Mary’s Center is Growing!

Mary’s Center will open a new health center in Prince George’s County in Early 2012

We are excited to announce that Mary’s Center will expand into Prince George’s County in 2012. This new health center was made possible by a $1.5 million grant from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (pictured right). Because the need in Prince George’s County is so great, we expect to serve 6,000 people in just the first year. “Seventy percent of our participants currently coming for services to our site in Montgomery County are residents of Prince George’s County, and that was one of the most powerful drivers for us to open a site in Prince George’s County,” said Mary’s Center President/CEO Maria Gomez at the groundbreaking ceremony on October 26th. The new health center, featuring 10 exam rooms, will provide prenatal care, pediatric services, and primary care for adults. Through a partnership with the Prince George’s County Public Schools and the Prince George’s Child Resource Center, which will provide social and educational services, Mary’s Center will replicate our social change model. Additional funding for this project was provided by Providence Hospital, March of Dimes and the George Preston Fund.

Our top contributors to this campaign include:

Diane and Norman Bernstein, Alan and Amy Meltzer, the M&T Charitable Foundation, F.H. Community Health, Mr. & Mrs. Mathew Klinger, Capital Projects Management Firm, City First Bank, Derek and Linda Harps, and Board Members of Mary’s Center. Thank you!

Mary’s Center recently launched the Building Better Futures Together Campaign with the goal

of raising $4 million to strengthen the capacity of our existing programs and build an endowment fund to ensure the

organization’s sustainability and longevity.

Today, we are close to the first million dollar mark. We are extremely thankful for the leadership and dedication of our co-chairs Derek Harps and Alan Meltzer. They need the commitment of all of Mary’s Center friends, donors and supporters like you to reach their $4M goal.

We need you and others to go the extra mile with Mary’s Center by contributing to the Building Better Futures Together Campaign. We are reaching out to individuals, corporations and foundations to help raise $4 million by February 2013.

To learn more about naming opportunities associated with this campaign and to contribute, please contact Chief Development Officer Rebecca Diamond at 202-420-7071 or [email protected].

Our future site in Prince George’s County will be Mary’s Center’s fourth location in the DC Metropolitan area.

In 2011, Mary’s Center opened its largest site of all (26,000 square feet) at 3912 Georgia Avenue, NW in Ward 4. Also in 2011 Mary’s Center renovated its headquarters in Adams Morgan with dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Our patient flow increased from 19,400 in 2010 to 24,000 in 2011. Today, Mary’s Center employs 275 professional and dedicated staff members to serve our community.

President/CEO Maria Gomez thanks campaign supporters at Noche Tropical. She is accompanied by Co-Chair of the Building Better Futures Together Campaign Derek Harps (Vice President of M&T Bank) and Mary’s Center board members and staff.

Brand New Senior Wellness Center

The DC Office on Aging selected Mary’s Center to manage its brand new Senior Wellness Center located at 3531 Georgia Avenue NW, just a couple of blocks from our site on Georgia Avenue. The Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center provides free services to the elderly population in Washington, DC, who are 60+. It has a state-of-the-art gym and group exercise studio, teaching kitchen, reading room, computer lab, and rooftop patio.

The fitness program includes daily studio classes, including yoga, tai chi, zumba, circuit training, and aerobics in addition to one-on-one

fitness counseling and support groups. One-on-one nutrition counseling is also available in addition to themed group trainings and cooking demonstrations. Other activities available at the Center include card and board game sessions, Bible studies, quilting groups, and outings to the theater, farmers market, and more. Mary’s Center’s goal is to link this population, which often lacks access to health care, with our programs so it can benefit from our wide range of services.

On Halloween, just one month after Mary’s Center started managing the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center, the seniors held a bake sale at our Georgia site. Our seniors felt right at home! We were privileged to give them a tour to meet the Mary’s Center staff and to begin to engage them in the medical, dental, and health education services at Mary’s Center.

Distinguished Caregiver Award Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark Fracasso was recently honored by the DC Primary Care Association (DCPCA) with the Distinguished Caregiver Award for his dedication to providing high quality health care to underserved residents of the District.

Dr. Fracasso has directed Mary’s Center’s medical program since 2008 with excellent outcomes. He has increased patient productivity nearly 60% while maintaining satisfaction and patient quality measures above 90%. Dr. Fracasso has also negotiated 100% Indigent Care “zero fee pricing” for patients below the national poverty level with a major laboratory provider, has facilitated the use of electronic medical records and has implemented electronic clinical scheduling and provider credentialing systems.

Maria Gomez, our Champion! President/CEO Maria Gomez received two very special awards in October. The Inaugural Diane Bernstein Children’s Champion Award was presented to Maria by DC Action for Children on October 20th at their “Our Founding Mothers” luncheon benefit in recognition of Mary’s Center’s excellence in the integration of early childhood programs within their community health model.

On October 29th the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP), honored Maria its 20th anniversary gala with their Health Champion Award.
