verb—to cause to operate (keep time) in unison, as to

synchronize watches (chronometers) or to

synchronize the sound with the film in a motion

picture. The sound track of the film was not

synchronized with the picture so those of us in the

movie theater complained.

noun—a secret agreement between two or more

persons for a deceitful purpose. The manager

suspected collusion between the two employees

accused of embezzling company funds.

noun—a person or thing that runs before; a

forerunner. The fountain pen was the precursor of the

ballpoint pen.

noun—the right to interpret (speak) and apply the

law; legal power to hear and decide cases;

verb—to cut in two, as a diameter bisects a circle. The

nature trail bisects the park.

chronicle BIO

noun—a written account of someone’s life. Carl

Sandburg’s biography of Abraham Lincoln, originally

published in six volumes, has become the definitive

chronicle of Lincoln’s life.

anticipate ANTE, ANTI

verb—to realize beforehand. No one anticipated such

an outcome.

exceed CEDE, CEED

verb—to extend beyond or outside of. The apple on

the tree exceeds her reach.

cursory CUR

adjective—running over rapidly without attention to

detail; hasty and superficial. The book reviewer gave

the novel only a cursory reading.

noun—a rare exception; something that is not normal.

An example of an anomaly in nature is the ostrich, a
