The show later travels to the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. 1982 Participates in Documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany. 1984 Exhibits at the Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. 1986 Exhibits at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. 1987 A solo exhibition of Kiefer’s work opens at the Art Institute of Chicago and later travels to the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Participates in Documenta 8 in Kassel, Germany. 1989 Completes Zweistromland/The High Priestess (begun in 1985), comprising two 26-foot-long shelves on which are arranged two hundred books made of lead. 1990 Receives the Wolf Prize from the Wolf Foundation in Jerusalem and the Kaiserring prize from the city of Goslar, Germany. 1991 Exhibits at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. 1992 Moves to Barjac, France. 1993 Exhibits at Marian Goodman Gallery in New York. Among the works on display is 20 Jahre Einsamkeit, an enormous pile of his works made between 1971 and 1991. Exhibits at the Sezon Museum of Art in Tokyo. The show later travels to the Kyoto National Museum of Art and to the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. 1995 Begins a series of monumental paintings on the cosmos. Exhibits at Kukje Gallery in Seoul. 1996 The Centro Cultural de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City organizes an exhibition of his work. 1997 Begins a series of paintings of archaic desert architectures. Exhibits at the Museo Correr in Venice and the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. Kiefer’s work is included in the inaugural exhibition of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, The Guggenheim Museums and the Art of This Century. 1998 The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid presents an exhibition of Kiefer’s work. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York organizes a retrospective of his works on paper. 1999 Receives the Praemium Imperiale for painting, awarded by the Japan Art Association.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents an exhibition of works from the artist’s private collection. 2001 Exhibits at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, the Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst in Humlebaek, Denmark, and the Royal Academy of Arts in London (of which he is an honorary member). 2002 Named Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. 2004 Exhibits at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. 2005 The exhibition Heaven and Earth opens at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Fort Worth, Texas, and later travels to the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. 2006 Participates in Homage to Chillida at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, where the exhibition Passages: Beuys, Darboven, Kiefer, Richter is presented later in the year. 2007 The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the exhibition Anselm Kiefer, curated by Germano Celant, which includes a selection of works created over the previous ten years. White Cube in London presents Aperiatur terra, featuring a new body of work by Kiefer, which is shown simultaneously at White Cube, Mason’s Yard and at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Creates a permanent installation for the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the first living artist to do so since Georges Braque created a ceiling painting for the museum in 1953. 2008 Awarded the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels. Triennale Bovisa in Milan presents the exhibition Kiefer e Mao che mille fiori fioriscano, curated by Germano Celant. 2009 Has a solo show at Gagosian Gallery in Rome. Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Massachusetts; and the Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris. 2011 Invited by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in the Netherlands to create a work inspired by Rembrandt’s The Nightwatch. The result is a spectacular La berceuse (for Van Gogh), which will be displayed at the Rijksmuseum on the occasion of the Kiefer & Rembrandt exhibition. His work is shown at Fondazione Vedova in Venice, the White Cube in London, the Craig F. Starr Gallery in New York, and at Ivory Press in Madrid.
