My orchids which I told you about last year are in good shape thanks to the knowledge I gained from watching YouTube A few have flowered Patience is the key

I hope this issue of the Briar Crier finds you well Sadly 2020 the year many of us thought was going to be the perfect year turned out to be the most difficult year of the century Although the second wave of the Covid-19 Pandemic has already begun we have now had practice and we are informed

We have decided to cancel our 30th Anniversary Prize Competition because of the risks associated with picking up and delivering prizes We thank the businesses and residents who participated We will have lots to celebrate next year

Finding ways to stay healthy and happy at this time will be challenging I believe we can do this There have been times recently when I felt overwhelmed but fortunately I found things to keep me busy at home I trust that you have as well

My flower garden which is in its fifth year of growth if I am remembering correctly was beautiful and satisfying My kitchen garden didnt do as well however although we have eaten from it I was disappointed in the produce The shortened season prevented many tomatoes from ripening on the vine and there were not nearly as many zucchini squashes on the plants as there usually is hellip and the summer seemed to fly by I am grateful for the experience and I firmly believe that next year will be a better year

Our glorious Autumn season is now upon us which provides us with an opportunity we can take advantage of ie leisurely drives through the country to observe natures beauty Remember that you may have a short window of time for recreational driving

Now that the weather is cooler I have started spending more time inside I regularly watch YouTube where I can find videos on everything I can think of Videos I watched this summer inspired me to do more with my indoor garden

PS I just made zucchini bread for the first time It was delicious and a big hit I substituted creamed coconut for the oil I will give you the recipe next month

Our summer fun was definitely different and terribly affected by COVID-19 and all of its related policies and regulations This virus has been a wake-up call

At the time of this writing there have been no cases of Covid-19

in Ward 4 and relatively speaking few in New Tecumseth Simcoe County Social Services has done an exemplary job of preventing the spread of this deadly virus especially at our seniorshomecare residences where many of our most vulnerable seniors live Bravo

We must continue to care and share Listen to the experts and believe in the science We are all in this together Leadership is everything Just look at the difference between Canada and the USA Politics has no place defying the medical communitythis virus is not a hoax Our American neighbours have lost close to a quarter of a million good citizens I am sure our ldquoSnowbirdsrdquo know many of them This is so sad and unnecessary Ignorance is no excuse

New Tecumseth staff has worked hard to keep our finances on the ldquoblackrdquo side of the ledger as opposed to in the ldquoredrdquo This has been no easy task during the COVID-19 shut down of a great deal of society and enterprises Council agreed to extend the taxation due dates and the Finance Department has told us what this loss will be Due to the declining prime rates on investment income the unfavourable variance is $7500000 The unfavourable revenue variance is $27100000 due to lost penalties and interest of approximately $19700000

I want to thank our taxpayers as most paid on time This scenario could have been far worse which would have affected next yearrsquos tax increases So far so good It will be difficult to work out the 2021 Budget We have always tried to give a reasonable level of service and do many capital projects based on our modest small-town assessment base I hope and pray that the days ahead are not too difficult

Councillors ReportThe LED Traffic Signal Replacements will move forward this year and there will be operating dollar savings for Hydro use Good news as energy efficiency is important

Council had a presentation by Jane Sinclair General Manager of Health and Emergency Services County of Simcoe and Salter Pilon Architecture Inc related to the Simcoe Manor and Village redevelopment in Beeton The Plan is still subject to the Ministry of Long Term Care funding for new long term care beds County Council has approved $177 million for this needed project There will be a 160-bed home and 170 housing units of different sizes as well as a variety of designs and accommodation The County will be responsible for the $66 million to cover its costs New land was acquired There will be a campus concept built in one phase which will save approximately $4 million COVID-19 spacing factors will be addressed as well This project will provide support to over 400 seniors across the Region The operating costs will be less and the housing units self-sustainable If all goes as planned construction could begin mid to late 2021 and take 24-30 months to complete Fundraising will be required - one resident has bequeathed $80000000 to this project This is a kind and generous donation for which the County is grateful

There was a notice on Facebook that due to abuse and misuse as of October 1 2020 many new rules will be implemented The USA may try to break up these monopolies if change does not occur Be cautious There will be fines and you could be blocked from using Facebook I do not have all the details We must all do our due diligence

The Federal Government recently legalized cannabis under certain rules and weak regulations (The Cannabis Act) which has taken up a great deal of staff time and resulted in several Local Planning Appeal Tribunal hearings and neighbour disputes There is little law enforcement can do Dumping this issue at the lower tier of government was unfair and dealing with the consequences is stressful This is not local Councilsrsquo area of expertise Federal ministries should regulate monitor and bear the costs associated with the creation of the Cannabis Act

Ontario Moving to Enhance Public Safety and Food Supply ChainImmediate proclamation of key sections of new trespass and food safety act will better protect people and livestock transport drivers

WOODSTOCK - In order to keep people safe the Ontario government is making it an offence to stop obstruct hinder or otherwise interfere with a motor vehicle transporting farm animals Today the province proclaimed Section 6(1) and three other related sections of Bill 156 the Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act 2020 These proclamations will ensure the safety and security of the public and the provincial food supply while protecting the right for people to participate in lawful protests on public property

Stopping motor vehicles in traffic when they are transporting farm animals is dangerous for everyone including those who stop the trucks pedestrians livestock transporters and other drivers said Ernie Hardeman Minister of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) As actions like this are on the rise and public safety is a top priority for the Ontario government it is critical to bring these specific parts of the act into force immediately to ensure safety for everyone

These select sections of the act will come into effect on September 2 2020 They will help keep truck drivers and members of the public safe from the risks posed from obstruction of vehicles or interference with livestock in transport

(NEW TECUMSETH 92120) On Monday September 21st 2020 the Nottawasaga Foundation presented their fourth $100000 installment of a $1 million pledge made to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF)

To celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 2017 The Nottawasaga Foundation and the Biffis family pledged $1 million over 10 years towards the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundations Capital Campaign Because of You We Can The pledge will support the Hospitalrsquos redevelopment project as well as technology upgrades such as Meditech the new Health Information System (HIS) implemented in 2018

Herersquos my story My mother wanted to make sure I learned to work hard so when I was 13 she took me to work with her in a fruit market in the Jewish area of the city A year later she found me a job at Gryfersquos Bagel Bakery which was a block south of the fruit store She would drive me to work at 400 am on Saturdays and Sundays where I made and served fresh yummy bagels About a year after that Moishe Gryfe the owner of the bakery asked me if I would work for his brother Dr Bernie Gryfe a dentist at Steeles and Islington which was closer to home I worked after school and Saturdays for his associatesI finished my last two years of high school at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute with my Grade 13 diploma and a Diploma in Dental Assisting I graduated at the top of the classThen I got FIRED thatrsquos right fired and it wouldnrsquot be the last time so I spent the summer having fun working at Wonderland when it was in its infancyI then went to York University for 4 years while holding down a dental assistant job Thatrsquos when tuition was $1000 per year Those were the days

Moving along to Buffalo I decided to become a dental hygienist and moved to Buffalo and graduated from Erie Community College After graduation a friend strongly nudged me to become a dentist so back to the University of Buffalo I went to get the required courses for dental school Two years later I was finally accepted at Boston University Goldman School of Dentistry I graduated in 1999 and opened my practice right out of school as I had learned all aspects of running a dental officeThis year marks my 20th Anniversary in Bolton and my 2nd Anniversary in Beeton I opened the practice in Beeton because I was getting antsy and needed a new challengeThe time between patient appointments in our dental rooms has been lengthened to reduce the risk of patients contracting Covid-19 I therefore now work from the Beeton office only and have left Dr Nilay in charge of the Bolton officerdquoMy plan is to return to Bolton when I am able hopefully sooner rather than later Irsquove had some of my patients follow me to Beeton for now

This year Earth Overshoot Day came later than it has in 15 years mdash on August 22 Thatrsquos a mixed blessing Increasing per capita consumption population growth and rising greenhouse gas emissions had been moving the date earlier almost every year since the 1970s Itrsquos fallen in late July or early August for the past few years

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanityrsquos demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that yearrdquo according to the organization behind the concept Global Footprint Network Even with the later overshoot date we burned through a yearrsquos resources in under eight months That means we would need 16 Earths to support humanityrsquos current demands on the planetrsquos ecosystems

Employing the many readily available and emerging solutions to ldquomove the daterdquo closer to

yearrsquos end is the goal but this later-than-expected overshoot day was largely due to the COVID-19 Pandemic rather than direct measures to address the climate emergency and other crises

According to the Network the global pandemic slowdown helped drive the worldrsquos carbon footprint (that is emissions) down by 145 per cent and the forest product footprint by 84 per cent from 2019 with an overall 93 per cent reduction in humanityrsquos global ecological footprint

Network president Mathis Wackernagel sees this yearrsquos result as an encouraging sign that progress is possible but cautions that it must be made ldquoby design not by disasterrdquo

He compares our behaviour to a scam where current wealth must be repaid by others in the future ldquoMost countries have pretty strict laws about businesses running Ponzi schemes but

This further illustrates the need for a pandemic recovery that goes beyond returning to ldquonormalrdquo and for measures to address environmental crises that go beyond pandemic recovery

Global Footprint Network focuses on five areas planet cities energy food and population Its research and solutions align with the work of many organizations including Project Drawdown and the David Suzuki Foundation Everything starts from the recognition that humanity depends on fertile soil and clean air and water for our well-being and health

Because cities already consume 78 per cent of the worldrsquos energy and produce more than 60 per cent of its greenhouse gas emissions and wersquore becoming increasingly urban ldquoCity planning and urban development strategies are instrumental to balancing the supply of natural capital and populationrsquos demandrdquo

The David Suzuki Foundationrsquos energy transition research concurs that decarbonizing the economy is critical to addressing climate disruption Shifting to more local food systems and plant-based diets avoiding processed foods and reforming agricultural practices are also important

Rapid population growth is also unsustainable although consumption is a much greater problem mdashevidenced by the fact that the worldrsquos wealthiest 10 per cent produces close to half the worldrsquos

consumption-related emissions compared to just 10 per cent by humanityrsquos poorest half

Research shows the best way to slow population growth is to empower women With greater access to education and family-planning resources as well as increased equality and better economic opportunities women have fewer children and often have them later in life

Project Drawdown estimates family-planning resources and education for girls (which it notes should be basic human rights) could slow human population growth by one billion by 2050 consequentially keeping more than 85 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere

Although slowing population growth is important we canrsquot resolve the climate crisis if we donrsquot reduce the amount of resources we consume especially in the developed world As Global Footprint Network points out wersquore consuming resources at a much faster rate than Earth is able to replenish them Thatrsquos led not just to the climate crisis but also to a profound extinction and biodiversity crisis and continuing environmental devastation

COVID-19 has put humanity on pause and exposed some of our current systemrsquos flaws It has also shown that we can slow consumption and move on to something better than the old ldquonormalrdquo Wersquore at a crossroads and we must act quickly

When I retired to Avalon East I made a promise

to myself to do some volunteer work when I had some free time I had no idea what that work might be It took me several months to discover what I wanted to do and then it all came about by accident

A neighbour Mrs Kline called me and asked if I would help her deliver some packages as her car was in for service Naturally I agreed and when we had loaded the car she asked me to drive to Bradford Manor I had never heard of Bradford Manor but it proved to be a seniorsrsquo residence about five miles out of town After we unloaded the parcels Mrs Kline asked me to wait a few moments as she had business with the administrator I took the opportunity to look around and found myself in the main lounge There were about twenty elderly people in the room One was doing a jigsaw puzzle a couple was watching an old movie and the rest were just sitting in their chairs either dozing or waiting Those who were awake looked up when I entered the room with expressions on their faces that looked what I can only describe as lsquohopefulrsquo

There was one man in a wheel chair who was sitting near a window looking out into the courtyard For reasons I cannot explain I drifted over to him and pulled up a chair to sit beside him He must have heard my chair scrape on the floor for he looked up and said ldquoIs that you Haroldrdquo

ldquoNordquo I replied ldquoIrsquom just a visitorrdquo

He had a face that had not aged well His skin was sallow covered with liver spots and sagging around the eyes Wisps of white hair lsquohaloedrsquo his head He was wearing an unbuttoned cardigan over a checkered shirt loose fitting pants with a draw string waist and carpet slippers not quite on his feet His eyes were clear but they did not see

ldquoHarold hasnrsquot been here for a long timerdquo he went on ldquomaybe hersquoll come tomorrowrdquo

ldquoHave you been here longrdquo I offered by way of trying to make conversation

ldquoI donrsquot knowrdquo was his answer ldquomy name is Walterrdquo

I told him my name and then he turned back to the window I realize he could see the light but not the detail

ldquoWould you tell me what you see when you look out this windowrdquo he asked ldquoI used to be able to see it but I canrsquot remember everything

It was a lovely summer afternoon and from lsquohisrsquo window I told him I could see a courtyard nicely landscaped with flowers bushes and trees In the middle of the yard was a large pond It appeared to be spring fed The water was clear and the plants that grew in and around the pond looked healthy and vigorous I described all that I saw to Walter and then he closed his eyes

ldquoYou knowrdquo he said in a tone that was almost reverential ldquoI come to this window every day and I never get tired of the viewrdquo

Over the next few minutes Walter told me a little about his life He was born and had lived on a dairy farm near Peterborough He was an only child and was expected to take over the farm when his father lsquoretiredrsquo But the war came when he was eighteen and he joined the RCAF He became a lsquoMosquitorsquo bomber pilot He was shot down over France The Resistance got him to Spain He made his way back to England and rejoined his squadron After the war he returned to the farm but he brought his war bride with him He told his father that they were going to Edmonton and he was going to become a bush pilot hellip

ldquoIrsquove been looking all over for yourdquo it was Mrs Kline

I said my goodbyes to Walter His expression didnrsquot change It was as if my brief visit with him was of no consequence hellip just a voice that would fade into his emptiness He returned to his window

As we walked out of the residence an elderly soul came up to me took my hand and said lsquoHave you come to take me homersquo

I dropped in to see Walter every other week I took my recorder and he told me his adventures His care giver gave me a scrapbook of clippings and pictures that his wife had kept

Walter died before we finished

I guess you can tell I have found my volunteer work I now spend time with several of the residents of Bradford Manor and I hope by listening to their stories to make the lives they have lived more meaningful I know they have made my life more enriched

This month wersquoll take a journey back in time to see who we should thank for the wine wersquoll be enjoying at Thanksgiving

This idea came from a book by wine writer

Oz Clarke that proposes the ancient civilization responsible for the ldquodiscoveryrdquo of wine The usual suspects are the Egyptians Greeks and Romans There is certainly evidence that wine was sealed in Egyptian tombs to make the afterlife more enjoyable The Greeks deserve a place in history for the first civilization to export wine grapes and wine making to its colonies However the Romans did an even better job and spread vineyards to the far reaches of their empire in France and Germany But did they ldquodiscoverrdquo wine

Modern scholarship indicates the answer is no It would seem that honour goes to the Georgians (from Georgia in the Caucasus Mountains straddling Europe and Asia) In 6000 BCE they were making wine by sealing entire crushed bunches of grapes (pips stems skins and juice) in clay jars and burying them for 6-12 months to ferment What is even more remarkable is wine is still made this way in Georgia today They call

the product ldquogvinordquo which is amazingly similar to the Italian ldquovinordquo and French ldquovinrdquo

Was this anything like what we drink Not really according to Clarke who has tried it It is a unique experience to say the least Bright orange in colour extremely earthy tannic and bitter but also has flavours of peach citrus peel and dried figs Not a wine for most Canadian palates

Nevertheless this Thanksgiving raise your glass to the Georgians They may well be the ones that started it all

My ratings are based on a 5 star system developed by Michael Broadbent 5 stars Outstanding 4 stars Very good 3 stars Good 2 stars Moderately good 1 star Not very good but not bad No stars Poor

Eidosela Albarino 2018 $1895 (Vintages) Native to Spain this grape produces elegant dry intensely aromatic white wines and this is no exception Expect orange peach apricot lemon and grapefruit peel with predominant minerals and longish finish It would be very good matched with shrimp and a squeeze of lemon

The Ultimate Longshot Pinot Grigio 2018 $1600 (LCBO) Labelled as California which means the grapes can be from anywhere in the state most likely the Central Valley This light crisp white has simple flavours of pear lemon lime and green apple with a little residual sugar

NOTTAWASAGA LADIES GOLF ASSOCIATION

After what seemed to be a succession of warm sunny beautiful summer days in July August and into September Mother Nature has reminded us that fall has arrived

The ladies of the NLGA continued to head out to the golf course on misty mornings step through the morning dew on the fairways and be sure to wear an extra layer or two over their golf shirts We are determined to enjoy playing those final rounds right up to the end of September

As the 2020 season winds down we are grateful that we were able to put together a schedule of fun events even as many of our regular scrambles fun days lunches and competitions were cancelled Much credit goes to the hard working NLGA executive and the many members ldquobe-hind the scenesrdquo who managed to get us out onto the course for many Tuesdays of league golf

The final days of September closed off our Pin Days Ringer Board days mystery games and flight play The final day of our league play in September was an 18 hole round on the Ridge for the members of the 18 hole league and 9 holes of play on the Hill for the 9 hole ladies This day was dubbed PINK DAY in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness In connection with this the NLGA was very happy to be able to make a donation to the Breast Cancer Society this fall
