Lead project counsel Barbara Luikart agrees with Mayor Bob Buckhorn who stated, “It is the last missing piece of a downtown that is about ready to explode. This is what we’ve been striving for ... We knew the timing was right. We’re excited.” As reported in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, a spokesman for Publix stated in an email that “Publix is excited about the opportunity to serve the Channel District community.” Being on the forefront of development in the Channel District is not new for Mercury Advisors. The company was the developer of Grand Central at Kennedy, the mixed-use office, residential, and retail condominium towers just south of the new Channel Club site. The Publix grocery store, a 37,600-square-foot facility with roof-top parking, will be built on the western portion of the block between Twiggs and Madison streets, and the 22-story, 323-unit tower will be built on the eastern section of the site. Mercury Advisors, through its principals, Ken Stoltenberg and Frank Bombeeck, has worked for more than 13 years to bring a grocery store to the Channel District. Construction is expected to start in Spring 2016. Just east of the Channel Club apartment tower, city officials are planning a park that will use land donated in part by Stoltenberg and Bombeeck’s company. Investing in and contributing to the community is not new to Stoltenberg and Bombeeck. Their company also donated space to Stageworks Theater in Mercury Advisors’ Grand Central development. We look forward to continuing to work with our clients on this exciting project, and we thank them for their commitment to a more livable, walkable, and vibrant downtown.
