Antar Padilha Gonçalvespassed away on April 20th 2005,at 89 years of age, leaving behinda long life dedicated to medicineand, mainly, to dermatology anduniversity teaching. His life can beunfolded into steps that demon-strate the various facets thatadded up to integrate his highlydifferentiated personality, whichmade him outstanding among hispeers.

Antar Padilha Gonçalveswas born in the city of Rio deJaneiro, son of the industrialistManoel da Silva Gonçalves andthe teacher Celina PadilhaGonçalves, who provided himwith a cultured family environ-ment responsible for his schooleducation, and hence for hisadmission to the National Medical School at BrazilUniversity. As a student, he was in personal touchwith renowned masters, among whom wereOlympio da Fonseca Filho, Eduardo Rabello andArmínio Fraga. Ever since the beginning of hiscareer as a physician he felt the necessity for reas-surance and crystallization of his knowledge onboth dermatology and internal medicine. AntarPadilha Gonçalves deepened his learning on inter-nal medicine at the service coordinated by Prof.Annes Dias, at Hospital Estácio de Sá, and sincehis fourth medical school year he had attendedthe 26th Infirmary Ward at the Holy MercyHospital in Rio, co-temporaneously with ArmínioFraga and João Ramos e Silva, who drew him def-initely into the study of skin diseases, and, in theyear that followed his graduation at 21 years ofage, he joined, in 1938, the Brazilian Society ofDermatology.

The life of Antar Padilha Gonçalves can bedissected step by step, and this is the way to under-

stand his progressive career fromhis university student life to thetop of his teaching activities. As aprofessor, he went through allsteps of the academic careeruntil reaching, in 1972, the posi-tion of Full Professor ofDermatology at the Medical andSurgical School, today belongingto UNIRIO, having stayed thereuntil retirement in 1986. On thatoccasion, Prof. Antar PadilhaGonçalves defended as a thesisone of his favorite themes,approaching an important dis-ease for tropical pathology -paracoccidioidomycosis.

Antar Padilha Gonçalvesalways exceeded as a researcherand contributed variously withscience. It is worth highlighting

his studies on fixed pigmented erythema, epidemi-ological investigation on sporotrichosis, miliariasolaris (1984), elastotic verrucous dermatitis(1987), connective tissue panniculitis, in collabora-tion with Wilkelmann, traumatic anserin folliculosis(1979) and his thesis for the professorship ofSiphilographic and Dermatological Clinics at theSurgical and Medical School in Rio de Janeiro, 1964- experimental mole.

Antar Padilha Gonçalves participated with greatnotability in the most important events of theBrazilian Society of Dermatology, such as its annualmeetings, and was also one of idealizers of theTriangular Dermatology Meetings, along withTancredo Furtado, Rubem David Azulay and SebastiãoSampaio. A tireless entrepreneur and always in a con-stant search for knowledge, Antar Padilha Gonçalvesbecame an important name in international meetings.He was a member of the American Academy ofDermatology and immortal member of the NationalAcademy of Medicine.

Antar Padilha Gonçalves was the oldest mem-ber of the Society of Dermatology, and even thoughhis passing was a great loss to this specialty, his exam-ple will naturally thrive. Antar Padilha Gonçalves, or

simply Antar, as he was affectionately called, was agentleman, and of his marriage with Maria Noêmia heleft three daughters proud of their father and missinghim: Ana Luísa, Angela and Maria.
