcing of regional flint and chert artifacts by ICP-MS, with Darrel Long and Balz Kamber, Earth Sciences Dept. We have conducted a pilot test of about 40 samples, both geological and artifacts, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), in order to geo-chemically « finger-print » these specimens to determine their sources. This preliminary analysis has been completed, and the results are very promising, and plans are to apply this research on other samples, including the Amberley Ridge travel corridor.
