Obituário 435 Antar Padilha Gonçalves passed away on April 20th 2005, at 89 years of age, leaving behind a long life dedicated to medicine and, mainly, to dermatology and university teaching. His life can be unfolded into steps that demon- strate the various facets that added up to integrate his highly differentiated personality, which made him outstanding among his peers. Antar Padilha Gonçalves was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro, son of the industrialist Manoel da Silva Gonçalves and the teacher Celina Padilha Gonçalves, who provided him with a cultured family environ- ment responsible for his school education, and hence for his admission to the National Medical School at Brazil University. As a student, he was in personal touch with renowned masters, among whom were Olympio da Fonseca Filho, Eduardo Rabello and Armínio Fraga. Ever since the beginning of his career as a physician he felt the necessity for reas- surance and crystallization of his knowledge on both dermatology and internal medicine. Antar Padilha Gonçalves deepened his learning on inter- nal medicine at the service coordinated by Prof. Annes Dias, at Hospital Estácio de Sá, and since his fourth medical school year he had attended the 26th Infirmary Ward at the Holy Mercy Hospital in Rio, co-temporaneously with Armínio Fraga and João Ramos e Silva, who drew him def- initely into the study of skin diseases, and, in the year that followed his graduation at 21 years of age, he joined, in 1938, the Brazilian Society of Dermatology. The life of Antar Padilha Gonçalves can be dissected step by step, and this is the way to under- stand his progressive career from his university student life to the top of his teaching activities. As a professor, he went through all steps of the academic career until reaching, in 1972, the posi- tion of Full Professor of Dermatology at the Medical and Surgical School, today belonging to UNIRIO, having stayed there until retirement in 1986. On that occasion, Prof. Antar Padilha Gonçalves defended as a thesis one of his favorite themes, approaching an important dis- ease for tropical pathology - paracoccidioidomycosis. Antar Padilha Gonçalves always exceeded as a researcher and contributed variously with science. It is worth highlighting his studies on fixed pigmented erythema, epidemi- ological investigation on sporotrichosis, miliaria solaris (1984), elastotic verrucous dermatitis (1987), connective tissue panniculitis, in collabora- tion with Wilkelmann, traumatic anserin folliculosis (1979) and his thesis for the professorship of Siphilographic and Dermatological Clinics at the Surgical and Medical School in Rio de Janeiro, 1964 - experimental mole. Antar Padilha Gonçalves participated with great notability in the most important events of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, such as its annual meetings, and was also one of idealizers of the Triangular Dermatology Meetings, along with Tancredo Furtado, Rubem David Azulay and Sebastião Sampaio. A tireless entrepreneur and always in a con- stant search for knowledge, Antar Padilha Gonçalves became an important name in international meetings. He was a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and immortal member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Antar Padilha Gonçalves was the oldest mem-ber of the Society of Dermatology, and even thoughhis passing was a great loss to this specialty, his exam-ple will naturally thrive. Antar Padilha Gonçalves, or
