June 8, 2014 DAY OF PENTECOST I was about 16 when I first began to hear the call to ordained ministry. Like so many natives of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, that first whisper came to me at Camp Glisson. The pastor for the week gave an invitation at the end of the morning chapel service for anyone feeling a call from God to come forward and pray with him. I went; and on the way back to the pew in the back where I had been sitting, my sister (who was on staff at the time) caught my eye and gave me that “Are you crazy?!?” look. After growing up in the home of an itinerant preacher, we had promised each other that we would NEVER do any of the following things when we became adults: 1) become ministers, Answering the Call of God 2) marry ministers, or 3) ever move ever again once we left home. I have now broken all three of those promises. But it did not come easy, the call to a life of ministry. Like Samuel, there were times when I was not sure what voice it was that I was hearing. Like Peter, there were times when I could not acknowledge that I was, indeed, a follower of Christ. Like Moses, at times the call of God was frightening to me. But it did not stop God from calling, and, ultimately, it did not prevent me from saying, “Yes”. It continues to be an interesting, joy-filled, at times frustrating, and very fulfilling life, now 20 + years since that first whisper in my ear. I am lucky to be continuing to live out the call and the yes here at Oak Grove with you. I look forward to hearing more about your call stories and the ways God is moving in your life, using you for the sake of the gospel, and leading you in new and uncertain directions. And if you are wondering if now is the time to finally say “Yes”, come have a conversation with me. Still glad after all these years that I finally said “Yes”,

June 8, 2014 DAY OF PENTECOST

I was about 16 when I first began to hear the call to

ordained ministry. Like so many natives of the

North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist

Church, that first whisper came to me at Camp

Glisson. The pastor for the week gave an invitation

at the end of the morning chapel service for anyone

feeling a call from God to come forward and pray

with him. I went; and on the way back to the pew in

the back where I had been sitting, my sister (who was

on staff at the time) caught my eye and gave me that

“Are you crazy?!?” look. After growing up in the

home of an itinerant preacher, we had promised each

other that we would NEVER do any of the following

things when we became adults: 1) become ministers,

Answeringthe Call of God

2) marry ministers, or 3) ever move ever again once

we left home. I have now broken all three of those

promises.

But it did not come easy, the call to a life of ministry.

Like Samuel, there were times when I was not sure

what voice it was that I was hearing. Like Peter,

there were times when I could not acknowledge that

I was, indeed, a follower of Christ. Like Moses, at

times the call of God was frightening to me. But it

did not stop God from calling, and, ultimately, it did

not prevent me from saying, “Yes”.

It continues to be an interesting, joy-filled, at times

frustrating, and very fulfilling life, now 20 + years

since that first whisper in my ear. I am lucky to be

continuing to live out the call and the yes here at Oak

Grove with you. I look forward to hearing more

about your call stories and the ways God is moving in

your life, using you for the sake of the gospel, and

leading you in new and uncertain directions. And if

you are wondering if now is the time to finally say

“Yes”, come have a conversation with me.

Still glad after all these years that I finally said “Yes”,

e safety of elderly adults must be a concern of all Christians. Too often, elderly adults are abused and neglected in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. If you suspect that an elderly person is being abused, neglected, or preyed upon nancially or in other ways, it’s important to speak up. Learn about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem. At Oak Grove we want to make sure that children have the food they need.
