Finding Answers to Improving Student Retention

Educators are using predictive analytics to drive higher

graduation rates. Using simple, affordable, cloud-based

solutions, you can predict which students are at risk of

dropping out and get individualized recommendations for how to intervene and keep them on track – no analytics

expertise required. Focus on what matters most: creating

and retaining successful students.

How serious is the problem?

1 2010 Retention/completion summary tables published by ACT Inc.

2 “Colleges are failing in graduation rates,” The New York Times, September 8, 2009.

3 “Education Secretary Targets Colleges with Low Graduation Rates,” The New York Times, June 5, 2012.4 Graduation Rates Fall at One-Third of 4-year Colleges,” The Chronicle of Higher Education, December 5, 2010.

Incoming Freshmen

Returning Sophomores

1/3 of enrolled freshmen fail to return for their sophomore year. 1 Nearly two of every three students whostarted college did not graduate from

that same college in 4 years. 3

and more than 40% didn’t graduatein 6 years.

Only half of students enrolled in a college or

university receive a bachelor’s degree. 2

Over 30% of 4-year colleges recently saw

a drop in their median graduation rate. 4

What’s the cost of losing students?

Lost tuition revenue The cost of recruiting new students

Repair of damaged reputation

Loss of alumni donations

9

Costs theschool

College dropouts are more likely

than graduates to be unemployed, earn less, and default on loans.

Weaker start for students

For a university with 6,000 students that charges$30k/year in tuition and experiences a 1/3 dropout rate of freshmen, this could mean $180M in lost tuit ion !

Who’s using analytics now to improve retention?

Hamilton County School District has seen an 10%

increase in graduation rates and a 25% reduction in

the annual dropout rate since the solution was

introduced in 2009.

The American Public University System

knows with approximately 80% certainty

whether a given student is going to drop out.

Wichita State University increased

the accuracy of predictions about

student success by 15 percent, to a

staggering 96 percent.

Beginning the analytics journey to improvingstudent retention

What key metrics are related to student

retention?

Where is student data stored, and how can

I access it?

What attributes of my student body, courses

of study, or supplemental programs make

my institution unique?

What intervention programs might beimplemented to retain students?

How might I grow my analytics capability?
