2019 TERM 2 - WEEK 6 ENDEAVOUR NEWSLETTER OF WEST RYDE PUBLIC SCHOOL ‘nothing left unattempted’ Principal’s Message West Ryde Public School is home to some talented students, but who knew we had a community of bakers? Everyone really did rise to the occasion and whipped up a storm for the SRC fundraiser ‘Adopt a Farmer’ day last Thursday. The mufti day and cake stall raised $1888, which was a flantastic effort. Congratulations to the SRC students for being clever cookies when selling and giving out the correct change, and a huge thank you to Mr. Kew for organising the day. Kiss and Ride Safety We want to ensure that all our students are safe getting to and from school. In the last few weeks we have seen some dangerous and unsafe behaviours from parents in the Kiss and Ride zone. Please make sure you do not queue jump and cut in front of other cars. Drop your children off near the top of the zone and never double park to let your child out of the car away from the curb. Also, to ensure a steady flow of traffic, please do not U-Turn from the Kiss and Ride zone. I know that on some mornings and afternoons the zone can get quite busy, but think about the safety of your children and all their school mates and let’s ensure we are all following the road rules around our school. Where is my child’s teacher? Often parents may wonder why a teacher is not teaching their class. ENDEAVOUR

NEWSLETTER OF WEST RYDE PUBLIC SCHOOL

‘nothing left unattempted’

Principal’s Message West Ryde Public School is home to some talented students, but who knew we had a community of bakers?

Drop your children off near the top of the zone and never double park to let your child out of the car away from the curb. venue. This year, teachers have been involved with professional learning for supporting students with additional learning needs, visible learning, classroom management, early career teacher training around the required accreditation process, literacy and numeracy teaching strategies, differentiation, leadership, EALD, STEM education, data collection and analysis, and sports organisation. And this is a tip of the iceberg in terms of the professional learning that teachers participate in throughout the year. All our teachers at West Ryde PS are life-long learners and actively seek professional development to ensure all our students are best catered for to maximise their learning.

Zone Cross Country Well done to the 61 students who represented WRPS at the Zone Cross Country last Wednesday down at Meadowbank Park. All participating students tried their very best on the day and should be commended for their efforts. Julian from 5/6K came 2nd in the 12 and 13 year olds race and will now go on to the Area Carnival at Gosford. All the best for the next event Julian! Eid Mubarak Best wishes to our families who are observing the end of Ramadan this week, one of the most joyous days in the Islamic calendar. Eid al-Fitr or Eid, is a day of happiness, thanksgiving and prayer and we are respectful of our students and their families who are connecting to their faith and identity as part of our vibrant, diverse, student centred school community. Albina Lee – R/Principal Senior Choir

On Sunday 26 May the Senior Choir competed in the Sydney Eisteddfod, in the Open Primary Choir category. The competition called for our songs and performance to be inspired by the words of Coach Ekkapol Chantawong spoken to his young 'Wild Boars' soccer team when he asked them to fight on, to have a good spirit and don't give up. Our students were certainly inspired and performed beautifully, singing a wonderful rendition of 'A Million Dreams' from the Greatest Showman and 'Roar' by Katy Perry.

Whilst we didn't win, the choir was awarded Highly Commended for having very good pitch and staying in tune the whole time - a very commendable quality of any musical group!

Ms Spencer, Miss Ham and Mrs Gray were very proud.

Debating On Tuesday 28th May, four members of the debating team competed in their first debate against Meadowbank Public School. The topic was “All zoos in Australia should be closed” and our team argued the affirmative. Zoe, Devika, Neha and Amritpal presented some very convincing arguments but unfortunately the other side won the debate. On Thursday 30th May, the remaining four members of the debating team travelled to Eastwood Public School for their debate on “We should ban reality TV shows that involve kids”. Priyanka, Indu, Leighton and Anne argued the negative, and the adjudicator noted how well researched our team was but the debate went to the other team. Both our teams are new to debating and should all be very proud of their efforts. Well done to all our debaters! Miss MacInnes, Miss Kim & Miss Jones Debating Coordinators

Girls State Football Championship The team played through pouring rain and scorching heat and were runners up, finishing with the Silver medal at the State Girls Football Championship. What a 3 day journey it was scoring 6 goals in 8 games with such amazing talent and skill set on display. Australian women’s soccer definitely has a bright future ahead!

It was such a proud moment and amazing experience representing my school at the state titles and I wish to thank all the teachers, staff and students at West Ryde Public School for supporting me in this awesome journey. This is just the beginning and I hope to do my school proud in the future. A special shout out to the teachers,

Mr James who brought this amazing opportunity to me and Mr Maggs understanding that this week away from school doesn't mean that I have not been doing my studies. Mum made sure that I completed my maths homework while I'm here. Thank you all again! Aanshi 5/6M 1% Change Makes 100% Difference – The Marsden Learning Alliance Student Leadership Project. On Tuesday May 28th the Marsden Learning Alliance Student Leadership Project was officially launched. The project- ‘1% Change Makes 100% Difference’, saw 40 students from West Ryde, Melrose Park, Meadowbank and Ermington Public Schools, along with students from Marsden High School attend a project workshop day to begin the journey of making small but significant changes around our schools. Throughout the day the school groups participated in student centred activities which enabled and empowered our aspiring future leaders to begin the process of making effective changes at their schools. The project will continue throughout 2019 as the student leadership groups action their plans and ideas at their respective schools. A Term 4 showcase of the Learning Alliance projects is planned and we look forward to the many exciting and positive changes the student leader projects will produce.

Building fund contribution 2019

I would like to thank all the wonderful parents who have already made their contribution towards the building fund for this year.

West Ryde Public School P&C has a Building fund helps with the cost of our building programs and maintenance within the school. The school is in constant need of development so that facilities can be constructed, maintained and improved. As a public school financial support for these on-going developments comes from generosity within our community in addition to government funding. We have used funds from this account in the past to help with the canteen refurbishment and procuring smart boards and Air conditioners for the school. The funds are parked in the Building fund account and are used as and when the need arises. A gift to the West Ryde Public School P&C Building fund is optional, but amounts of $35.00 per student/$60 per family are offered as a suggestion. Every contribution counts! All gifts/donations made to the Building Fund prior to 30 June are tax deductible for this financial year. Please return your form in an envelope marked ‘Building Fund’ and place in the locked box marked P&C, outside the office. Forms are required even for direct deposit payments and cheques should be made out to ‘West Ryde Public School P&C Association Building Fund’.
